25.01.2022 Part of my job as a personal stylist is to be able to look at what my client's wearing and suggest alternative ways of putting it together. Tweaks can result in outfits becoming more feminine, more flattering, more slimming, more modern, more professional, more lengthening, edgier, curvier, etc. (Whatever it is thats important to you) It could involve tucking in, rolling a sleeve, doing up a button, changing a shoe, adding a belt, adding a shoulder pad, or even carrying yo...ur bag differently. If you swipe across you'll see that I'm wearing the same three pieces in both photos - but differently. Not only is it not as flattering on me worn this second way, but it also doesn't feel like me. . Its not just what you wear, its how you wear it.

24.01.2022 I had a client ask me the other day for some tips for online shopping. As most of us are in the same boat and having to do at least some shopping that way at the moment, I thought I'd share two of the tips I sent her. (Based on buying clothes) I always look at the model wearing the piece and see how it fits her and then compare her measurements to mine. If she's 5'11 and I'm 5'3, (alternatively if she's small busted and I'm big busted....., etc) I have to have a good think ab...out how it's going to work on me. I also think about the angle shes standing on, how that may affect the look and whether shes using her arms in a particular way to disguise something. (Eg putting her arm across her body to make a dress look like it has more shape through the waist than it does) I compare my measurements to those of the garment - every time. I never assume I'm a certain size. If I was unsure, I would contact the store (email or chat) and ask for their advice. For example, I bought this jacket from the States. Before buying it, I... Took my measurements, compared them to those online, and had a think about which size would be best for me - considering how I wanted it to fit. *I looked at how it fit the model in all the photos and took particular notice of her height and body shape. When I was still a bit unsure about the size, I emailed the store and asked for their advice - which turned out great. I didn't realise the blazer also came in a Petite size - which would work much better, and by emailing them, they offered me free return shipping (which may have been hefty) if it wasn't right and needed to be sent back. Fortunately it fit perfectly and didn't need any alterations - that doesnt always happen - even for me. However, I always try and do what I can to try and prevent being disappointed when it arrives. Hope that helps!
24.01.2022 Following on from my post earlier today... these are a few ways you can highlight the waist to visually lengthen the legs. (Should you wish to) Wear a belt (as I did in my previous post) Tuck in... Wear high-waisted pants and jeans Twist, gather and ruche to accentuate the middle Wear sleeves that finish at the elbow Push your sleeves up to the elbow Wear something short over something long
24.01.2022 When we talk about personal style in fashion terms, we refer to the way someone expresses themself through aesthetic choices such as their clothes, accessories, hairstyle, and the way they put outfits together. But your personal style also carries through to the other areas of your life - how you decorate your home, the fragrances that appeal to you, the kind of holidays you like to take, the books you read, the flowers you like, art and architecture that interests you, t...he restaurants you go to, .....and the music you love. If you're trying to figure out your fashion personal style, and not sure where to start, think about your taste in all the above. What are you attracted to? It might give you some hints. Think about it this way, if your wardrobe is bright, colorful, playful, busy, patterned, but your home is ultra sleek, minimal, modern black and white and you only ever buy white flowers....I'd be questioning which is really your taste. #personalstyle #style #authenticstyle #personalstylist #personalshopper #personalshopping #wardrobestylist #wardrobeoverhaul #melbournestyle #personalstylistmelbourne

23.01.2022 Has anyone done any Boxing Day sale shopping? I’ve bought one thing so far - this linen shirt - and I found it in the men’s section. It was on my list to look for (old one needed replacing) but when I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted in the women’s section, I checked out the men’s. I’ll often do that, if I’m just buying something basic, to see if they have different color options, necklines that are more flattering, sleeves that work better, etc.. . If you swipe acros...s you’ll see the windcheater I got too (in navy - also on my list) Both from Uniqlo. ...and remember if you are hitting the sales, a bargain is only a bargain if it gets worn, it’s a waste of money if it just hangs in your wardrobe. Think about what you need (what’s missing) and make a list. Shop smart! . #personalstylist #personalshopper #wardrobestylist #wardrobemakeover #mystyle #classicstyle #levis #melbournestyle #howtobeagoodwife
23.01.2022 Although I already had a fairly small wardrobe, while I've been in lockdown the past couple of months, I've spent time editing it down even further. I gave two bags of clothes to my nieces of things that don't fit me properly, pieces I no longer need for my lifestyle and stuff that doesn't feel like it represents my style anymore. You'd think with less in the wardrobe it would mean you wouldn't have a lot of outfit options, but I find that if you have the right keys pieces a...nd plenty of accessories (particularly shoes) then you can come up with lots of different looks. For example, here I'm wearing a combo I've never worn before, even though I've had the blazer for about 5 years, skirt for 6 and belt for 8 or so. (The boots are newish) The other advantage of having less is being able to see exactly what you have to work with - so it makes it easier to get dressed.

