25.01.2022 Something a little different today herb nerds. How quickly can you guess what I am? Im not a herbaceous plant or perennial shrub: swimming in the shallow sea is what I love! I am an algal species who populates the rocky seashores of the Baltic Sea and the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean.[1] Before physicians knew about my nutritional components I was used as a food, particularly in Asian cultures, and as a medicine for the treatment of goiter.[2] My common name is thought to be due to little air-filled bladders that keep me upright and close to the ocean surface.[2] I am high in a variety of minerals and halides including iodine which has led me to become one of the go-to treatments for supporting healthy thyroid function.[2]

Season with salt and pepper and dill. Enjoy!

25.01.2022 School can be demanding and many children find it difficult to concentrate and focus for the whole day. Herbal medicines could be a gentle and effective aid. Bacopa monniera (bacopa) has been used in Ayurvedic medicine as a cognition enhancer for thousands of years. Scientific studies have found that bacopa can improve concentration, focus, memory and behaviour in school aged children, with no major side effects [1]. If you feel your child could benefit from bacopa, speak to a qualified healthcare practitioner. You can find one at https://mediherb.com.au/find-a-practitioner.aspx Kean JD, Downey LA, Stough C. 24.01.2022 A: Known in the old herbals as Herba rutae caprariae1 did you guess who I am? I am not a lamb, I am Goats rue A member of the Fabaceae (legume) family, I am a profuse-flowering, hardy, perennial herb[1] that can be found in rural pastures and paddocks, perhaps offering a clue into my common name. I am native to the Middle East and indigenous to Southern Europe and Western Asia.[2] My aerial parts contain flavonoids, saponins and traces of chromium[3] which gives credit... to one of my traditional applications in supporting blood glucose levels in diabetes and insulin resistance. I am also commonly thought of for cases of insufficient lactation, having been used for centuries in both humans and ruminant species.[1] I have a mucilaginous, bitter, astringent taste and emit a disagreeable odour when bruised, which again may pertain to my common name.[1,2] See more

24.01.2022 I am your gentle herbal hug, Codonopsis pilosula. I am a perennial plant with bell shaped flowers and my root has been used in folk medicine for hundreds of years.[1] These days Im used by Herbalists to support management of anaemia, poor appetite, shortness of breath, anorexia, debility, fatigue and convalescence.[2] I have also been shown to increase red blood cell count and haemoglobin in vivo.[2] In Traditional Chinese Medicine I am called Dang shen and regarded as a tonifying herb with an affinity for lung and spleen qi.[1,2] I was originally thought to be a variety of ginseng,[2] even though I belong to the Campanulaceae family, but I am still often used as a milder substitute to Korean ginseng.[1]

24.01.2022 Originally, I was a member of the foxglove family, but have now been assigned to the Orobanchaceae family.[1] I have light reddish-purple flowers and am a perennial herb that can grow to 40cm. My root, which is used by herbalists, is orange and tuberous.[1] In traditional Chinese herbal medicine, I have been used for yin deficiency and depending on my preparation I have been used to support the management of febrile diseases, haemorrhage, diabetes, regulating menstruation, and night sweats.[2] Western herbalists consider me for inflammatory conditions amongst other applications.[2]

24.01.2022 Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common condition affecting up to 20% of reproductive age women. PCOS is characterised by hyperandrogenism (hirsutism and/or high testosterone), irregular ovulation and menstruation, and multiple follicles or cysts in the ovaries. PCOS also involves metabolic dysfunction including insulin resistance, which can be a key driver in this condition. The mainstay of treatment is dietary and lifestyle modification to improve the metabolic drivers.... A naturopath or nutritionist is well placed to provide guidance, support and monitoring of these changes. They can also recommend herbal or nutritional remedies to support metabolic and hormonal health. 24.01.2022 Rehmannia has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for tens of thousands of years. In TCM terms, Rehmannia is thought to clear heat, nourish yin and tonify the kidneys. In western terms, this translates to anti-inflammatory, immune modulating and adrenal tonifying effects, actions which have been confirmed by modern scientific studies. These combined effects make Rehmannia a valuable treatment for hot skin conditions which are affected by stress and the HPA-immune-skin a...xis, such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and acne. 22.01.2022 Glycyrrhiza glabra, commonly know as licorice, is one of the more versatile herbs in a western herbalists dispensary. It has a number of actions that make it a particularly useful herb for this time of year. Licorice is traditionally used as an adrenotrophorestorative, meaning it restores the function of the adrenal glands if they are depleted after a period of stress. This helps to reduce the negative effects of stress on immune function. Licorice has shown antiviral and antibacterial activity in _in-vitro_, animal and human studies. It is also anti-tussive, expectorant and demulcent, so it helps to soothe and relieve coughs and sore throats. Whats your favourite use for licorice?

