24.01.2022 #MAChistorical: Bali is known for its rich tradition of theatre, dance and masks. Two charactersparticularly important in the local mythology that spectators find in performances are Barongand Rangda. The former is the king of the spirits and the latter, demon queen. Complex in appearance, the two are engaged in the eternal battle of good and evil. Here are Barong andRangda (with claws) by traditional Balinese painter Ida Bagus Made Poleng (19151999).

21.01.2022 #MACcontemporary: Invented by the Mexican artisan Pedro Linares (19061992), the alebrije is a brightly coloured figurine of a fantastical animal made of papier-mâché or wood. It is particularly very famous today in the state of Oaxaca in southwestern Mexico. The word alebrije doesn’t mean anything. It is related to a dream that Linares had in 1936 when ill. He saw a strange forest with strange creaturesa turtle with stars for eyes, a donkey with butterfly wings, a roos...ter with bull horns, a lion with an eagle’s head. All of them shouting, "Alebrijes! Alebrijes Alebrijes!" Image 1: Alebrije bird sculpture. Credit: User LoriLee, CC BY-SA 3.0, Wikimedia Commons. Image 2: Alebrijes in Oaxaca, Mexico. 16.01.2022 #MAChistorical: Called the Romeo and Juliet of the East by Lord Byron, Layla and Majnun (literally: Layla’s mad lover) goes back to 7th-century Arabia. The star-crossed lovers here are the Bedouin poet Qays ibn al-Mullawah and Layla al-Aamiriya. The narrative has been passed onto Persian, Turkish and Indian languages and explored in a variety of media over centuries. Rejected by Layla’s father for being mentally unbalanced, Majnun takes to wandering, while Layla is marri...ed off to a rich and noble merchant. Eventually, Layla passes away in heartbreak and Majnun is found dead in the desert. This is a miniature of the story from the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland made during the Mughal rule in medieval India. It is based on a scene from book Khamsah of Sufi poet Amir Khusrow (1253-1325). Layla is seen meeting Majnun for one last time, in the wilderness.

13.01.2022 MACcontemporary: On April 16, the ever-inventive @banksy posted a bunch of rowdy rats in his bathroom with the caption My wife hates it when I work from home. One rat is upon a toilet seat, another on a roll of toilet paper. Rodents swing from towel rings, play with nozzles, count days. The trompe l’oeil is made up of simple black drawings. The post, which has garnered over 30,000 comments as of now, is a brilliant example of the fact that resourcefulness is more important for a creative person than access to too many resources.

06.01.2022 #MAChistorical: In the discourse of art history, a veduta (plural: vedute) is a city view and a capriccio (plural: capricci) is an imaginary view. The first is a realistic rendering of destinations like Venice, Rome or London. The second is an architectural fantasy in which liberty is taken while displaying archaeological sites, old monuments, elements like fountains and statues. ... Here are the two concepts explored by the Italian painter Giovanni Antonio Canal (16971768) akaCanaletto. The veduta (from 1732) shows the entrance to theVenetian Arsenal, which is a cluster of former shipyards and armories. The capriccio (from 1742-44) shows some ruins and greenery. We do not know what place this is.

26.12.2021 #MACcontemporary: Here is an interesting excerpt from Linchpin (2010) by American authorSeth Godin (born 1960): Art isn't only a painting. Art is anything that's creative, passionate, andpersonal. And great art resonates with the viewer, not only with the creator. What makes someone an artist? I don't think it has anything to do with a paintbrush. There arepainters who follow the numbers, or paint billboards, or work in a small village in China, painting reproductions. Th...ese folks, while swell people, aren't artists. On the other hand, Charlie Chaplin was an artist, beyond a doubt. So is Jonathan Ive, who designed the iPod. Youcan be an artist who works with oil paints or marble, sure. But there are artists who work withnumbers, business models, and customer conversations. Art is about intent and communication, not substances. Art is a personal gift that changes therecipient. What is your personal definition of art and artists?

23.11.2021 #MAChistorical: Dating back to the 11th Dynasty of ancient Egypt and approximately 4000 yearsold, the tomb of Baqet IIIa provincial governoris known for its murals. Located in the BeniHasan cemetery south of Cairo, on the banks of the Nile, the tomb features a very long series of images that apparently depict the sequence of events in a wrestling match. This is an earlyexample of human interest in "motion picture" and, interestingly, is studied in the history of... animation.