21.01.2022 One way to make a masculine piece (in this case a military shirt) look and feel more feminine, is to layer on delicate jewellery. #styletip @vogueparis . Before you make a quick decision on a piece, (hands up whose guilty of trying things on and whipping them off before theyve even done the zip up and looked at it properly) play around with it and try styling it in different ways. 18.01.2022 Often when people hear the word "Petite" mentioned in regards to clothes, they think tiny, but in fact in the fashion industry, petite has nothing to do with size, it's all about height. You could be a size 6 or a size 16 - if you're 5'3ish or under, you're considered Petite. If you're a Petite there are several things you might want to consider when dressing (and shopping)...here's a few... Know which are the best shapes and styles for you - including necklines, hem lengt...hs, shoe shapes, jeans styles. (For example, I know that hip-length jackets, like the one Im wearing here, are a good style for me) Understand how clothes should fit you. (So you know when a piece just doesn't work for a Petite. It's not just about the length of a skirt or pants) Recognise what can and can't be altered to fit properly Find shops/brands that work well for Petites Know what to look for when online shopping Find a good tailor

17.01.2022 My Nan knitted this jumper for me when I was about 19. It lives to see another winter. . Whenever Im doing a Wardrobe Overhaul and we come across a sentimental piece (ie something someone special gave them or perhaps something they wore on a first date or honeymoon, etc.) thats loved but unlike my jumper, no longer worn, I encourage my client to keep it in a box or a tub, away from the everyday clothes. If theyre ready to let go of it, then perhaps take a photo. But dont keep them in the wardrobe taking up space.
16.01.2022 This is Anna Wintour (70), editor-in-chief of US Vogue I'd describe her personal style as being consistent, feminine, whimsical, powerful, modern, yet not trendy/fashion-y She wears printed midi or knee length dresses, nipped in at the waist, often with a long coat (it's a very rare spotting of her wearing pants - below)... Always a nude custom made Manolo Blahnik sandal... or knee high boots She also always wears her crystal necklaces whether its to a ball, to work or to the tennis. She's probably best known and recognised for her signature oversized sunglasses and her sharp bob (which you can see she's had since, at least the 70's.
