25.01.2022 NTEU National Tertiary Education Union are hosting a snap action at lunchtime to tell Centre Alliance to block the disastrous uni bill! You can join them here: nteu.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_NSJG9zvnQUKB05_n97sY6w
23.01.2022 Reckon they will?
20.01.2022 It would be a devastating result of Covid-19 if we were to move to a university system where online is the norm and campus life a distant memory. I’m concerned unis will capitalise on the move to online learning to cut costs and reduce staffing. While there’s certainly a role for online learning, and it can be transformative for accessibility of education, it’s illogical and harmful to have it fully replace basic things like face-to-face lectures.... We can’t ignore that the Morrison government has cut billions from university funding, including through the ‘job-ready graduates’ measures. The incentive to move online is created by these cuts.
19.01.2022 We're not just working to block the Liberals' funding cuts and fee hikes. We're fighting to make public uni and TAFE free for all. Education and training after school is an essential public service, just like our schools and Medicare. Join the campaign: Greens.org.au/unis
18.01.2022 Since the far-right violence in the U.S. last week, the acting Prime Minister has refused to condemn white supremacy and Trump-style politics. Sign the petition calling on the acting PM McCormack to condemn white supremacy and the far-right: https://greens.org.au/campaigns/condemn-white-supremacy
17.01.2022 "I know that we are not alone in wanting to believe that this country is capable of telling the truth about its violent history reckoning with its past, so it can better deal with its present." Take time today to read Lidia Thorpe's words on Invasion Day.
17.01.2022 URGENT: We’ve just found out Centre Alliance are planning to vote for the Liberals’ uni fee hikes and funding cuts after cutting a deal with the Government. The bill is being voted on today so we have to act now. Can you call Centre Alliance to make sure they know voting for the bill is a mistake that will hurt students, communities and our unis?
17.01.2022 The relentless pursuit of profit and power by wealthy, colonial countries and multinational corporations has put the world on track for a global temperature rise of at least 3.4C by the end of the century. Today, Pacific Island leaders published an open letter to Scott Morrison, calling on the Australian government to honour its international climate responsibilities and take urgent action to combat the climate crisis.
17.01.2022 Youth unemployment is nearly 16%. Scott Morrison should be making TAFE and uni free for all and investing in secure, meaningful jobs. Instead his government has hiked uni fees and created a youth jobs scheme that will do little more than boost corporate profits.
16.01.2022 Tax cuts for millionaires are cuts to essential services.
16.01.2022 The #TorresStrait8 are taking a climate change complaint against Australia to the Human Rights Committee of the United Nations. This case is the first of its kind in the world. Find out more and support them: ourislandsourhome.com.au
15.01.2022 A warm summer Canberra evening and this beautiful rose bush make me long for Lahore.
15.01.2022 During the Covid-19 pandemic, as we fell into crisis and global inequality deepened, Amazon became a trillion dollar corporation. CEO Jeff Bezos becoming the first person in history to amass $200 billion in personal wealth. I've signed the petition to Make Amazon Pay. Will you?
15.01.2022 There's just one more senate vote needed to block the fee hikes and funding cuts! Tell Centre Alliance to bin this unfixable bill: Rebekha Sharkie MP - (08) 8398 5566 - [email protected] Senator Stirling Griff - (08) 8212 1409 - [email protected]
14.01.2022 The Liberals’ university fee hikes and funding cuts are coming down to the wire. Join university staff and students live to hear the latest and how you can help block the bill!
14.01.2022 The PM has allowed tens of thousands of uni jobs to be lost, excluded unis from JobKeeper, abandoned international students to long queues outside food banks, slashed more than a billion dollars each year from core funding for teaching and learning, and more than doubled the fees for some degrees. He's not fit to be PM.
14.01.2022 Abolish all student debt.
14.01.2022 Successive Labor and Liberal governments have built a welfare system that fails older women and disabled people. Poverty is a major risk factor for homelessness. Scott Morrison should know this, but he's just thrust hundreds of thousands of people on Jobseeker back into poverty. Even before the pandemic hit, there was a homelessness crisis for older women. The situation has only worsened. ... Research last month showed that 400,000 women over 45 are at risk of homelessness. I fear the next year will see much of that risk become reality.
14.01.2022 The ridiculously hot weekend we had in Sydney was not normal. I spoke with the media in Parliament just now about the urgent need for Scott Morrison and his useless government to address the climate crisis.
13.01.2022 This morning the Deputy Prime Minister doubled down on drawing a false equivalence between #BlackLivesMatter and the assault on the U.S. Capitol. This is such a dangerous equivalence to draw between a racial justice movement and a deadly white supremacist uprising. It simultaneously dismisses the legitimacy & necessity of BLM, while downplaying the existential threat that violent fascism poses to our community. Sickened to hear it from the acting PM.
