23.01.2022 We are so pleased and grateful that Olivia Vivian - Athlete has nominated Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA) as her charity partner on Channel Nine's Celebrity Apprentice Australia (melanomaWA is part of MIA): "I’m so honoured and proud to announce that I’ll be representing @melanomainstituteau on the up and coming season of Celebrity Apprentice. For those that don’t know, I lost my father to this brutal form of cancer back in 2013. To this day it still pains me to my core,... but it’s organisations such as @melanomainstituteau that bring me comfort knowing medicine is constantly evolving and the chances of survival have increased dramatically with their efforts. Melanoma is the 4th most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia. What’s amazing is it can be prevented and treated if caught early. Even though my involvement in this TV show is far outside my comfort zone, what brings me peace is knowing I’m fighting for something larger than myself. If you’ve managed to read this far down in the description, ask yourself are you doing everything within your power to prevent yourself from Melanoma? Remember to protect yourself from the UV with clothing, hats, shades and 50+ Sunscreen, and don’t put off getting your skin checked. Head shot by the amazingly talented Zahrina Photography. "

He was last in Tasmania in March when he attended Melanoma March Devonport with his dad just a few days before the country went into lockdown. 06.01.2022 We are extremely proud to announce that Professor Richard Scolyer, MIA’s Co-Medical Director, has been named Outstanding Cancer Researcher of the Year in the Cancer Institute NSW Premier’s Awards 2020, NSW’s highest accolade for cancer research. Professor Scolyer was recognised for his pioneering melanoma research which has made a worldwide difference to the assessment, management and survival of people with melanoma. Chief Cancer Officer and CEO of the Cancer Institute NS...W, Professor David Currow, said the body of work amassed by Professor Scolyer throughout his career has made a real difference to how clinicians and researchers think about melanoma. Ten years ago, people diagnosed with advanced melanoma had their life expectancy measured in months. Now, Australian people with melanoma have a range of increasingly personalised treatment options. There are people alive today, in NSW and around the world, thanks to work done by Professor Scolyer and his amazing teams, he said. Professor Scolyer said We have an amazing team of people doing world leading melanoma research and it’s a huge honour to be leading that team and to be recognised in this way. Pathologists have a unique role to play in translational research and are key members of multidisciplinary teams which are conducting research at a high level. Pathologists are the bridge between the patient and what goes on in the research laboratory, bringing a unique perspective in order to facilitate research.
