23.01.2022 There's no point banning birth pools, proven to help women manage labour and avoid invasive interventions, if it doesn't do a darn thing to reduce Coronavirus transmission. The pandemic can't be used as an excuse to eliminate alternatives to high-tech intervention$ and enable obstetric management and control of birth. Anyone who knows me will know, that with my background working as a nurse in an infectious diseases paediatric ward; to successfully preventing gastro-enteritis..., lice and bronchiolotis in children's refuges in remote parts of North Thailand and western China; to living in Hong Kong with 3 children under the age of 5 during SARS, I am very willing to act in good faith and throw my weight behind public health measures to reduce virus spread, help the hospital system not get swamped and help saves lives, livelihoods, health and well-being of as many people as possible. In fact - having gone to bat over evidence-based public health measures rather than jumping on the fundamentalist-fed conspiracy theory band-wagon, I've made few friends and plenty of frenemies. But this. Fine, let's do all we can to help, comply, cooperate and work together. But it has to be evidence-based, sensible, and reasonable. And this isn't. There is NO science to even hint that water births could in any way increase the transmission of Coronavirus or increase risks for staff, mothers or babies. So no. Just - no. (And thank you ACM for going to bat for us). (Side note - no wonder I've been getting heaps more orders for Homebirth/Freebirth Kits).
22.01.2022 Cloth, disposable, and some research to help you figure out the pros and cons.
22.01.2022 Hold all our independent midwives in your hearts. We ask for homebirth rebates, we ask for waterbirth privileges - then ---- The timing of it seems as suss as heck to me.
20.01.2022 Handy map to help you find a homebirth midwife near you.

20.01.2022 "A Queensland Health spokesperson said women and their families should not feel concerned about giving birth in hospitals." (Being denied the support of your chosen support people; being pressured into inductions or forced into epidurals; or having your baby taken away from you, with skin-to-skin contact forbidden, as some hospitals around the globe are doing, in total contravention of WHO recommendations, all not concerns women should worry their pretty little heads about) "...Our facilities remain safe and our care remains world class," the spokesperson said." (Surely the point is that homebirths are likewise safe, and the care of independent homebirth midwives also remains world class, and therefore homebirth should be a funded option) "A Federal Department of Health spokesperson said there was no plan to add homebirthing to the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS). "There is no consideration of a MBS homebirthing item at this time," the spokesperson said." (Well its about time that changed then. There is no basis upon which to deny women the choice of birthing at home instead of hospital. Resource it and fund it. Dont tell us we have to Stay Home and then tell us we cant Stay Home when we want to labour or give birth at home.) https://www.abc.net.au//coronavirus-fears-drive-/12138386
20.01.2022 Stay home is the message. And this latest research again demonstrates that staying home to have your baby is a safe and reasonable alternative. Especially when there are reports of hospitals banning support people, mandating epidurals or even separating babies from their mothers and denying them skin-to-skin, against WHO advice.

18.01.2022 HOMEBIRTH OPTIONS DURING COVID! . . In the Herald Sun, no less! .... . Congratulations to Grace Sweeney @gracesweeneyau, co-ordinator for Homebirth Australia @homebirth_australia australia for this excellent piece. . . And congratulations to this sweet family, who I had the great pleasure to serve as doula for! But I didnt make it to the birth! Baby arrived in a bubble of stillness in the small hours of the morning, while a storm (not to mention Covid) rampaged outside. Midwife and doula (me) arrived with the dawn. Superstar mama, herself a doula @catherinewinter_au . . Speaking to other homebirth midwives round about, its clear that with physical distancing restrictions affecting what kind of labour support women can have during birth, more women are looking at other options. . . If youre making birth plans, , in the Melbourne area, and stuck for options - PM me. I can put out a request to the wider birthy community and see if we can get you all set up. . . #homebirth #homebirthAustralia #melbournedoulahomebirth @melbournedoula #birthinthetimeofcovid See more

