25.01.2022 Hospitality 2.0 (21 predictions for the other side) Stevan Premutico: Over the past few weeks, I have been chatting with a bunch of industry thought leaders (whilst we are all bunkered down) to start to explore what our great industry may look like on the other side. There have been some great insights, so I thought I would share these in the hope of shining a ray of hope, during a very difficult time. ... As impossible as it may seem at this time, the government support has hopefully given us the opportunity to peer through the fog of uncertainty & start to think how best to set ourselves up for once the crisis has passed and the doors open again (because they will!) Its fair to say that the industry was already on its knees its a broken biz model. If there is any positivity to come from this, perhaps the Covid-19 crisis is a rare opportunity for us collectively to rewrite the future of our great industry. 18.01.2022 It may be our industries last supper for now, but it wont be the last. #hospoheart What a crazy, fucked up, scary, unprecedented time we are living in. My hear...t goes out to this great hospo industry. As we brace for what may be our industries last supper for a while, its important to remember that it wont be our last. Hospo - you are not alone. We are all in this together. The hospo industry has taken a beating over the past few years - BUT EVERY SINGLE TIME IT HAS BOUNCED BACK. AND IT WILL AGAIN HERE. We were hit by the GFC, we bounced back. We were hit by the fires, we bounced back. We were hit by the floods, we bounced back. We were attacked by the media for award wages, we bounced back. This is an industry that doesnt know how to give in. Its resilient, its strong, its passionate, and its full of some of the most amazing people I know. Just look at what happened last week. Overnight we lost 80% of our revenue, our customers stopped walking through the door and the only phone calls were from those customers cancelling their bookings. Anyone in their right mind would close the doors and throw in the towel. But instead of giving in the industry went into overdrive and began to pivot. The industry collaborated in ways I have never seen before - ever - and came up with new products, new ideas and new ways to operate in order to survive. See, the hospo industry has a heart that is beyond reason - its the #hospoheart. The hospoheart doesnt know how to give up. It doesnt know how to close the doors and walk away. Its just not what we do. We are fighters, we are survivers, and we dont give in. My phone rang many times over the past few days - from friends, from partners, from people I have never met before. The conversations were all the same...we are fucked, BUT.... Despite everyone being in the scariest position of their lives, with their back against the wall, and a government sucking every last ounce of blood from them (with the continued restrictions) there was strength, courage and conviction deep in their voices. We will be OK. We will find our feet again. We will make it through. We dont give up. I am going to close the doors but we will be back in 90 days - only different this time. It made my heart skip a beat every time. So of you know that I left this industry a couple of years ago but then decided to come back. This weekend I realised why. There is heart, passion and belief in this industry that is unlike anything I have ever experienced. At an unprecedented time, when everyone is scared shitless, this industry fights on. That is what makes this industry so great - resilience, hope and a never ending belief. Whilst this will undoubtedly be the biggest test this industry has ever faced, one by one doors will open again, and the industry will continue to do what it does best - survive.