16.01.2022 COATS - Whether youve recently bought one online or youre doing a wardrobe edit (without me ) and youre wondering how to know whether it fits properly or not, heres a few tips for what to look for... (Based on a classic fit, not so much the oversized trend) The collar should lie flat against the back of the neck and the lapels should sit flat against the body. If the lapels gape open, the coat is either too small through the back and chest or too long through the torso.... Sleeves should sit approx. at the wrist bone. (Theoretically just cover the wrist bones - but I think shorter is fine - you just dont want them too long) Pockets at the hips should not pull or gape You should be able to raise your hands over your head without the coat pulling through your back There should be no pulling through the body anywhere. Problem areas usually include upper back, across the tummy, hips and bum and around the arms, across the bust and near where the underarm starts. *Make sure you move around in it, sit, walk, etc, rather than just stand still to see how it moves and whether it creases. Also, get a rear view look at yourself. The front closures should sit evenly without pulling and the vent at the back should lie flat - again, no pulling. Look over the coat, particularly at the hem to ensure the lining is not pulling on the coats fabric. Have a good look around the hem, while you have the coat on, to make sure its straight. (ie no dipping) Length will depend on your height and where you like to wear it. Remember that coats can also be altered. I bought this one about 12 or so years ago, (online from the US) - when it arrived it was a size too big for me. Rather than send it back I took it to my tailor and had it altered to fit properly. (Including having the strap at the back tightened to give it more shape through the waist.) *Swipe across
15.01.2022 This is Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Paris, Emmanuelle Alt. I'd describe her style as clean, simple, masculine/feminine, elegant, cool, rock chick... She often wears...... jeans - white, black and blue leopard print leather black shirts t-shirts great blazers, jackets and coats simple chic jewellery *Never skirts or dresses "I have always been quite boyish. I used to wear some skirts in the past but I was always looking for some simplicity." "The difference between the British and the French is that the British try to be cool and the French try to be sexy... but the French try to be sexy with a white t-shirt and jeans." "My jeans are Topshop - I love Topshop. They have the best jeans" "I can tell you for sure I will never do anything to my face. Nothing. The age I am? That is it. Who do you want to convince you're 10 yrs younger? Who do you care about? The people who know you, they know your age - so deal with it". 13.01.2022 Nice outfit...
12.01.2022 This time of year, I often get requests for advice about layering. (How you layer depends on your style & how you like to dress) Recently I was at a client's home to put together some autumn/winter outfits and takes some photos that she would just keep on her phone and refer to when she was planning what to wear. When I asked her if there was anything she wanted particular help with, she said yes! - layering shirts under knits. She'd tried it but every time she did it didn't ...look or feel right. It felt bulky, sometimes the shirt wriggled up... and it always looked messy. I asked her to pop on an example to show me, so I could I try and work out why it wasn't working.....and as soon as she did I could see straight away. Firstly, the fabric of the knit was too fine/light for the fabric of the shirt. You could see all the lumps of the shirt underneath. The knit needed to be heavier. Secondly, the shirt was too big to wear under a somewhat fitted knit. It was an oversized/boyfriend style. (Which was why it was feeling bulky and wriggly up under the knit) *It could still be long it just needed to be closer to the body. My tip for layering a shirt under a sweater (particularly if you're finding the one you have is causing bulk) is to look for something fitted. The one I'm wearing here is an old Gap fitted style. I also have a Ralph Lauren fitted shirt I wear under sweaters, but to be honest if you just like the look then you don't need to spend a lot of money on the shirt. (As long as the collar & cuffs are not outdated or tired) Try something from Uniqlo (the mens section do a fitted Oxford that might be worth trying....or Target) Or these days you can even find mock collars. Cos often do them. 11.01.2022 When T contacted me she said she had lots in her wardrobe to choose from, but was inclined to wear the same thing; when she shopped, she often bought things that were never quite right and she wanted to stop wasting money on clothes that she never wore. 11.01.2022 If there’s one thing you should invest in for your wardrobe - it’s a good tailor. . Making even a slight alteration to a garment can make a huge difference to how it looks on you. A hem that’s too long can make an outfit look dowdy, a waistband not sitting in the right place can make your legs look shorter than they are...etc, etc. .... A tailor can also reinvent old favourites. I bought this jacket in Paris, loved it but rarely wore it - at the length it was. (Swipe across ) Now that I’ve chopped it (well @josezarpanexclusivetailor did) I wear it all the time. . 