25.01.2022 One of the best aspects of being a part of a lineage is knowing that you are part of both history and the future... its important to look back to know where our arts came from, but also to use such history as inspiration to continue the tradition, ensuring that it is passed on properly to the next generation. Videos like this are wonderful glimpses into the past... and allow us to strive to be worthy of being a part of a living tradition.
24.01.2022 Something to keep in mind at all times....
24.01.2022 While our hiatus continues just a bit longer, a bit of inspiration for us to enjoy! If you dont have this dvd, and are a practitioner of Tenshinsho Den Katori Shinto Ryu with us, please ensure you try to get a copy. If youre having troubles finding it, let me know.
23.01.2022 So.... which one is you? Go on... be honest....
23.01.2022 The Keishinkan in Perth is our parent dojo for Tenshinsho Den Katori Shinto Ryu, and has been going for over 30 years now! The name of the school () was given to them by Sugino Yoshio-sensei, and means "club/hall of enlightenment"... indicating the focus on developing not only martial skills, but also the higher aspects of yourself, allowing you to reach your true potential through the study of classical arts (Katori Shinto Ryu, Iaido, Jodo) and modern traditional arts (Tomiki Aikido). As an aside, another meaning behind the name is that the first character, Kei, is pronounced in Japanese the same way that the beginning of Katie Noad (head instructor and founder of the dojo)s name!
23.01.2022 The Hombu Dojo for Tenshinsho Den Katori Shinto Ryu is a relatively small space at Iizasa-sokes house in Katori, Chiba-ken. It is not used for regular practice, but instead is used for certain special events. These images are from a short training session there as part of the annual pilgrimage to Katori Jingu and to see Soke in December, 2019.
22.01.2022 Photos and more to come from Yuishinkan Sugino Dojo to keep inspiration going!
22.01.2022 This past weekend, all the group leaders and representatives of Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu from around the world, along with Kiyomi Ono and Takanori Kajiya-soke took part in a group video chat to discuss the current situation, and ensure our community remains strong! This piece of calligraphy was put up by our Italian Shibu with a powerful message for us all! Alone may be fast, but together we can go further! So stay sure the school will continue, and go further when this is all over!
22.01.2022 UPDATE REGARDING TRAINING: As per the announcement from the Victorian Government today, it appears that classes will be able to resume as of Monday, 22nd June! That week is our keiko for Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu, with Tenshinsho Den Katori Shinto Ryu the following week... check back closer to the date for any further updates!
21.01.2022 An interesting look at some of the meanings behind Musashi-senseis artwork... further showing the depth of the tradition we study! https://ichijoji.blogspot.com//miyamoto-musashis-squirrel-
21.01.2022 Very interesting photos! Sugino-sensei performing Ryoto and others with metal blades....
19.01.2022 Sadly, it has been decided that keiko must be temporarily suspended until further notice. I look forward to returning once this is all over!
19.01.2022 A description and demonstration of Shinto Ryus shurikenjutsu methods.
18.01.2022 History!!! The Yoshioka family was very famous at the time, and considered some of the premier swordsmen of Japan... after their encounter with Musashi, their school was destroyed, and the surviving members retired. This also marked the first time Musashi used his two swords in combat, taking on multiple enemies at the same time.
18.01.2022 So... I can just get my menpo and wear that? Awesome!
18.01.2022 The famous Kokura Hibun, located in Temukeyama Park overlooking the Shimonoseki Strait (where the location of Musashis last duel, Ganryujima, lies), was erected by Musashis adopted son, Iori. It serves as a monument, history, and epitaph to the respected sword master and founder of Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu.
14.01.2022 For those that have Foxtel, this would be channel 656, 10:30am tomorrow... otherwise, NHK often replays these programs, and has them as a streaming option on their international website. Note: I haven't seen any advertising for this, it could be wonderful, it could be... less than. But certainly worth having a look at!
13.01.2022 A new blog site from a dojo-mate in Germany... with some quite thought provoking content! Thanks, Ren Pascal Esemann! http://inoshishikukan.com/
12.01.2022 A friend of mine is making the most of his time in containment (in the UK)... once things hit this point here, Ill be ramping up my own home keiko in a similar way... any other takers?
12.01.2022 Our parent dojo in Perth is about to restart classes, and we will be following suit in a few weeks (from June 22). All the best to the returning students, and welcome to those starting their journey!
11.01.2022 These are challenging times, especially as we can sometimes struggle to stay motivated in our personal practice... but its important to remember that all times can be challenging... and challenges come in all forms! Fortunately for us, there will be an end to our current situation... so keep your motivation up... and remember that the job of a martial artist is to meet challenges and overcome them!
11.01.2022 Sugino Yoshio and Ito Kikues original Japanese version of Tenshinsho Den Katori Shinto Ryu Budo Kyohan. The book is now translated into both German and English, and is an invaluable aid in practice when away from my teachers!
11.01.2022 The Melbourne Koryu Kenjutsu Keiko-kai will resume practice this coming Monday (22nd June). Anyone interested in studying either Hyoho NIten Ichi Ryu or Tenshinsho Den Katori Shinto Ryu are invited to contact the page for details. I look forward to seeing all current students!
