27.09.2021 We lost Flynn this year. Flynn was our 15yo Border Collie. He was my soul dog. Losing him was so hard. A month later and I still miss him every day. What made this harder was the bluntness of children. On the day he was going to the vet my 4yo calls her Nanna and straight out said "Flynn is dying today". I cried. The other is explaining death, grief and the finality of it all to kids. Most kids haven't lost a family member or another pet. So helping them is vital. ... When I was little we lost a canary, my Nanna insisted that this was used to explain death in the case of losing a family member in the future. I know my Nanna was right on the money. A few years later my Poppa passed. It's much easier to understand when you've had proper preparation for loss. Where to start? If you are losing a pet, knowing how to handle the questions and the discussions with your kids will help you get through the tough time. Here is a great page to get you started: https://daybydaypetsupport.com/helping-with-grief/ I'm going to add 1 more thing, don't hide your grief from your children, let them see it, see that it's ok. Talk to them about the pet. When something reminds you of them, talk about it. My 4yo talks to the ashes, even cuddles them. I did draw the line at taking him for a drive. Honesty, love, support.
