18.01.2022 Faculty biography: Michael Wells Michael was born in 1989, in the seaside town of Blackpool, in Lancashire, UK He started playing baritone at the age of 9, simply as there was one in the school music cupboard going unused! Under the expert tuition of jazz trumpeter Terry Reaney, of the Syd Lawrence Orchestra, he achieved the Diploma of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (DipABRSM) at the young age of 17. He was also a member of the National Youth Brass Band of... Great Britain for 6 years, holding the principal baritone position for 5 years. Michael began top-level playing in 2006 when he was invited to play solo baritone with the famous Fairey Band, in Manchester, and in 2007, Michael began studying under David Thornton and Steven Mead at the Royal Northern College of Music. Here he played baritone and trombone and enjoyed experiencing diverse ensembles across classical, jazz and avant-garde music. In 2009, Michael was invited to audition for principal baritone with the world-famous Grimethorpe Colliery Band. He enjoyed half a decade of extremely busy, but wonderful years with the band, which took him to Australia, Switzerland, Belgium and every corner of the UK Particular highlights were performing at the Royal Albert Hall, playing at the London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony and a subsequent recording for the soundtrack, at Abbey Road Studios. Michael also played on several CD recordings during his time with Grimethorpe. At the end of 2013, Michael left Grimethorpe and the UK to move to Australia. He arrived in Melbourne on New Year’s Day 2014 and began playing solo baritone with the Box Hill City Band soon after, where he also conducted Box Hill Academy Brass. Michael moved on to euphonium with the band and now plays solo euphonium with Victoria’s premier A-Grade band, Darebin City Brass (Preston Band). Michael has played on several recordings with Box Hill and Darebin, as well as being a member of the Australian Tuba Quartet. He has also performed in concert as guest soloist with the University of Melbourne Brass Ensemble. He has adjudicated solo competitions at state and national level in Australia and New Zealand. Michael is now a permanent resident of Australia and is a classroom music teacher in Melbourne’s south-east. In his spare time, he enjoys travelling, driving and relaxing under the blue skies of Australia. [email protected]
