20.01.2022 THE EXQUISITE CLARITY OF PINTURICCHIO The Perugia School of Painters - those remarkable Umbrian artistic geniuses: Raphael (Raffaello), the eponymously nicknam...ed Perugino, and Pinturicchio- have left as their legacy among the most exquisite visages of the Madonna, the baby Jesus and saints. Il Pintoricchio nacque Bernardino di Betto. He was also known as Benetto di Biagio or Sordicchi (Perugia 1454 - Siena 1513). His nickname il Pinturicchio means the little painter, perhaps an attribute related to his relatively short stature. Vasari, in his _Lives of the Artists_, tells us that Pinturicchio trained as a paid assistant under Perugino, thus the eerie similarity between Pinturicchios Madonnas and those of the Master himself. Pinturrichio finally settled, married, had children, and lived the rest of life in Siena where he had important commissions for the Cathedral, for the Church of San Francesco, and for Pandolfo Petrucci, the chief citizen of the city. Here we gaze in wonderment at a truly remarkable close-up from Pinturrichios sublime portrait of the Virgin child and Saint in the Topos of the Madonna della Pace (The Virgin of Peace). Pinturicchio, at the time he painted this Madonna della Pace, was among a new generation of artists working in Rome and probably delivered the work around 1490. He used this splendid depiction of the Madonna as a model for later autograph works such as Madonna with the Christ Child Reading (North Carolina Museum of Art) and Madonna with the Christ Child Writing (Philadelphia Museum of Art), both datable to between 1494 and 1498. (See comments) The Madonna we see here is indeed exquisitely rendered; note the sensitive depiciton of her face, its ovoid shape channeling the oval of an egg, the seed that became her Son. The modeling is subtle and soft, her cheeks almost seem to have rouge on them, creating a vibrant vitality, a vividness, her half-lidded eyes portraying both a sensuality and a sadness, a presaging of knowledge of His future Passion and Crucifixion. The veil, in ultramarine, that alchemically transformed lapis lazuli, has a translucency even as it is as a deep blue. Pinturicchio captures the Virgin as if she were sitting in front of his easel. Or right in front of Us. Alcuni commenti che ho scritto anche in italiano: La Vergine è davvero resa squisitamente qui: la delicata raffigurazione del suo viso, la sua forma ovoidale che incanala l'ovale del uovo, il seme che divenne suo Figlio. La modellistica è sottile e morbida, le sue guance sembrano quasi essersi imbellettate su di loro, creando una vitalita, una vividezza, i suoi occhi semichiusi che ritraggono sia una sensualità che una tristezza, una presunzione di conoscenza della Suo futuro Passione e Crocifissione. Il velo,in blu oltremare,trasformato alchemicamente dal lapislazzuli, ha una traslucenza pari ad un blu profondo. Il Pinturicchio ha catturato la Vergine come se fosse stata seduta di fronte al suo cavalletto. 19.01.2022 Leonardo e l'indescrivibile fascino dell'incompiuto... L'Adorazione dei Magi di Leonardo da Vinci, opera del 1481-82 conservata agli Uffizi, è una tavola non fi...nita che ci permette di toccare con mano l'arte di Leonardo. L'assenza del cromatismo rende apprezzabile la costruzione del disegno. La visione non convenzionale del suo genio artistico è immediatamente tangibile nell'impostazione compositiva, del tutto rivoluzionaria rispetto ai modelli precedenti (basti pensare all'Adorazione di Sandro Botticelli di qualche anno prima). La capanna è un semplice tetto spiovente, spostato a destra e non al centro della scena. La Vergine e il bambino sono immersi nella natura, nel bordo di una roccia vicino ad un ruscello. Gli astanti sono presi in un vortice di mirabile stupore: stanno assistendo ad una epifania divina. Sullo sfondo, quello che a prima vista apparirebbe un rudere, è stato identificato come il tempio di Gerusalemme in fase di ricostruzione: curioso è il particolare dei manovali intenti al lavoro. Ma è il lungo intervento di restauro, terminato solo pochi anni fa e abilmente condotto dall'Opificio delle Pietre Dure, che ha reso quest'opera ancora più leggibile in ogni suo singolo dettaglio.
