24.01.2022 Kata Seipai by Dai Sensei

24.01.2022 And so with 2020 now upon us, it's time to unveil our new blog. I am hoping that this will be a weekly event.

23.01.2022 A huge vote of thanks to Sensei Mick Doherty, for dropping in on our classes last night. The kids did us proud, and to be told how good he thought they were, was a huge thrill, for them and us. :D Then taking Royce, and myself through some of the changes, helping us keep in time with our brother schools in Sydney was highly appreciated. Add to that the absolute pleasure of your company and the stories you had to tell, it all made for a fantastic evening, and I cant wait for it to happen again.

23.01.2022 It's not Meibukan and it's definitely NOT Goju Ryu, but it does give some very interesting insights into kata and bunkai, leading to application...

18.01.2022 And so another year of training comes to a close. In the New Year, we'll be moving to a new home in Cranbourne East, at the Livingston Family and Community Centre. Now that health issues at home seem to be coming under control, we're looking at building the student base, and hopefully getting time to spend a little time with our brother schools in the North. Looking to make a few changes in the NY as well, but more on that when the time is right. Merry Christmas Everyone!

06.01.2022 "Principles of motion take precedence over sequence of motion", is a quote from Ed Parker, the founder of American Kenpo. I have often wondered about the Japanese term Kuzushi, and what principles I need to apply to my Gojyu/Goju Ryu training in order to make Kuzushi a part of everything I do. Wikipedia describes Kuzushi as: "(:) a Japanese term for unbalancing an opponent in the Japanese martial arts. The noun comes from the transitive verb kuzusu (), meaning to level..., pull down, destroy or demolish. As such, it refers to not just an unbalancing, but the process of putting an opponent to a position, where his stability, hence the ability to regain uncompromised balance for attacking, is destroyed. In judo, it is considered an essential principle and the first of three stages to a successful throwing technique: kuzushi, tsukuri (fitting or entering) and kake (execution). The methods of effecting kuzushi depend on maai (combative distance) and other circumstances. It can be achieved using tai sabaki (body positioning and weak lines), taking advantage of the opponents actions (push when pulled, pull when pushed), atemi (strikes), or a combination of all three." While this description is informative and somewhat educational, it still doesnt tell me how to apply Kuzushi to my own, and typically, my students training. According to the glossary of Japanese Terms found at davideaton.com/glossary.html KUZUSHI is defined as; "The unbalancing of an opponent either physically (as in a foot sweep), mentally (as in stepping on an opponents foot before punching to distract him), or spiritually (as in a fierce kiai just before an opponent attacks to "drain" his fighting spirit)." This is part of my latest blog post. To see the whole post, including a video example of Kuzushi, go here; https://www.meibukangojyuryu.com/blog/principles-of-motion

04.01.2022 Many of todays practitioners are too timid in their training. They train with only the thought of being able to finish and not with the thought of progressing... pushing yourself to become better. You must train hard if you want to progress otherwise you are just a mediocre practitioner, and there are many of them. . If you wish to learn mediocre karate, go some place else and do not waste my time. . If a teacher teaches with his heart he can only expect the student to train with their heart. It is only right then both the teacher and the student progress. The student motivates the teacher and the teacher teaches the student the correct attitude and spirit of the Okinawan martial arts. This is good training the student and the teacher progressing together! . When you train you have to devote yourself only to the way of Karate think of nothing else. You must not only learn body movements but also research and study the art itself. . Chshin Chibana passed away in 1969 at the age of 83. He never stopped training. . . . . #karatedo #karate #martialarts See more

03.01.2022 So, at last, the news is in. We will have our first class, for 2020, next Monday beginning at 6pm. Leading up to the first class in our new home, I thought I might share a few thoughts I have about the very first step from the very first Goju Kata, I ever learned. This post is titled "The Journey Of A Thousand Miles" and its opening line is, "Begins With The Very First Step". It is something that has always made me wonder about the possible applications, and caused many hou...rs of analysis with training partners that werent always voluntary. For the Martial Artists out there, Im hoping those who know the various Kata mentioned will want to express an opinion. For those Martial Artists that arent familiar with the Kata mentioned, Im hoping that we may find something that is common to one or more of your Kata and give us a bit of common ground for application discussion. One of things I have found over the years, is, sometimes, we need to look beyond the obvious. Of course, sometimes, the obvious is all there is...
