20.01.2022 FARMING FRIDAY - 16 October 2020 This last fortnight we’ve had rain, floods and sunshine. A new set of weighing scales has been added to the crush and with all things new, we had to try it out, Enter k12, one of our bulls. Can you guess his weight?? The grass is growing well and cows are happy even though under foot it is deceivingly very wet still. We find joy watching our kids learn and little Elenor has learnt to open and close the gates now and is more then willing to do the job.... we just need to add an extra 5mins per gate to the task. Muddy puddles are also a real winner for her, so winter has sure been a favourite, mums washing not so much, our little Farming apprentice.

19.01.2022 EXTRA STOCK means we will be open during the week in the afternoons. Call in or contact us to pick up some great beef. Brisket, steaks, roasts, mince, etc.

19.01.2022 FARMING FRIDAY : 6 November 2020 It is said that silence is golden... but it can also be that silence says more than words can describe. These last two weeks on the farm have seen a few instances of silence speaking more than words. The rains have once again flooded our property, but to the point where crops and sialage have been severely affected. It is not often that Simon is lost for words, but this was a time where his silence was like shouting out his devastation. While ...we have plenty of grass, the ground remains water logged meaning machinery and even cows make so bigger imprints that we are having to sacrifice some paddocks that will eventually need to be reworked. The children have learnt about life and death also lately with foxes getting into their chickens and losing most of them. Thankfully we have bought some more, but are waiting for them to begin laying again in the next few weeks. On the brighter side, we have had our first two calves this week, which begins the spring / summer calving season for us. We have cows calving now right through until February. We have also expanded our opening hours to include the Friday afternoon before our Saturday opening, to give a wider opening times. As always contact us to arrange another time if these times don’t suit you. Christmas and holidays are coming up fast and to help with planning our open days before then will be: November 6&7 and 20 & 21 December 4&5 and 18th & 19th. We will be CLOSED FOR JANUARY If you would like specific meat for Christmas, or New Years it’s time to plan ahead and begin ordering.

18.01.2022 Farming Friday - 24 October 2020 There’s always something to do on the farm... This week It included cleaning up of branches blown down recently, weighing of our 18mth old stud bulls and heifer to check their growth. Lighting the bonfire which to me always symbolises a cleaning up. Checking grass growth in paddocks locked up for silage and hay. And to top it off, looking for a needle in a haystack, when little Isaac lost his shoe in one of the paddocks. After driving, walking and searching for quite some time, we headed home defeated , only to find it under Simons leg on the motorbike, still with Isaac .

18.01.2022 Farming Friday 18 November 2020 As the sun sets on another week, and Christmas lights begin to shine, we take a minute to reflect. How much our little foal Vekka is growing frolicking around the paddocks. Our puppy Skye is also growing in energy and playfulness too. She loves the chickens, at Times a little too much, and their eggs this week she has began using them as balls, much to our disapproval. So it’s back to the drawing board for more ideas on chickens, eggs and puppi...es too. The grass has dried out further this week, so we have begun feeding silage to the cows to keep up their nutrition and milk production. I took pictures of the Charolais twins that were named by you our followers this year. Regina and Rose the roast, are looking really good. As twins they are not quite as big as some of the other calves, but considering they had to be adopted by another cow, they are going really well. Lastly as we have our final sales tomorrow before Christmas, we want to wish everyone a happy and safe Christmas and thank each of you for supporting or following us this year as we have begun this journey of farm gate sales. We will take a break until the third week of January, when sales will resume on January 15 and 16. However, Our farm and life here will continue. Simon, Michelle and family.

17.01.2022 Farming Friday- 10 December 20 Exciting news, with the birth of our first foal this week. It is a purebred Arabian colt named Vekkâ ( short for a name ‘Vekkâliltl’ meaning ‘the light’). Our daughter Ashleigh is into endurance riding, which involves riding horses for 80-160km at a time. It takes her all over the state and if we’re willing to drive interstate too a few weekends each month. This is a great sport, but understandably you need fit and energetic horses, thus where... the Arab breed comes in. It’s Ashleigh’s goal to breed her own endurance horses, so this foal is her first step. It has been a steep learning curve, with a sleepless night for Ashleigh as the foal needed some assistance feeding to get going, and with the first 24hrs being the only time the mare has colostrum, she had to help it feed every hour, for that time. Thankfully by then the foal and mare got the idea and Ashleigh got to rest. With a few other little things that saw the vet coming out a few times this week for it, very quickly an understanding of how lucky you are to have healthy babies both animal and people alike and how much we take it for granted. On the farm our hay baling has finished for the season, so now we turn to doing some contract hay baling for others. Most modern day beef farms under 1000acres, need to have income from other sources to support a family. Doing some contact baling is one part of that for us. Our cows continue to calve, with a few more born this week. Weather wise it’s really drying out, the grass quality is deteriorating, which means we soon turn to feeding silage (cooked grass) each day to keep the nutrients up to the cows.

13.01.2022 FARMING FRIDAY (Saturday) 28 Nov 2020 As the sun sets on another Friday, the hay baling continues. With warm weather and forecast rains the weather plays a big part of life at this time of year. We juggle between getting at least three good days to dry out hay, and preparing new summer crops that you want planted before a good rain. This week has seen many hours preparing a paddock for a summer crop. This morning/ Saturday it is a race against time and darken clouds to get the seed in and rolled before the forecast rain this afternoon.

12.01.2022 Farming Friday- November 13th It’s the time of year when all hands are on deck and working hours become keep going until the job is done. Some paddocks were cut and baled for silage this week. To give some perspective. A paddock is cut, then teddered (spun) each day to help drying. When the grass is dry enough about 40% moisture, usually 3 days, it’s time to rake and bale the hay. Once all this is done each bale is picked up and wrapped in plastic to seal it from the weather.... Finally the bales are each picked up and moved by tractor to a pad for storage. We got 80 picked bales from this 10acres, so a few more paddocks to go. Each year we do a few hundred bales of silage and 400 bales of hay. Plus 300 square bales. As you can see lots of time goes into hay making on top of normal daily responsibilities. We had a few more calves this week, including this stud cow on Remembrance Day. The little bull will be named ‘Respect’. See more

08.01.2022 Farming Friday 20 November 2020 It’s been a whirlwind of a week, with such great weather forecast, more paddocks were cut and baled for hay. This makes for a week of very busy times added to a normal full Family schedule. Once the hay is ready, it’s on no matter what time of day. Wednesday afternoon was when this lot had dried enough. So instead of winding down at 3pm, tractors and machinery started and off they went. Once dark came, the air was too moist so baling stopped un...til Thursday, where the rest was finished. Then each bale is picked up and has to be stacked away. A great job for our rookie Lachie!!! He’s such a valuable young man / son on the farm. I love baling time for some of the family rituals we have introduced, like dinner in the paddock amongst the bales. The kids love jumping the win rows of raked hay and also trying to climb the nearly 6ft bales. It’s a small break for everyone to enjoy, before getting back to it. This week is also our meat sales week, with orders to fill and gates to be open also. We really enjoy getting to know our customers and love the community it creates. See more

02.01.2022 ROAST SILVERSIDE slow cooked with plum sauce, spring vegetable soup mix and a bottle of beer.... Mmm the aroma was sweet and yet the beer still obvious.
