23.01.2022 Want to supercharge job creation? Govts need to invest in supporting women's access to employment as a top priority. Funding childcare to fully meet the community need is a key economic driver for our state and our country.
22.01.2022 On my stunning dawn walk this morning, I knew it would be a wonderful day! This morning we made history with the Legislative Council passing the Voluntary Assisted Dying bill - I feel so privileged to have been part of the consideration and passing of this bill. It is a momentous and important step forward towards providing Tasmanians with a compassionate and dignified option as part of end of life care. ... My great thanks and respect go to the Hon Mike Gaffney and his team who worked so hard to bring this bill forward. Mike conducted himself with such respect, inclusiveness and diligence. I have admired his quiet and committed leadership on this issue. It is a good and robust bill, and it will now go to the lower house for consideration and debate.
22.01.2022 The Tas Govt secrecy trend continues. With public submissions made in February on the Future Gaming Market framework still not published online, I put in an RTI request for them. It was refused - on the basis they will be made public at some stage in the next 12 mths! Not good enough. There's an undemocratic culture of secrecy and withholding information under this govt. It needs to change.
20.01.2022 In my budget speech last week I talked about my disappointment in this Budget because it's missing a vision for our state and investment in bold actions to transform the circumstances of Tasmania and its communities. I also called for a gender impact statement to hold the govt to account for its progress on investing in Tasmanian women. You can read or watch my Budget speech here. https://megwebb.com.au/budget-2020-21/
17.01.2022 Thanks for showing leadership Dean Winter - Mayor of Kingborough, Glenorchy Mayor Kristie Johnston, Clarence Mayor Doug Chipman and Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds - speaking out and doing something to stop violence against women. #DoingNothingDoesHarm More than 1 woman a week dies in Australia as a result of violence. The greater Hobart councils are calling on calling on each and everyone one of us to act
11.01.2022 What are your first thoughts on yesterday's state budget? Did it get the priorities and the balance right? I'll be closely analysing it over coming days and will give a budget reply speech in Parliament next week.

The Multicultural Council of Tasmania is running a free information session on Australia’s system of government, and how to get involved in politics in Kingston at 10.30am on 24 November. 08.01.2022 Lest we forget Today we remember the men and women who volunteered, sacrificed, served, fought, and died on behalf of our community and our country. We also remember the Tasmanian families and families from around the world whose lives have been irrevocably changed by the tragedy of war.
07.01.2022 Today is the UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women # DoingNothingDoesHarm Violence against women is a human rights issue, with 1 in 4 Australian women experiencing family violence during their lifetime. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, violence against women and girls, particularly domestic violence, is reported to have escalated in many countries globally, including Australia.... https://www.un.org//obs/ending-violence-against-women-day See more
05.01.2022 It’s Budget Estimates week in Parliament. You can watch the live feed 9am-7pm. My Estimates committee is scrutinising the portfolios of: Minister Ferguson - Monday Premier Gutwein - Tuesday... Minister Courtney - Wednesday Minister Jaensch - Thursday A lot of work and preparation goes into this week - by the Departmental staff and the Ministers getting ready to answer questions, and by the Parliamentarians scrutinising the budget and preparing questions to ask. It's an important accountability in our democratic system.
