25.01.2022 MEET THE MAKER Richard Baxter, Studio Baxter - The Mill Castlemaine Have you ever wanted to learn to paint but thought it was too hard? We catch up with artist Richard Baxter to talk about his painting classes.... How long have you been painting? I’ve loved drawing as early as I can remember. I still have drawings from when I was 4, it’s been an unfailing passion for 50 years. I began painting in earnest at 15. Can anyone learn to paint? I believe so. Everything I do has a logical explanation which can be understood and practised. When you see a person drawing or painting, it may seem like a fully automatic process called ‘talent’ coming from nowhere. There is no reason that everything being done cannot be broken down into simple steps and processes which can be learned. Like many things in life, results are largely based on time and the effort put in. What do you teach in your classes? I focus on two aspects: The first is learning to see. This is a mental process and involves changing the way we think, as we look at the world. The second is the technical side of working, how to mix and apply paints, which brushes to use, mediums, canvases, etc. I don’t focus so much on how to be artistic preferring that people use the skills I teach to find their own direction. However I do hint at options from time to time, in order to help people think outside of the box a little. What advice would you give to beginners? There is no greater skill builder than having fun. Relax, mistakes are fun, learning is fun, achieving something you wanted is fun... make it all fun. Do what you really love, not what you think you should do. Follow your first instinctive passion. Skills build by repetition, and by making mistakes. We won’t repeat a task unless it is fun, so keep doing it and don’t be deflated by not being able to do what you want quite yet. Instead feel inspired to try again and get a little bit better. How did you come to be at The Mill? The Mill is a great location. I was originally inspired to do a painting from a photo I took only 50 metres from my current studio, this was years before The Mill was even established. I also work at Print Together who are based at The Mill, and so was alerted to a vacancy coming up. When are your classes? Classes are currently on Thursdays and Saturdays, 10am, 12.30pm, 2.45pm, and life drawing on Thursdays only at 5:15pm. I also hold a class in Eaglehawk on Wednesdays at 4pm. Painting classes are 2 hours each, Life drawing is 1.5 hours. I may open classes on Fridays also, depending on demand.
