25.01.2022 ‘Riding the wave' and ‘urge surfing’ are terms therapists use to describe the experience of tolerating an uncomfortable emotion as graciously and safely as possible. Used in conjunction with mindfulness, we are encouraged to become aware of the change, accept what’s happening, and use the right approach to tolerate the emotion until it passes. As we practice mindfulness, we witness the nature of impermanence, we notice many changes in the way our body feels, the way our commu...nity responds. We notice ideas and reactions come and go, we practice letting go, we practice not holding on so tightly but instead riding the wave as smoothly as we can. As we transition from life in lock-down to our new found freedoms, it's important to remember how to ride the wave of uncertainty. You can read more from Dr Sonja Skocic's article on our website. 15.01.2022 Our brains may crave quick sources of energy when we’re tired, have you noticed this happening around 3pm?. Chocolate, sugary drinks, cake, biscuits, take-away foods give us an immediate energy hit that doesn’t sustain us. We are likely to crash soon after and continue to crave an instant energy source. There are foods we should choose when hungry or tired and those we have because we crave them. When lacking energy or feeling tired choose foods from the five food groups th...ey’re a steady source of energy, which means you’ll avoid the highs and lows that come with more refined foods. Remember there are no good or bad foods, just bad ways of eating. All foods are morally neutral. Here are some ways to fuel your brain and keep the 3pm crashes at bay: Eat three main meals a day from the five food groups (protein, fruit and vegetables, wholegrain, dairy, liquids) Choose wholefood snacks if hungry, to keep you going between meals, answer your cravings with whatever it is you crave, If you’re on the go, keep a nourishing snack on you so you’re not relying on fast food or vending machine snacks. Drink water most people need around 2 litres per day, and more when you’re exercising. #foodie #food #dietitian #dietitiansofinstagram #3pm #crash #lowmood #stablemood #foodandmood #foodfuel #fuelfood #psychology #melbourne #melbournedietitian #happyfood #goodfood #eatwell #wellness #mindfuleating #women #wellwomen #liquids #water #drinkwater #drinkwaterdaily #calm #calmmood #awake #stablebloodsugar #brainfood

05.01.2022 In CFT to strengthen our compassionate self we can focus on three core qualities, which research has shown can enhance our own sense of wellbeing: -Wisdom in compassion helps us step back in life and understand when something is truly helpful and when it is not. It understands that life can be difficult and we are all shaped by our own life experiences. Our brains are tricky and can get struck in loops in our mind, thinking over and over. Using wisdom allows us to understa...nd our own life but also helps us take responsibility. It also helps us understand what would be a helpful response to difficulties that arise and what we may need to do to deal with difficulties that alleviates or reduces distress. Our wisdom also helps us accept when we need learn new skills or seek others support. -Caring commitment and non-judgement add warmth and kindness to our wisdom. We do not want our wisdom to be applied in a cold or detached way, which is often what we offer ourselves. A genuine intention and desire to be caring, supportive, and helpful and a commitment to doing what we need to do to alleviate suffering is called upon. -Strength and courage focuses on our ability to sit with and experience distress, to turn towards and engage. We aim to develop a sense of inner confidence, authority, strength and courage to engage in our and others distress and not be overwhelmed by it. It helps us be grounded to tolerate and approach the things we need to. This again, sometimes calls upon us to learn new skills to engage this courage and strength. 03.01.2022 The benefits of meditation are well-known, but in case you need a reminder here’s some reasons why people meditate: To reduce stress and anxiety To improve attention span and memory loss To generate kindness and lower blood pressure... One of the most common difficulties people have in establishing a regular practice is finding the time. Start with 10 minutes and plan to meditate every day. You know logically that you can find 10 minutes and that 10 minutes spent meditating is not going to ruin your schedule. If you plan to meditate every day then you will probably end up meditating 5 or 6 days out of 7. If you only plan to meditate 4 days a week, it will probably end up being 2 or 3 days. Once your routine is established and you start to enjoy the benefits of meditation, you won’t want to let a day go past without meditating. Try to meditate at the same time each day. There is no ‘ideal’ time to meditate. Think about the time that is going to work best for you and that fits in with your other commitments such as family and work. There may be other considerations such as your level of tiredness in the evening, for example, which might mean that morning meditation is going to work better for you. Decide how you will time your meditation so you will know when to finish your session. You can choose to quietly check your watch when you think your time is up, or use a meditation timer which you can buy or download an app. Once you have been meditating for a while, you will become quite good at estimating the time correctly. For more tips visit our website or book a one-on-one session with Gwenda Cannard Meditation Teacher.

02.01.2022 Food is fuel for our body and mind. Nourishing our bodies enables growth and repair and helps us function well day to day. Our brains need nourishment too in fact our brains use around 20% of our energy intake each day. Nourishing food provides the building blocks and energy for optimal functioning. There is no one super food for improving mood it’s about balance, good variety and including food from all of the five food groups. Think of foods working together like a symphony... orchestra, each player contributes an important part to get the best result. Variety ensures we obtain all the vitamins and minerals, healthy fats, fibre and protein. Improving your eating patterns and diet quality has been shown to reduce stress, improve sleep, increase concentration and improve mental wellbeing - Diane Rennard, Senior Dietitian #food #wellbeing #healthy #variety #wellness #yum #foodismedicine #drink #water #coffee #figs #photography #melbourne #dietitian #advice #calm #rest #goodfood #foodphotos #Melbcentre #women #healthywomen #womenempowerment #womenpsychology #psychology #psychologymelbourne #eggs #protein #carbs #nutrientdense Brooke Lark See more
