24.01.2022 Did you know that there are over 180 million pallets in circulation in Australia annually? And many billions are used as the backbone of the global supply chain- almost all products are moved on pallets at one point in their life cycle. These often-overlooked items might be holding your mattress up off of the floor, or be nailed together to make a garden bed in your local community garden. We love using ingenuity to repurpose resources once they have reached the end of their ...intended use. Recycled and reused components, including pallets, will make up a big part of the decor and cladding of Skyfarm's landscape. This reduces embedded energy in our building materials by recycling resources rather than using virgin material. https://slate.com//pallets-the-single-most-important-objec

23.01.2022 This farmer in New Zealand has transformed a suburban backyard into a thriving community-supported agriculture operation. @Freeman Farms has recently received a massive grant to research the benefits of hyper-local urban farming, and wants to see these small farms popping up across every suburb in NZ! Similar studies in the US indicate that local fruit & veg farms employ more than 4x as many full time employees than fruit and vegetable farms not engaged in local markets. The benefits trickle back to the community in other ways, with UK data suggesting consumer spending in independent local food outlets supports 3x as many jobs as spending at national chains!

22.01.2022 We are all about making Urban Farming more accessible to people in cities-- but what about those of us who want to start farming on a big way, but aren't sure how to go about it? One of our team members, Sam, has been matching aspiring farmers with their future farms through his social enterprise, Cultivate Farms! Farms are often passed down through families, but sometimes children of farmers aren't willing to take on this responsibility, and aspiring farmers not from that background can feel locked out of the industry. Cultivate Farms helps find a perfect match-- like a dating app, but with more 'hay' than 'heeeyyyyy ;)'

16.01.2022 Our hearts are with our friends and inspiration in NYC, Brooklyn Grange. What a beautiful view and beautiful project, providing farm-fresh produce to their amazing city.

16.01.2022 Now this is an amazing rooftop transformation! Lots of great takeaways from this video, including the emphasis on soil, and using vertical trellising to maximise space.

16.01.2022 Our parent company Biofilta is looking for a new General Sales Manager! This person will be intimately involved in the construction of Melbourne Skyfarm, and be at the helm of a revolutionary Australian-made and owned urban farming company. Contact [email protected] to apply

15.01.2022 This food garden we recently installed at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) is a sample of the growing infrastructure that will be up on Skyfarm. Edible herbs, fruits, flowers, and a citrus orchard brighten up this courtyard- showing we can grow food in urban spaces throughout our cities!

15.01.2022 We enjoyed making this short film on transforming cities, rooftops, backyards, workplaces and schools into thriving urban farms and food producing areas. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did making it. #circulareconomy #naturebasedsolutions #urbanagriculture #urbanfarming #foodsecurity

14.01.2022 Peas please Gardening is getting us through this tough winter. Our hearts and green thumbs are with everyone in Melbourne We will get through this and have exciting things to come!

12.01.2022 Did you know that in many cities, over 50% of the land use is devoted to cars, roads, and car parking? We want to turn some of this under-utilised space into habitat for plants and animals, and a productive resource for people! Thanks to Broadsheet Melbourne for this write-up about our project last year.

12.01.2022 Don't have enough space or energy to start a soil-based urban farm? Spring onions, lettuce, even pineapple can be resprouted at home in a jar of water-- giving you a taste of growing your own produce on your windowsill!

11.01.2022 Great story the other night on 9 News Melbourne on our sister company Biofilta and the Foodcube. These water efficient urban farms are helping households to reduce food bills, improve household sustainability and access to fresh food. This is especially useful in a time of Covid restrictions, giving families something fun to work on, and reducing the need to head to the shops. We are looking forward to seeing efficient urban farms in every backyard, school, workplace and neighbourhood In future!

09.01.2022 The design of Seafarer's Rest Park, which will be located right next to Skyfarm, has been unveiled by the City of Melbourne! This is part of the larger Seafarer's development by Riverlee Group that is going up along the historical sheds, to preserve Melbourne's maritime history. This park has been designed by Oculus to increase urban diversity in the area, creating a space for people, plants, and animals to engage in the urban environment. ... And best of all, it's at the base of what is soon to be our beautiful urban farm! https://www.oculus.info//seafarers-rest-a-new-park-for-mel

08.01.2022 This food garden we recently installed at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) is a small taster of the growing infrastructure that will be up on Skyfarm, and also an example of how businesses can enrich the experience of their staff and visitors with a lush, food-growing garden in any space.

06.01.2022 We are so proud of one of our founding organisations, Odonata, who run Mt Rothwell - Biodiversity Interpretation Centre and have been crucial in protecting endangered native species for many years. After the habitat of the critically endangered Western Rock Wallabies was threatened by bushfires earlier in the year, they were able to be rehomed at Mt Rothwell! Conservation projects such as this are so important to protecting Australia' unique wildlife. At Skyfarm, you will be able to learn about and chat with experts at leading conservation projects around the country! https://www.abc.net.au//wallaby-airlines-hops-in-/11949762

05.01.2022 One of our founding companies, Biofilta, has set up this gorgeous and productive community garden at Australia's most sustainable housing development, Live At The Cape! Check out these photos to see how community and urban farms enrich and increase the resilience of communities.

03.01.2022 The past few weeks have seen unprecedented numbers of Australians purchasing seedlings and seeds to start growing their own vegie patches. Minimising trips to the grocery store, and maximising time spent at home, has made growing your own food an increasingly attractive option. While this practice is new for many, it is reminiscent of the Victory Gardens of WWII, where citizens grew produce in as many plots of land as possible in order to aid their communities. The period we ...are currently in is unsettling in many ways, however seeing so many people gravitate toward gardening as a way to produce for themselves, their neighbours, and improve mental health seems like a positive. On Skyfarm, we will showcase a working urban farm with a huge range of produce. We are really happy to see people getting their hands dirty and keenly learning about growing vegetables. We can't wait to open up to share our love of urban agriculture with you all!

01.01.2022 We've been lucky enough to be sponsored by the City of Melbourne's Urban Forest Fund, which seeks to increase green space in the city, and encourage interaction with nature. The Urban Forest Strategy also includes a map of all the trees in the city, where you can see their species or check up on their age and health. Did you know you can also email all the trees in the city? Trees play an important role in our lives, constants throughout our growth, and symbols of important events. Check out your city's trees here http://melbourneurbanforestvisual.com.au/

01.01.2022 In these unprecedented times, OzHarvest Melbourne continues to work hard to deliver fresh food, safely, to those who need it most. We are proud to have donated hundreds of kilos of produce to this effort, grown from the Test Garden for Skyfarm in Port Melbourne. Once operational, most of the projected tonnes per annum grown on Melbourne Skyfarm will also be donated to food charity. With more people facing unemployment and a culmination of other social and financial strain, Ozharvest's work is more important than ever. To read more about their Coronavirus response, and to donate to help feed people, visit their website https://www.ozharvest.org/ozharvest-response-to-coronaviru/