10.01.2022 Just before lockdown 2.0 I was in a store and a lady came over to me and asked for my advice. She said she'd overheard me talking to someone (my client) about how something looked on her and was wondering if I could help her. She had two knits in her hands - one blue and one purple. She didn't know which way to go. She loved the purple. It was her favourite color but she thought the blue might be a better shade for her. I took the sweaters off her, took her over to the m...irror and held them up, independently, to her face. Neither of them made her look dead. (Some colors can do that) Then I asked her which one would make her feel the happiest and most confident if she was wearing it, and she said without doubt, the purple. And there was her answer. I told her to get the purple, asked her if she ever wore lippy and suggested a color that might work well with the purple (and to also use a touch of it on her cheeks) to give her a little bit more color in her face when she wore it. If there's a color you love, that makes you feel good - wear it. If it doesn't particularly flatter your complexion, try and find a way to make it work. It might be adjusting your makeup, wearing some jewelry, adding another piece of clothing (ie a different colored collar under the sweater) or doing what I'm doing here and wearing it on another part of the body (ie not near my face). Pale pink is not really my best color and I rarely wear it, but I can get away with it if I have a bit of a tan. Our goal should be to wear things that make us feel great, not just wear things that are technically correct. . #personalstylist #personalstylistmelbourne #personalshopper #personalshopping #wardrobestylist #wardrobemakeover #wardrobeupdate #wardrobeedit #outfitplanning #petitestyle #over50style #springfashion #classicstyle

10.01.2022 Has anyone worn heels after weeks of being in lockdown? Howd you go? 08.01.2022 Hope you had a great weekend. I went into the city Saturday night for dinner - the first time since lockdown. I caught the train in, and I was the only person on the platform and then there was me and one other person walking through Parliament Station. The streets were eerily quiet, like it was 3am when it was only 7.30pm, and the restaurants, though many we tried, fully booked, were not busy at all. (Or closed) It was not the city I was used to; it was hard to believe it... was a Saturday night. It was quite sad really. I might have to put up with my cooking for a while longer. Has anyone else been into the city for dinner? If so, how'd you find it? On a side note... should you wish to visually lengthen your legs, try highlighting where your waist is. You can see I've done it here by wearing a belt around my waist, but there's plenty of other ways you can do it if belts don't suit you or they're not your thing. I'll share a few in my next post...or you check them out i my Instagram Stories here https://bit.ly/2YJ0mAS

08.01.2022 It feels a bit odd talking about fashion and shopping at the moment when the world is in the shape it's in. But as I've mentioned to a few of my clients I've been working with, I think we could all do with a side distraction and positively think about the future - how we might like to emerge when this dreadful virus is behind us. You might not be shopping, but perhaps from my posts you may get some ideas for your style, what to add or remove from your wardrobe, how to wear wh...at you already have in new ways, how to spruce things up a bit and get them ready for spring, .....and ultimately feel good about yourself in these not so good times. (Says she who's typing this in the same pair of tracky daks she's had on for 3 days, and may have even slept in one chilly night ) One of the little projects I did recently was renovated all my black suede shoes with some spray and a brush. It was on my list to do last winter and I never got around to it - now Ive got the time. (Swipe across to see what I used. I got the spray from a local shoe repairer. I'm sure you could pick up some online) I may need to learn how to walk in them again by the time I get to wear them... Out of interest has anyone been doing any online shopping? (Or are you waiting til lockdown is over?) I bought a pair of sneakers last week, but unfortunately they need to be returned because they're N.Q.R. . #lockdown #isoproject #melbourne

07.01.2022 American Interior designer and fashion icon, Iris Apfel, turned 99 last weekend. I'd describe her style as being eccentric, colorful, fun, flamboyant, creative, ..... 06.01.2022 My client messaged me through the week and said she liked my boots and is thinking about getting a white pair for herself but she's worried about how she's going to keep them clean. I thought I'd share what I told her... "It's probably inevitable I'll get a few marks on them eventually, though I've done pretty well so far. The only small scuff I've had is from driving in them - and that was only a quick around the corner trip - so I won't be doing that again. I sprayed... them with a water-proofer (swipe across) before I wore them. (I'll do it again soon) And to remove the mark I got from driving in them, I used a Magic Eraser (which I also use to clean white sneakers). Ill probably give them a spruce up when they need it with some shoe/leather polish or even Mr Sheen? If youve got white boots/shoes how do you keep yours clean? *You can check out similar tips to this in my Instagram highlights under "Style Tips" here https://bit.ly/38mVGUi
