24.01.2022 Wow Geraldton - what a day! So sorry but we had to close up at 1pm today and will monitor the weather again tomorrow. If it's similar conditions we may need to close again early. Did anyone else have dust literally everywhere imaginable?! Please stay safe in your clean up!

23.01.2022 **RECYCLING CONTAMINATION** Contaminants turn your recycling into nothing more than rubbish. There are many types of recycling contamination, including plastic, food waste, and more. Some contaminants are worse than others and most are easily avoidable, as long our community makes an effort to think about what they are putting into our cardboard and plastics bins. #1 Contaminant: Plastic Bags...Continue reading
23.01.2022 The cardboard baler at Meru Landfill is not currently operational. The City of Greater Geraldton is advising residents to save their cardboard and wait until the baler re-opens. The City will advise when the baler is up and running again.
22.01.2022 This isn’t the sort of thing we’d usually post, but we thought it was worth sharing. Last month, we operated the world’s first zero waste flight from Sydney to ...Adelaide and this photo shows the results. The big white bags in the background contain the waste left behind on one of our normal Sydney to Adelaide flights that day, which all went straight to landfill. The small bag in the foreground is everything left behind on the zero waste flight that couldn’t otherwise be recycled or composted. It was sent off to be re-used as a substitute to fossil fuel to power cement kilns. The difference is stark. Not every flight can be zero waste in the future due to current quarantine laws and the availability of practical, sustainable alternatives. But we are proud to be cutting 75 per cent of our waste to landfill by the end of 2021 and eliminating 100 million single-use plastics every year by the end of 2020. #WorldEnvironmentDay
21.01.2022 The current single bin recycling system in Geraldton had us thinking, Can we do more? The answer was YES! Did you know we are a public drop off point for the Te...rra Cycle Oral Care recycling Program? What does this mean? It means you can bring any packaging from your oral care products into Durlacher Dental Care where they will be sent for recycling. This includes: Empty toothpaste tubes Cardboard packaging from toothbrush and paste Empty Floss Containers Old toothbrushes So as you are squeezing the last bit of life out of your toothpaste tube tonight or pull your last thread of floss from its container, spare the packaging from the bin and drop it into Durlacher Dental Care, 141 Durlacher Street instead. Open from 8:00am Monday- Friday. #Durlacherdental #terracycle #geraldtonrecycling See more
20.01.2022 **Cardboard Recycling** Where does it go? After collection, your cardboard is taken to our facility, sorted & baled. The baled cardboard is delivered to a recycling plant, where it is shredded and mixed with water at a high speed to create paper fibres. The pulp is passed through cleaning and screening equipment to remove plastic, dirt and staples and is then heated to remove ink and glue. The pulp is usually treated with chemicals and heat to loosen the ink.... The cleaned pulp is diluted with water and mixed with smaller amounts of paper making additives. The resulting paper is then turned into new paper and cardboard products like brand new boxes, egg cartons, newspapers and much more. It's really important to keep contaminants out of the designated cardboard bins as it can disrupt the whole process.
20.01.2022 Due to the much anticipated arrival of our new baling machine this month, MEEDAC would like to advise that the tip shop will be unable to take recycling materials from the 6th - 12th March.
15.01.2022 WHICH CONTAINERS = CASH Are you excited for the Containers for Change WA scheme? From October 1, you'll be able to exchange some drink containers for ...a 10 cent refund. Info sessions are being held across the state to help get people ready- here's some of the things you need to know: What's accepted? Most aluminium, glass, plastic, steel and liquid paperboard beverage containers between 150ml and 3L are eligible for a refund. What's not accepted? White milk bottles, wine bottles, pure spirit bottles, cordial and pure juice containers over 1L are not accepted because traditionally these drinks are consumed at home Also any containers that are less than 150ml and greater than 3L. Can I crush the cans? Yes, as long as you can still tell that they are a drink can. Can I start collecting now? NO, you can't start hoarding containers. The scheme doesn't start until October 1, so you are supposed to have purchased and consumed the containers you recycle AFTER that date. We know what you're thinking how will they know? Well, if you rock up on October 1with 500 drink containers they might guess that you didn't consume all those drinks in a few hours. What about the lids? There will be a different box to recycle the lids but you must REMOVE THE LIDS from each container. If you've got other questions like 'how do I get my money?' Or 'where will refund stations be set up?' Check out more info here: https://www.containersforchange.com.au/wa Will you make the effort to take drink containers to a recycling refund point from October 1st?

06.01.2022 TUESDAY TIP >>> Next time you shop, think about whether you can upsize common items that your household regularly uses in order to reduce waste. 01.01.2022 Please do not put our crews in danger by including used tissues in your recycling, as someone did recently. Even under normal circumstances used tissues are not accepted for recycling, but during a pandemic it presents a real danger to staff. Used tissues can be added to your household waste bin.