From renowned physicians such as Hippocrates, revered shamans and respected wise women, to reviled quacks and witches. No matter how it has been viewed, the practice of herbal medicine has endured. To ensure this, every batch of raw herbs we use is put through an extensive Quality Assurance program. The second stage of this program involves High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). This is a process used to identify and measure the individual phytochemicals present within a herbal sample. Identifying and measuring the phytochemicals present in an extract aids in correct identification of the herb, ensures that there is no adulteration with other herbs or other substances, and validates the quality and efficacy of the herbal extract. This ensures that only the best quality herbs are used to make our products. It’s all part of MediHerb’s commitment to quality.

17.01.2022 MediHerb takes steps to avoid medicinal plants becoming classified as endangered species. We have developed guidelines to ensure only sustainably produced herbs are procured for our herbal supplements: -Where the threatened status of a herb is specific to a region or country, MediHerb does not acquire the herb from that region or country -MediHerb uses cultivated sources of threatened herbs wherever possible, and works with growers to establish new cultivated sources -If cult...ivated sources are not available, MediHerb then investigates the wildcrafting techniques and protocols to ensure they are conducted sustainably and ethically -Substitution of the threatened herb with a medicinally interchangeable species where possible -MediHerb actively promotes using alternate herbs in place of endangered herbs by educating health professionals -Where a threatened or endangered herb is part of a tablet or liquid formulation, MediHerb will reformulate the product to include a different herb -When a herb is listed in CITES Appendix II as under threat and a cultivated source is not available, MediHerb ceases to use that herb and deletes the product from the range This is all part of MediHerb's ongoing dedication to the practice of responsible herbal medicine.

16.01.2022 Traditionally rosemary was a symbol of marriage and fertility. Some cultures believed that if a girl put rosemary under her pillow, then she would dream about her future husband. During ancient times, women would carry rosemary sprigs in their hands or wear a rosemary wreath in their hair when they got married. After the wedding ceremony, guests would sprinkle rosemary needles into the marriage bed for good luck and fertility.

16.01.2022 What does The Iceman Wim Hof, who can endure long periods of intense cold exposure, tell us about our brain? His method using cold exposure, breathing techniques and a committed mindset has proven to stimulate deep positive physiological effects. Even more interesting is the brain’s level of control by harnessing higher order cortical areas in the presence of intense external stimuli. Neuroscientist @prof_selena_bartlett explains neuroscience in action a little closer to ho...me by suggesting we try the ice hand challenge to switch off/divert our brain when we are stressed or anxious - or better still simply start the day this way to reset your brain. Selena suggests submerging your hands in a bowl with ice and water for 60-90 seconds or for as long as you can. It stops the brain in its tracks during the initial pain transmission and sets off a natural release of endorphins and serotonin, and slows the heart rate. Currently streaming live. 16.01.2022 You may think stinging nettles are just an annoying weed, but they actually have great nutritional and medicinal value. Nettles are rich in vitamins A, C and Bs, plus potassium, magnesium and iron. They are also depurative, so are great for skin conditions and detoxification, and have anti rheumatic, anti inflammatory and anti allergic effects. Nettles lose their sting once they are thoroughly wilted, dried, cooked or pulverised. They taste a bit like spinach and can be used in much the same way. Nettle leaves can be used as a tea, or in soups, smoothies, sauces and dips.