18.01.2022 Excellent interview with Grace Sweeney from Homebirth Australia - have a listen. I have really noticed more women choosing homebirth due to CV restrictions imposed in hospitals. Its reflected even in the volume of orders I receive for Blissful Herbs. https://www.3cr.org.au//ep/homebirth-and-covid19-pandemic
18.01.2022 Wow, this virus really wants us to use cloth, homebirth, homeschool, homestead, disconnect with capitalism and connect with nature and the wisdom of the feminine, huh? Its like Mother Nature got pissed off and finally gave her ungrateful children a clip round the ear.
17.01.2022 My observations and thoughts: we cant close schools because both parents need to work and we dont want grandparents looking after them because they are in the... elderly risk group. Thats the sub-text in a lot of what we are hearing. Congratulations humans, we broke the model which worked so well right up until recent decades. We devalued motherhood as an occupation, pushing first-time childbearing into our 30s and 40s, therefore pushing grandmotherhood into our 60s, 70s ... even 80s. Concentrating our breeding into one or two children, we traveled far from our extended family and distanced ourselves from aging parents in the quest of career and home-ownership. Balancing paid work, childcare and eldercare all at once became impossible. We outsourced our infants, children and parents in our quest of consumption and competition. Regardless of rights and realities, our fractured society of deconstructed villages has left us exactly where we deserve to be. #thefutureisnow #webrokeit

15.01.2022 "The trauma of COVID-19 (we are all traumatised by the uprooting of our norms) has torn away the veil from the eyes of many women. In the time of COVID-19 the benefit vs hazard balance between hospital and home has been dramatically altered, possibly forever." https://uncommongroundmedia.com/home-birth-in-the-time-of/

12.01.2022 Well this is quite an insight into internet mis-use. Here's Heather's book. When you look at the reviews ... they're all negative. Hmm, right? 05.01.2022 It was International Womens Day on 8 March - the theme was I am Generation Equality: Realizing Womens Rights. We cant talk about womens rights and birth... in Aotearoa, without highlighting the work of Joan Donley, without whom we would not have the midwifery system we have today. "Joan Donley was a midwife whose advocacy of home births and natural childbirth helped shape modern midwifery in New Zealand. She argued that women should have the right to reject medicalised maternity care, and helped establish several organisations which promoted natural childbirth and an extension of the rights of midwives. Donley regarded home birth as a feminist and a political act by which women could reclaim their bodies from the white, male-controlled obstetrics and gynaecology specialty which is trying to gain a complete monopoly of childbirth in New Zealand." 02.01.2022 You Were Made For This - Clarissa Pinkola Estes Ours is not the task of fixing the entire world all at once, but of stretching out to mend the part of the world... that is within our reach. Any small, calm thing that one soul can do to help another soul, to assist some portion of this poor suffering world, will help immensely. It is not given to us to know which acts or by whom, will cause the critical mass to tip toward an enduring good. What is needed for dramatic change is an accumulation of acts, adding, adding to, adding more, continuing. We know that it does not take everyone on Earth to bring justice and peace, but only a small, determined group who will not give up during the first, second, or hundredth gale. One of the most calming and powerful actions you can do to intervene in a stormy world is to stand up and show your soul. Soul on deck shines like gold in dark times. The light of the soul throws sparks, can send up flares, builds signal fires, causes proper matters to catch fire. To display the lantern of soul in shadowy times like these -- to be fierce and to show mercy toward others; both are acts of immense bravery and greatest necessity. Struggling souls catch light from other souls who are fully lit and willing to show it. If you would help to calm the tumult, this is one of the strongest things you can do. There will always be times when you feel discouraged. I too have felt despair many times in my life, but I do not keep a chair for it. I will not entertain it. It is not allowed to eat from my plate. [...] In that spirit, I hope you will write this on your wall: When a great ship is in harbor and moored, it is safe, there can be no doubt. But that is not what great ships are built for. --Clarissa Pinkola Estes
