25.01.2022 Yesterday I was joined online with the NGV 2020 Teen Council to explore making egg tempera paints using pigments found around the home. A great session, and I loved seeing the student’s creative results with matcha tea, Quik, Milo and even ground-up blue cold & flu tablets! Applications for the 2021 NGV Teen Council close on November 22, so if you know any creative 14+ teens with a passion for the arts & creative industry, take a look online at ngv.vic.gov.au. 21.01.2022 I’m excited to be working on two NGV virtual Studio Challenges for high ability students attending Victorian Government Schools in September and October! Students will uncover the themes, aesthetics and ideas in textile designs in Japanese modernist kimono, and the symbolic qualities of the native flora and fauna that inspire my textile design work. I’ve been learning about creating paints using found materials and resources, wearing out an old mortar & pestle in the process.... I’m looking forward to seeing the resulting patterns created by the students. Fingers crossed my internet connection will cope! The NGV Creative Catalyst programs form part of the Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series, an initiative of the Department of Education and training. 19.01.2022 Now that Melbourne’s Covid restrictions have slightly eased, I’m able to place an order of 100% linen tea towel designs from my new Melbourne based manufacturer, just in time for Christmas! 17.01.2022 That was a whole lot of fun! Today I presented the first of 2 NGV Studio Challenges with high ability students from Year 3-6. We had a look at textile printing processes, and then had a go at drawing a few leaves and flowers collected from the garden to turn into a repeat. The fun part was making paints from an egg yolk, water and whatever pigments (aka spices, instant coffee or ground rocks) were on hand. Perfect for lockdown Victorians on a cold blustery day. I love the results, so am definitely going to try out this process on my own design work.