05.01.2022 Apart from the obvious, not being able to see family and friends and work being affected, I haven't minded being in lockdown (in fact there have been some things I've really enjoyed about it) - but yesterday I had a bit of a wobbly day (which I'm sure most of us have had or will have at some stage). I think three weeks in isolation with a further four to go got to me and I was just feeling sorry for myself (for no real reason) So today when I got up I did a few things to sh...ake things up...I exercised outside first thing in the morning, I had a shower also in the morning (i.e. before 3 pm ) I put on real clothes (some of my winter favourites that Im not having much of a chance to wear, not just my trackies and ugg boots) and I left the apartment to go to the local shops for a few essentials. #woohoo And when I got home to do some work, I played some disco (rather than depressing news) Oh...I also bought myself a couple of little treats online (some underwear, a book & some sneakers) And, I feel so much better today. Keep in mind that clothes (& make up for me too) can make you feel better. So, if you're also feeling a bit flat, try putting on some of your favourites and see if it gives you a boost. Wearing sloppy clothes day in day out, may be comfy but might not be making you feel great. Hope you're all doing ok
04.01.2022 Wearing some pattern and prints - particularly florals - can sometimes look outdated and be aging. (Note: This also applies to wearing scarves) . This coat however, is youthful and modern. The way shes wearing it - her accessories and the casual pieces shes teamed it with, also give it an overall cool sophisticated look. ... If you swipe across youll see an example of an aging print. Of course the daggy cardie doesnt help much. If youre unsure whether the patterns and prints you have in your wardrobe are aging - or not, and you dont want to wear clothes that may be aging you, consider booking in for a Wardrobe Overhaul. 03.01.2022 One way to reinvent old pieces you have in your wardrobe is to team them with something new season. It could be a blazer you've had for years that can be modernised by wearing with a current style of jeans. An old leather skirt might be revived with a new shape shirt or knit.... Here I'm wearing a trench coat that must be nearly 10 years old with my fairly new white knee-high boots. *If I wore the trench today with the same boots and jeans, I was wearing 10 years ago (which might have been square toe and low rise skinny), the look would most likely be daggy and outdated. Dig deep into your wardrobe and see what you can find. Is there anything in there that could be brought back to life by adding something new? The question is then, what could that new piece be? (Remember it doesnt need to be anything trendy, it could be a classic piece - it just needs to be something current and modern.) Want a hand looking at some of your old pieces and thinking about how they could be updated or reinvented, details of my styling sessions can be found here https://bit.ly/38fndXW
03.01.2022 Something I hear quite a bit when I'm working with clients is - "I'd love to be able to wear ........, but I don't know how to". It could be ankle boots, it could be pleated skirts, it might be high rise jeans, often, it's shirts. Sometimes they'll say, they saw me wearing a shirt on Instagram or Facebook and they'd like to try it, but they don't know where to start. Occasionally they'll have one in their wardrobe, but they don't know what to do with it. ... As with everything, first you have to find a style and fit, maybe a fabric, that works for you. *Take notice of things like pockets on the bust and the length - if you intend to wear it out. Next, theres so many different ways to wear a shirt, play around and experiment with it til you find one (a couple) that feels like you and your personal style. It might look like I just throw my shirts on and off I go but I do put a bit of thought into how I wear (style) them. Firstly, I'm ruthless about letting go of anything that starts to look dated, tired or no longer fits properly. . When I buy a new one I consider what style and fit I want. With this one I'm wearing here, I wanted something slightly oversized, so I bought one size bigger than I normally would. . Sometimes I only tuck in the front and sometimes the whole thing. (Often it depends on what I'm wearing on the bottom) I might haphazardly push up the sleeves or roll them a particular way. Occasionally I'll pop the collar up. I always iron the shirt, but then I like to rough it up a bit so that it doesn't look too pressed - particularly the collar. (Like I'm off to work in an office) Sometimes I like to create a deep V neckline, other times I don't bother. I wear different underwear underneath according to wear I'm going and what I'm doing. . In my next post I'll stick up a few photos to give you some ideas for how you could wear a shirt...should you wish to.