14.01.2022 Many people have experienced the benefits of natural healthcare when they are unwell, but did you know that you can also benefit from seeing your practitioner when you are well? Natural medicine is particularly well suited for preventive healthcare. For example, taking herbal medicines such as echinacea during cold and flu season can reduce your chance of becoming ill with an upper respiratory infection [1]. And eating a healthy diet significantly reduces your risk of develop...ing chronic disease in later life [2]. 14.01.2022 Dietary fats can be divided into saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. Omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids are types of polyunsaturated fats that are essential, meaning they must be obtained in the diet, as they cannot be made in the body. Omega 3 and omega 6 play important roles in regulating inflammation and maintaining cardiovascular function, brain function and vision. Polyunsaturated fats can be obtained in the diet from fish, seafood, nuts, seeds and vegetabl...e oils, or they can be taken as a supplement. 14.01.2022 That stress plays a significant role in the development and mainenance of chronic skin conditions has been known for many years. Research now shows that stress and skin health interact through a complex bidirectional pathway termed the HPA-immune-skin axis. Stress activates the Hypothalamus Pituitary Adrenal (HPA) axis, which triggers the production of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. These hormones alter the function of the immune system and the production of... inflammatory mediators, which have a significant impact on skin health and function. Conversely, environmental stress picked up by the skin can directly trigger the production of stress hormones and thereby trigger the HPA axis. This highlights the importance of treating the nervous system in chronic skin conditions. Peters EM. 11.01.2022 This week is Dental Health Week. Everyone knows that good oral hygiene is important for maintaining healthy teeth and gums. But did you know that oral hygiene could affect your health in other ways? 10.01.2022 New research is suggesting that the key to maintaining cognitive function and avoiding Alzheimers disease and dementia may lie within the gut. A healthy microbiome interacts with the immune system and produces metabolites such as short chain fatty acids and neurotransmitters, which ultimately reduce inflammation in the brain, maintain the blood brain barrier and cerebral blood flow, and assist in detoxifying misfolded proteins including beta-amyloid and tau tangles. It is hy...pothesised that restoring a healthy gut microbiome could play a role in targeted therapy for neurodegeneration and dementia by reducing the level of CNS inflammation, vascular pathology and the aggregations of misfolded proteins. 10.01.2022 International Men's Day is asking 20 big questions about men and masculinity in 2020. One question is SHOULD WE ENCOURAGE MORE MEN TO TAKE ON ROLES TRADITIONALLY DOMINATED BY WOMEN? Natural medicine is dominated by female practitioners. Would the profession benefit from more male practitioners? How would this impact on patients? Perhaps male patients would be more likely to seek and take health advice from another male. How can we encourage more men to study and practice natural medicine? Share your thoughts in the comments, talk to each other and get the conversation started.

10.01.2022 With the increasing complexity of ailments presenting in clinic, and the higher doses and complex formulas of our products, we recognise the need for proper consultation with a qualified healthcare practitioner to ensure our products are safely and appropriately prescribed and dispensed. As a result, at the beginning of this year, MediHerb introduced changes to our product trading terms to ensure the integrity of the use of our products within the profession. The new terms came into effect on Tuesday 28th of January, and state that all MediHerb products may only be dispensed after a consultation in an enclosed room with a qualified healthcare practitioner.

10.01.2022 Childhood is a formative time when our brains are highly neuroplastic. Our early experiences, both good and bad, shape our understanding of the world and our place within it. Due to this, traumatic experiences in childhood can have long-lasting effects as they literally change the shape and function of our brains. Research has found that adverse childhood experiences including abuse and exposure to family violence significantly increase the risk of many diseases including the... leading causes of premature death. Adverse childhood experiences cause psychological trauma, which often leads to the adoption of health-risk behaviours such as smoking and alcohol abuse as coping mechanisms. These health-risk behaviours in turn increase the risk of conditions such as heart disease and cancer. Primary prevention of child abuse and family violence is certainly the ideal way to reduce this risk of harm however this is sadly not always possible. Early intervention and social support offered to children following exposure to adverse experiences can have a mitigating effect on the long-term harms associated with that experience. To learn more about how you as a natural healthcare practitioner can help children affected by early life stress, watch Mediherb’s on-demand webinar Building Paediatric Resilience. 09.01.2022 Migraine can be considered a complex neurogenic inflammatory disorder linked to increased intestinal permeability. Probiotics may decrease intestinal permeability and inflammation, and therefore could reduce the frequency or intensity of migraine attacks. In a scientific study [1], participants took 2 g/day (2.5109 CFU/g) of a multispecies probiotic supplement containing _Bifidobacterium bifidum_ W23, _Bifidobacterium lactis_ W52, _Lactobacillus acidophilus_ W37, _Lactobacillus brevis_ W63, _Lactobacillus casei_ W56, _Lactobacillus salivarius_ W24, _Lactococcus lactis_ W19 and _Lactococcus lactis_ W58 for 12 weeks. There was a statistically significant reduction in the frequency and duration of migraines. This suggests that treating the gut is an important step in migraine management.

