10.01.2022 "Thank you for taking away so much stress" Kevin* (via email) MediStays recently assisted Kevin to book accommodation in Melbourne. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in November, having experienced some symptoms and finally visiting his GP for a check up. ... Kevin shared "I honestly wasn't too keen to see my doctor. He's a nice bloke but I don't tend to ask for help and probably let it go on for a bit long". Kevin was referred for specialist treatment, which started in mid December. MediStays combined our discounted rates and financial assistance subsidies so that Kevin's out of pocket costs were less then $18/night. There are several strategies to help ensure you understand your medical condition and care options. Taking a trusted p...erson to your appointments is very helpful to ensure you understand the conversation. They might be a relative, friend or someone independent, like a patient advocate. Kim shared "I always make sure I take my support person to appointments when I can in order to make any sense of what they’re saying; he translates for me and does it very well. He’ll summarise for me and ask the questions again" (1). There can be lots of new information, words and jargon shared in a short space of time. Ask your doctor or health professional to explain new words so you understand what they are saying. The more information you understand, the more you will retain and the more informed your decisions will be. This is especially important if you are making decisions and providing consent for a treatment or procedure. Good medical practice involves... providing information to patients in a way that they can understand before asking for consent. (2) There are many more ways and options available, including access to recordings of your consultation, new apps and written information from your medical team.