13.01.2022 Some Koala cuteness for your afternoon! Really inspired by the new Kailas Wild book on his time rescuing Kangaroo Island koalas after the devastating bushfires. We have to do everything we can to protect them
13.01.2022 Access to tampons and pads shouldn't depend on being able to pay for them. Good on Scotland for making sure they're free for all who need them!
12.01.2022 Trust the Liberals to mess up funding education. JobTrainer funds are going to suspect providers and qualifications that are way too short to be useful. We need proper investment to make TAFE and uni free for all, not more privatisation and watering down of training.
12.01.2022 Centre Alliance are yet to confirm their position on the Liberals fee hikes and funding cuts. Can you contact them today to urge them to block this unfixable plan that will hurt students, communities and our unis?
12.01.2022 This isn't over. The community has been fighting this climate bomb for a decade, and they’re not going to stop now. We'll be fighting with them.
12.01.2022 There's a reason Michael McCormack won't condemn far-right white nationalists and conspiracy theorists: He wants their votes.
11.01.2022 Breaking news on the Uni Fee Hikes bill! A cross-section of South Australian Senators including Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young are calling on their fellow South Australians Rebekha Sharkie MP and Senator Stirling Griff to block this terrible bill. It's never been more important to get in touch with these crucial MPs and let them know what you think of the fee hikes and funding cuts: Rebekha Sharkie MP | (08) 8398 5566 | [email protected]... Senator Stirling Griff | (08) 8212 1409 | [email protected]
11.01.2022 This unfixable mess is going to a vote in 5 days!! Join the campaign to block the fee hikes and funding cuts: Greens.org.au/unis
11.01.2022 BREAKING: Looks like Centre Alliance have cut a dirty deal with the Liberals to cut uni funding and hike student fees. We have to stop them. Call and email now: Rebekha Sharkie MP 08 8398 5566 [email protected] Senator Stirling Griff 08 8212 1409 [email protected]
11.01.2022 Australians want climate action and they want it now.
10.01.2022 It's vital we acknowledge the link between politics and the actions of politicians and racism in society. Looking forward to this discussion on just that tonight. Not too late to register to join us at 7pm!
09.01.2022 These three women were international students in Australia. They were all killed during the pandemic. Every women deserves support, no matter their visa status. The government must reverse their refusal to support temporary visa holders.
08.01.2022 More and more people are recognising that Australia has systemic problems with racism. The community is facing up to the ongoing colonisation and racism that permeates our society while many members of parliaments and the media have their heads in the sand. We have to reckon with our past and commit to a more just, anti-racist future for Australia.
06.01.2022 These atrocities are indefensible. We shouldn't just oppose war crimes, we should reject the militarism and nationalism that encourages them.
06.01.2022 Watch Senator Lidia Thorpe's first speech live from Canberra
05.01.2022 URGENT: We need just one more vote against the Libs' uni fee hikes and funding cuts to block it next Tuesday. Centre Alliance are yet to confirm their position on the bill. Can you contact them today to urge them to block this unfixable plan that will hurt students, communities and our unis? I've included a calling guide with lots of reasons to oppose the bill in the comments.... Once you've called and emailed Centre Alliance, you can join the campaign to stop this bill and make uni and TAFE free for all here: Greens.org.au/unis
04.01.2022 I've said before that the untold heartache and sorrow of women being killed will continue until we dismantle the patriarchy that fuels it. As we mark the Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, that remains as true as ever. We must all continue to protest & speak out.
04.01.2022 Centre Alliance has a choice now. Help the Liberals deliver their austerity package and sell out already struggling young people, or join crossbenchers, the Greens and Labor in blocking the bill to demand a better deal for our students and universities. Make sure they know where you stand. Every email and phone call helps:... Rebekha Sharkie MP - (08) 8398 5566 - [email protected] Senator Stirling Griff - (08) 8212 1409 - [email protected]
03.01.2022 Some great news this morning! So glad to hear Kylie will be coming home.
02.01.2022 The climate crisis and global poverty are the result of colonialism, structural inequality and grossly unfair neoliberal trade and debt systems. These systems can’t be fixed. They must be torn down.
02.01.2022 Instead of moving towards the well-funded and fee-free university system we should have and could easily pay for instead of subsidising fossil-fuels or bringing forward tax cuts for the wealthy the government is going to make it harder to go to uni. Everyone who cares about uni students and universities themselves should get on the blower to Centre Alliance MP Rebekha Sharkie and Senator Stirling Griff right now and ask them to block this bill: Rebekha Sharkie MP | (08) 8...398 5566 | [email protected] Senator Stirling Griff | (08) 8212 1409 | [email protected]