09.01.2022 Herbal medicines are well suited for children, being for the most part gentle with few adverse effects. In Germany, a country where herbal medicines are widely used, up to 85% of children use herbs each year. 08.01.2022 I am a member of the Rosaceae family, some have described me as a plant with graceful growth, my foliage is a beautiful shape of clustering blossoms that are considered eye-catching. Like many plants and flowers of the Middle Ages, I have been associated with the virgin Mary, hence attributed to my common name. Key constituents include tannins, ellagitannins, flavonoids and phytosterols. I am traditionally used as an astringent, styptic herb with anti-inflammatory actions. You can consider me for GI infections, diarrhoea, leucorrhoea and pruritis vulvae (topically) but I am a key herb to consider in women’s menstrual woes. I may help in balancing menstrual flow and in easing the symptoms of menopause. Give a hint below if you think you know what herb I am, we will reveal the answer tomorrow.

07.01.2022 If allergic sneezing and wheezing leave you feeling short on air, talk to your practitioner today about herbal and other natural solutions to help you breathe a little easier. Hay fever (also known as allergic rhinitis) is commonly seen in spring when the buds are blooming and pollen wafts in to trigger a cacophony of sneezes, runny nose, streaming eyes, sinus congestion and headaches. However, people can react to almost anything, with common culprits being dust and animal d...ander, smoke, food, and cold. Symptoms leave you feeling washed out till the next sneezing fit begins. Wheezing (breathing with a whistling sound in the chest) is a classic sign of asthma, and may be accompanied by shortness of breath, tightness in the chest and a dry cough. Known as bronchoconstriction, the airways in the lungs narrow and the presence of swelling and mucus make it harder for air to move in and out of the lungs and may even lead to an asthma attack. Symptoms may differ but both hay fever and asthma come back to an immune system tipped towards allergic reactivity. Herbs such as Albizia and Baical skullcap can help quell the overactive allergic response and reduce histamine and inflammation that are responsible for uncomfortable symptoms. Get relief from your symptoms and improve tolerance to allergens (the things you react to) to break free from the cycle of recurring allergies and asthma. 05.01.2022 Endometriosis affects 830,000 Australian women during their lifetime. That’s over 10% of women suffering! Symptoms vary but usually include severe pelvic pain that disrupts a woman’s life every month around her period. It is estimated that endometriosis costs the Australian economy $9.7 billion dollars annually in lost productivity and medical costs. Despite the physical and financial toll endometriosis takes, symptoms are often dismissed as just period pain. This means tha...t there is a 7-12 year delay in diagnosis on average, leading to a lot of untreated pain and suffering. Increasing awareness about endometriosis among patients and healthcare professionals including natural health practitioners will improve diagnosis rates, help drive important research and hopefully aid in finding successful treatments for this insidious condition. So let’s keep talking about endometriosis and help #EndTheSilenceOnEndo. If you have symptoms of endometriosis, a natural healthcare professional may be able to help. Throughout the ages, the healing properties of medicinal herbs have been identified, noted and passed on down through the generations. While modern herbalism may look somewhat different from the instinctive use of herbs by our ancestors, we are still taking part in an ancient healing practice that has stood the test of time.

03.01.2022 Adverse childhood events and exposure to toxic levels of stress during childhood can have profound effects on future health and wellbeing. Research shows that such early stress can permanently alter brain development, neurological function and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis function. This can lead to poor mental health, an increase in health harming behaviours and poor physical health later in life. Ongoing social support in the form of a trusted adult or caregiver durin...g and after adverse childhood events can mitigate these long term effects; however when social support is lacking, intervention is needed [1]. 02.01.2022 Rhodiola is a herb with a long history of use in Asian and Eastern European herbal medicine. Rhodiola is an adaptogen, which means it aids stress adaptation and resistance. Rhodiola also has anti-fatigue, immunomodulating, antidepressant and neuroprotective effects. Demand for Rhodiola has increased dramatically in recent years, and as it grows only at very high altitudes, excessive harvesting has put pressure on wild stocks. When using Rhodiola, it is therefore important to understand where it comes from. At MediHerb, we ensure that our Rhodiola is ethically sourced and sustainably harvested, without exception.

02.01.2022 I am a perennial plant with bell shaped flowers and my root has been used in folk medicine for hundreds of years.[1] These days Im used by Herbalists to support management of anaemia, poor appetite, shortness of breath, anorexia, debility, fatigue and convalescence.[2] I have also been shown to increase red blood cell count and haemoglobin in vivo.[2] In Traditional Chinese Medicine I am called Dang shen and regarded as a tonifying herb with an affinity for lung and spleen qi.[1,2] I was originally thought to be a variety of ginseng,[2] even though I belong to the Campanulaceae family, but I am still often used as a milder substitute to Korean ginseng.[1]
