15.11.2021 Queen at Festival Hall 1976 Borrowed from Lost history of Melbourne Facebook page 1976: Explosive start to Queen’s Festival Hall concert... First published in The Age on April 20, 1976 Concert a Queen hit Frenzied fans of the British rock group Queen were dragged from the stage at the end of a Festival Hall concert last night.Freddy Mercury and Queen perform at Festival Hall in Melbourne. Bouncers had their hands full as young girls tried to leap on to the stage at lead singer Freddie Mercury. At the end of the show, Mercury stripped to a pair of red and white hot pants and threw roses to the audience. The crowd mainly teenyboppers went wild. The four-man group stunned the capacity crowd with explosions and flooded the stage with smoke. Explosive start to Queen show Queen spewed blinding light, color, sand, smoke, explosives and roses on to its capacity audience at Festival Hall last night. Their rough blend of hard rock and theatrics almost approached the feelies of Huxley’s Brave New World for audience participation. Explosives burst all around the group as they arrived on stage and lead singer Freddie Mercury leapt into Sweetlady. With a champagne glass held between his black painted fingernails Mercury toasted Melbourne and invited the audience to join along do anything you like take your clothes off if you want. And the predominantly teenybopper audience almost did. After a medley of songs from Queen’s four albums, Mercury launched into Jagger-like posturing across stage and then into Prophet’s Song. After a very late start at 9.45 their equipment was late arriving they gave a full two-hour blast. They also kept an almost constant dialogue with the audience throughout the night. Sadly it dragged when lead guitarist Brian May give an overlong solo, finishing with a treatment of Waltzing Matilda. The break was needed as the rest of the band left the stage for a quick beer. At the end of the second encore, Mercury, dressed in red-striped hot pants sang Shirley Bassey’s Big Spender and threw roses to the by now hysterical audience. Finishing with Jailhouse Rock Mercury wished the crowd goodnight everyone sweet dreams. Queen then closed the chow with God Save the Queen. The group will give another concert tonight before, going on to Brisbane for their last Australian appearance

29.10.2021 Borrowed from lost history of Victoria and pioneers Facebook site Opened in 1924, the RSL building at 88 Acland Street included 12 apartments for returned servicemen, meetings rooms and a small hall on the first floor, four shops at ground level and a large hall at the rear. This hall was known as the St Kilda Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial Hall. The hall was initially used for balls and dances, but with plenty of competition from the palais in the area, it became a cinema i...n 1927. In 1951, Telefil Recording Studios took over with Russ Thompson and Bill Armstrong utilising the hall for a range of audio recordings, including jazz records for the Barnards and Frank Johnson’s band. Bill later established Armstrong Recording Studios in South Melbourne, which became the largest audio recording facility in Australia. He has made a significant contribution to Australian sound recording, acknowledged by multiple industry awards. He was made a Member of the Order of Australia and inducted into The Age Music Victoria Hall of Fame in 2015. After becoming a film studio and rehearsal space in the 80s and 90s, the Memorial Hall is now known as Memo Music Hall and is once again home to live music. Australian jazz luminaries such as Kate Ceberano and Vince Jones have performed there several times throughout 2015-17. As part of the St Kilda Summer Jazz weekend in March 2016, Rebecca Barnard performed Songs My Father Taught Me in the same space where her father Len Barnard had recorded decades before. The Pearly Shells, Jazz Party and other great jazz, funk and soul artists such as Renée Geyer have also graced the Memo stage.

14.10.2021 The commercial screamed 1980s Melbourne https://youtu.be/0AWljCHGdEg Swagman Restaurant borrowed from Sherbrooke Foothills historical society Postcards found on ebay sometimes conjure up old thoughts and memories. These two postcards help to remind us of a different time. ... The Swagman Restaurant in Burwood Highway, Ferntree Gully ( where Aldi supermarket is now located) was well known all over Melbourne. Was there a more popular spot in all of the Ferntree Gully district? Encouraged by a constant TV advertising campaign, people travelled from all over the place to enjoy the smorgasbord and entertainment. For some , a night out at The Swagman was a very special event. There was Lunch for $9.50, and savings could be spent on Crown lagers , helping to enjoy the luxurious experience at The Swagman. Beautiful dancers added to the entertainment. We were ever so excited by all the seafood. There was more food than you could poke a stick at.
