22.01.2022 Minister for Senior Australians and Aged Care Services Senator the Hon Richard Colbeck visited Meals on Wheels Devonport recently, where he spoke to volunteers about the importance and significant impact Meals on Wheels services has on the health, wellbeing and independence of older Australians. We thank Minister Colbeck for his support of our essential service and look forward to a favourable outcome of the review into CHSP funded meal services. Meals On Wheels Tasmania #morethanjustameal

18.01.2022 This week is National Food Safety Week. Meals on Wheels services across the country are committed to upholding strict food safety procedures and operations, to ensure the health and wellbeing of older Australians. As we get older, we experience lowered immunity, which makes us more at-risk to foodborne illness. Check out the below resource from the Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) to ensure you maintain food safety at home.

14.01.2022 Today we thank our volunteer leadership teams across the country, as they ensure the smooth running of our Meals on Wheels services and play a vital role in fostering well-nourished and socially connected communities. Without your contribution, our 76,000 strong volunteer workforce would not exist and we wouldn't be able to do what we do. So, thank you! #IVMDay20 #meaningfulvolunteering #morethanjustameal

12.01.2022 Well done to Camden Meals on Wheels for being awarded a 2020 NSW Innovation Award for their Book Bus service. The Book Bus is a great example of the other social support and community connection services Meals on Wheels offers across the country. After all, we really are #morethanjustameal.... This is also the third time since 2013 that Camden Meals on Wheels has been recognised with this award. We provide a meal and so much more, and the Book Bus has been a great initiative that has allowed Camden Meals on Wheels to continue to adapt services to meet community needs, manager Gary de Jong said. https://southwestvoice.com.au/camden-meals-on-wheels/ Meals on Wheels NSW

07.01.2022 New research has shown loneliness is in fact, a serious public health problem. "There is robust evidence that social isolation and loneliness significantly increase the risk for premature mortality, and the magnitude of the risk exceeds that of many leading health indicators,’ Julianne Holt-Lunstad, Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at Brigham Young University in Utah, USA explains. Holt-Lunstad found that social isolation, loneliness or living alone posed risks for p...remature death that were as big as or bigger than obesity, smoking (less than 15 cigarettes a day) and air pollution. Meals on Wheels plays a significant and essential role in preventing social isolation and combating loneliness, every day. Many customers look forward to the visit and friendly chat by a Meals on Wheels volunteer, more than the meal itself. It is one of the valuable ways our services provide early, frontline prevention in the comfort of your home.

Well done to everyone at the Mackay service! ... This is a great example of the level of food safety our services continue to strive for and deliver on! #morethanjustameal Meals on Wheels Queensland

05.01.2022 We had the most incredible, overwhelming response." Our Executive Director, Kate Thiele told The Guardian reporter, James Shackell how younger volunteers stepped up to the plate, to enable Meals on Wheels to continue delivering its life-changing services during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Here, James also explains how rolling up his sleeves to volunteer for Meals on Wheels was the most satisfying thing he has done in years. ... 05.01.2022 As we get older, our bodies require different nutrients to promote optimum functioning and good health. Our meals adhere to National Meal Guidelines, which ensures our customers receive their recommended and daily requirement of vitamins, minerals, protein and fibre. Pair this with a social and wellbeing check performed by friendly volunteers at every delivery, and it's easy to see how our essential service helps older Australians live well in their homes, like no other.... Food is a critical part of life and at Meals on Wheels, we believe there is no compromise for delicious, nutrient-rich food tailored to suit your needs. After all, we are #morethanjustameal!

05.01.2022 Meals on Wheels volunteers across the country make a difference to the lives of vulnerable older Australians, every day. In fact, many Meals on Wheels customers say they find the smiley face and friendly conversation they have with our volunteers at each delivery, more important than the meal itself. If you have some spare time to commit to volunteering for Meals on Wheels, get in touch with your local service today!

05.01.2022 Older people are especially vulnerable to social isolation. Research reveals that prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, one in five older Australians were socially isolated and this was the major cause of loneliness and social exclusion amongst the elderly. At this time of increased social isolation, Meals on Wheels services continued to provide essential early intervention and health prevention to ensure older Australians could live safely and well in their homes, while remaining... engaged with their communities. Yes, we deliver meals to our valued customers, but we offer much more than that.

05.01.2022 Human connection has never been more important and we recognise this especially on Social Inclusion Week (21-29 November). Every day, Meals on Wheels services across the country provide front-line, early intervention, preventing social isolation in the 1 in 4 people who live alone. Often when we get older our social connections reduce and at Meals on Wheels we know how important it is to stay connected to those around you. ... Through volunteering opportunities, we also enable Australians to continue remaining connected and engaged with their communities. Our crucial role in promoting social inclusion is just another way we are #morethanjustameal

05.01.2022 Meals on Wheels provides early frontline intervention and health prevention. Our model of care focuses on forming relationships with our valued customers, delivering nourishing meals, reducing social isolation and providing older Australians with the confidence and support to remain at home. Meals on Wheels ensures vulnerable Australians stay connected to their community, is an opportunity to build friendships and takes the pressure off loved ones and carers who might be j...uggling work, family commitments, or just feeling carer fatigue, Maria Berry, Consumer Representative Advocate at Older Persons Advocacy Network says. It can empower older people because they're not having to rely on their family or carers, and it gives them choice and power. In rural and remote Australia, I've seen Meals on Wheels become part of the bigger picture in tackling social isolation and loneliness. For example, in 2018 when Meals on Wheels volunteers in Holbrook brought recipients to Albury to eat together and watch free Christmas concerts put on by NSW Seniors.

03.01.2022 With the impact of the pandemic, the care and wellbeing of senior Australians has been a priority this year, and meals services and food security have become e...ven more important, says Minister for Aged Care and Senior Australians, Senator Richard Colbeck. We're so grateful to be one of many organisations providing fresh, nutritious meals to the community through the Meals on Wheels Australia program.

02.01.2022 Last week our President, Sharyn Broer was interviewed by Aged Care Weekly about the need for Government funding to improve volunteering within the aged care sector. This followed recommendations made by the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety. Volunteers are the frontline workers in organisations like Meals on Wheels. They’re the people who are going to the homes of some of our most vulnerable community members. And so they have a critical role in the quality... and safety of the services that we’re delivering," she says. It’s absolutely critical that for these recommendations to succeed, that there’s an appropriate level of increased funding to go with that.
