05.01.2022 With so much flux in the industry - who can do what, when, which procedures are safe, what PPE is required - it's easy to throw one's hands up and say, hey, let's leave it to the industry bodies and just let them tell us what to do. As practitioners, however, in the event of medical mishap, we are ultimately judged by our own actions and decisions. We take the responsibility for the call. This call should be informed by what we have independently read, reflected, discussed w...ith our peers and put into practice. So, whilst there's no need for you to stand on a soap box, or convince others of your opinion (irony), there is a strong scientific, professional, moral and ethical need for you to operate clearly from a philosophy that you would feel comfortable defending. I'm thinking back to the Cat3 cases that suddenly flooded the theatres in the shadow of the shutdown. The defence of "but the network told me so" or "but this is according to so and so's guidelines" is cold comfort if those guidelines don't stack up scientifically, or worse, they lead to patient and/or staff harm. Sure, colour within the lines. But it's critical you still form your own opinion, find your compass and operate from that base #medibusiness #healthcare #healthcarebusiness #pandemic #covid