10.01.2022 Some interesting thoughts on the use of both swords...
10.01.2022 On June 13th, 1645, Miyamoto Musashi died. The founder of Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu, author of the Gorin no Sho, Dokkodo, and other texts, celebrated sumi-e artist, Musashi died shortly after creating the Book of Five Rings, and the maxims for life, the Dokkodo. Musashi-sensei spent many years of his life engaging in combative duels, many to the death, literally putting his life on the line to find and express his truth and his study of the art of strategy... this may seem a destr...uctive act to some, but it was really the opposite. Musashis life was spent in the service of his art... meaning that, more than almost anyone else in Japanese history, Musashi has managed to achieve an immortality known to very few. Today, his influence and legacy is still present, in his artworks that are considered masterpieces (including the self portrait shown here), his design for gardens at Himeji-jo (Himeji Castle), his written works, still studied around the world, and, of course, in his martial school, the Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu. We at the Melbourne Koryu Kenjutsu Keiko-Kai are honoured to be a part of the legacy of Musashi-sensei, as the Australian Branch of Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu under the 12th Soke, Kajiya Takanori-sensei, and take this solemn date to reflect on the wonderful art and teachings that Musashi has left us to today!
10.01.2022 I shared a different version of this video earlier this month, but thought I'd share this post as well... covering a bit of the more recent history (well, the last 100 years, at least) of the school, including why there are two lines that are recognised by Iizasa-soke.
09.01.2022 My advice for the coming months.
08.01.2022 An interesting piece of history... Not only showing the influence that Sugino Yoshio-sensei had on martial arts in popular culture in Japan, this photo encapsulates for me why we train the way we do... if you look closely, you can see a lot of similarities between Sugino-sensei and the actors... but there are also a large number of differences... differences that mean the usage of their weapons would be impeded... they would be robbed of power... speed... they are exposing su...ki (weaknesses)... and are unprepared to launch an attack. What does this mean? It means that, just because you have been shown something, even tried it a number of times, doesnt mean youve actually learnt it... and certainly doesnt mean you can do it yet! So keep practicing... keep training... repeating the same thing in order to minimise your suki, and maximise your strengths! Training begins again next Monday night...
08.01.2022 Yesterday was the 408th Anniversary of one of the most famous duels in Japans history, taking place on a small island in the Shimonoseki Strait. This island was known at the time as Funajima (Boat Shaped Island - the island would later be renamed after one of the participants and their personal art), and the duel marked a major turning point in the life of both participants... in each case, marking an ending. For one, it was the end of their time as a duelist... an end to t...heir search for challenges in life and death conflict... and saw him embarking on a deeper study and reflection on strategy and understanding... leading to the formulation of the culmination of all his work and experience, the Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu. For the other, it meant simply their end. They were, of course, Sasaki Kojiro, and Miyamoto Musashi, and this was the Duel on Ganryujima Island.
07.01.2022 Some interesting history here...
07.01.2022 We all enjoy a little escapism now and then, and a highly anticipated game, Ghosts of Tsushima, has just been released. Based around historical events at the end of the 13th Century in Japan, the incredible look of this game has many people applauding its authenticity and realism... but how close is it? This is an interview a friend of mine did regarding the game... highlighting the importance of recognising what is real, and what is entertainment!
06.01.2022 A recent demonstration by members of the Tenshinsho Den Katori Shinto Ryu in Italy, representing the Sugino Dojo, at the European Koryu Convention. The group is lead by Claudio Regoli-sensei, a very experienced practitioner and Kendoka.
06.01.2022 UPDATE REGARDING CLASSES RESUMING. With todays announcement of the City of Moreland being a "no travel zone", we are suspending the return to class until further notice. My apologies for any inconvenience, and please continue to monitor the page for further updates.
06.01.2022 Proper technique, te no uchi, transfer of power, correct hasuji, are all important.... ........ ........ ........ ........... Maybe something needs to be said about quality equipment as well.... See more
05.01.2022 November 3rd is, in Japan, Culture Day, and is celebrated with one of the largest marital arts demonstrations (embu taikai) of the calendar... this year, of course, has been cancelled due to the Covid-19 situation, so in it's stead, let's take a look back to last years embu, and the offering of the Sugino-dojo, representing Tenshinsho Den Katori Shinto Ryu and Iizasa-soke. We all look forward to such events resuming! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4DojkRhKyc
05.01.2022 A brief overview of Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu.
04.01.2022 For anyone who sees these items.
04.01.2022 Shrines and religious buildings often feature in the history of Japanese Martial Arts... but not often like this!
03.01.2022 Shindo Muso Ryu is one of my biggest interests outside of my present study... its an interesting case study of what happens when Shinto Ryu meets Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu.....
02.01.2022 Teaching is all about communication...
01.01.2022 First keiko of 2020 tomorrow night with Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu! Looking forward to it greatly!
01.01.2022 Thank you to all who attended our Zoom Catch Up on Tuesday... it was fantastic to see you all again, and I hope to see you in person soon!