01.01.2022 When you're thinking about what bottoms to have in your casual wardrobe for this time of year, apart from your jeans, you could also have pants that are an alternative to jeans. (ie. Not the pants you go to work in, sleep in or exercise in) Chinos are one option. I've got about 5 pairs in different colors and I've been wearing them loads while I've been working at home during lockdown. Personally, apart from them being super comfy, I like them because they work for my class...ic, preppy, feminine (occasionally with a dash of masculine) style. If I'm at home I generally wear them with my sneakers or slides and a t-shirt, knit or a shirt (depending on the season), but sometimes if I'm going out (maybe next year?) I'll dress them up by adding a heel and a blazer (as you can see here and again if you swipe across ) The ones I'm wearing in this photo are a classic style by Gap, but there are also more fashionable versions of a chino out there. In fact, on my hit list for summer is a white relaxed pair, maybe with pleats and perhaps with a wider leg. Keep in mind a pair of pants like this is really just a basic item to have in your wardrobe. (Like a t-shirt or simple black pants) You could wear chinos with a bright patterned lurex knit, your leopard print shoes or a soft pretty blouse - it's up to you to put your own spin on it. Just wear them like you'd wear your jeans. For some people, initially, chinos can be a bit challenging to wear. They're generally not as fitted as a pair of jeans or as smart as a pair of trousers...and often the shoe is where people can get stuck....so I'm putting up lots of photos over on my Instagram Stories (here https://bit.ly/35hjtpk) to give you some ideas. TIP: I buy my chinos in different sizes. Sometimes I like to wear them a tighter/firmer fit and other times I prefer a looser, more relaxed fit. Just like with jeans... .
01.01.2022 This is me just before I headed off to do my first Wardrobe Overhaul in 3 months yesterday. Heels on, lippy on... excited to start (physically) reconnecting with my clients again. And if you slide across you can see how I looked when I got home. I think it might take a little while to adjust to some aspects of life after lockdown. Hows everyone else doing? ... 01.01.2022 Nothing to wear.. Being strict with how and when your clothes are worn could be limiting your outfit options. For example, recently a client emailed me and asked me if I could visit her because she was sick of staring at her (full) wardrobe and feeling like she had nothing to wear. She suggested I come over and have a look through her clothes and tell her what she needed to buy. So, I did. After we'd chatted and made sure we were both clear on the look she wanted to achiev...e and what she needed outfits for, we got stuck into the wardrobe. I started by pulling out a few pieces and getting her to try them on. A beige trench, a striped tee, a pair of blue jeans, a kitten heel, and a little cross body bag. She looked at me a bit confused and said, "But that's my work coat. I wouldn't wear that with my jeans". But then, when she put it on, it looked great, and she loved it and asked me to take a photo. (We took lots of outfit pics for her to file and save) After a few hours together my client realised she didn't need anything new (just a couple of gap fillers) - she just needed to be creative and use what she had. Another client had a beautiful lurex knit she'd never worn, that we teamed with a pair of cargo/joggers and white sneakers, so she could wear it casually during the day, rather than wait for an evening occasion. And another had a beautiful hardly worn dress that was being saved for weddings, etc, that I put with her knee-high boots so she could wear out for drinks with her girlfriends or on dates. And each year there's at least one client I'll give some gentle encouragement to to try their white jeans in (late) autumn and winter. What do you think, white jeans in winter or ?
