22.01.2022 Humans are a social species and we subconsciously regulate each others nervous systems without any awareness that we do so. Other species regulate each other as well. Social insects, like termites, regulate each others nervous systems with chemicals. Rats, too, do it with smell, but they also use touch and hearing. Primates add vision. We humans use all of these senses to regulate each other, but we also use words. When I speak certain words to you, it has an effect on you...r brain. The parts of your brain that process the meaning of my words also happen to be regulating your body your circulatory system, your respiratory system, your immune system, and your metabolism. Some of the brain regions that are responsible for speaking and understanding language are also controlling the systems of your body. If I speak certain words, your heart rate might go up and you might breathe more quickly, even though we are on the phone and we cant even see each other. 19.01.2022 To effectively combat stress, you need to activate your body’s natural relaxation response. Steps to elicit the relaxation response: 1. Sit quietly in a comfortable position.... 2. Close your eyes. 3. Deeply relax all your muscles, beginning at your feet and progressing up to your face. Keep them relaxed. 4. Breathe through your nose. Become aware of your breathing. Focus on a word, phrase, short prayer, or only your breathing. If you choose for example the word one As you breathe out, say the word, "one", silently to yourself. For example, breathe in ... out, "one",- in .. out, "one", etc. Breathe easily and naturally. 5. Continue for 10 to 20 minutes. You may open your eyes to check the time, but do not use an alarm. When you finish, sit quietly for several minutes, at first with your eyes closed and later with your eyes opened. Do not stand up for a few minutes. 6. Do not worry about whether you are successful in achieving a deep level of relaxation. Maintain a passive attitude and permit relaxation to occur at its own pace. When distracting thoughts occur, try to ignore them by not dwelling upon them and return to repeating "one." With practice, the response should come with little effort. Other everyday trances are the patterns we seemed to run over and over againlosing our temper after vowing it would never happen again, having that next smoke or drink when we promised ourselves wed had our last or just this one, always running late, out of time or losing things. When we feel anxious we are going into a trance where the future which has not yet happened feels real right now. This is self-hypnosis using time distortion going into the future. When we feel we cannot escape our past, leading to a sense of helplessness and hopelessness, we are using time distortion bringing the past into the present. 13.01.2022 -- Freedom from Anxiety at Last The Story of a proud Mom and her Hypnotherapist -- A 5 Minute Read This is Jade, a 39 year old proud Mom of two who came to... my office in June of 2018 as a last resort to deal with her anxiety. Unfortunately, hypnotherapy is usually seen as just that A last resort. It is my hope that sharing stories such as Jades will allow hypnotherapy to become a first response. It was the usual story medication, regular panic attacks, constant psychologist visits and a sense of overwhelm. Jade had a full-blown panic attack on sitting in my office, her neck locked up and she was hyperventilating. Logically, she knew she was safe in that moment, but a part of her was telling her otherwise... Upon calming down and after a bit of reassurance, I asked Jade how long she had suffered from anxiety. All my life The first time she remembered feeling anxious was at 18 years old; a family incident resulted in the same nervous feeling in her body and an overall feeling of being unsafe. There is a saying in society that goes, "time heals all wounds". Unfortunately this is only true at a conscious level The conscious mind knows that smoking is bad for you, excessive chocolate is not a great idea and that you dont need that extra glass of wine - but the logical, conscious mind represents only 10% of our awareness. Our subconscious mind represents 90% of our awareness, it is an incredibly powerful storehouse of information where all of our habits, patterns, behaviours and memories reside. Our logical, conscious mind has no control over our emotions; its left to our child-like subconscious mind (the 90%). The biggest role of our subconscious mind is to keep us safe and to ensure our survival. It thinks that we need our symptoms like anxiety or depression as coping mechanisms or something worse may happen - in essence our symptoms are there to protect us. The conscious mind loves the concept of time Linear time. Say youre 40 today, you were born 40 years ago and if a trauma (be it your parents divorce, crime, bullying, abuse) happens at age 10, society says time heals all wounds or its time to get over it. The problem (and blessing) is, in the subconscious mind, there is no time, there's only energy. Every sight, smell, sound, feeling and experience has left an impression that has been anchored in your subconscious. That imprint could be a result of an event (something that happened), a belief (what was believed at the time of the event) or a feeling (the feeling that the event evoked). Once Jade had entered the relaxed state of hypnosis, I gave her the suggestion to go back to the very first time she ever felt the same anxious feeling in her body to take her to the root cause of her anxiety. Jade went back to a memory long forgotten from when she was 4 years old. She was standing in front of a male family member who mocked the freckles on her nose, calling her fly-**** nose. This interaction had been suppressed for 35 years and her emotional release from remembering it was enormous. The reality is that Jade's subconscious was stuck with the feeling she first felt at Age 4 and with the belief that she wasnt good enough. Since the interaction with her family member, she thought something was wrong with her, and the same feeling of anxiousness had stuck with her every day. The same belief and feeling was compounded with bullying in primary school and then in high school along with various events in life. The energy had built and built to the point where at age 39, it was debilitating. In a hypnotic state, we healed and released the event; washing the healing all the way to the present day and beyond. Jade was released from her anxiety at long last. Hypnosis is widely misunderstood but there is nothing mysterious about what I do. It is a natural state that you go into many times each day where youre focused on one activity and everything else falls to the background. For example, when youre driving. You may pull into the driveway after a long day and not remember the last 10 minutes of the trip! Or when youre watching a movie and youre sad or scared. Your logical, conscious mind knows that youre safe in your living room, watching a screen and that its not real. But youre not thinking about work, bills, kids, tomorrow, anything, youre in the moment and youre in your subconscious mind, which feels scared from the events in the movie. When that state is accessed in a therapy setting, the wonderful storehouse of the subconscious mind is accessible and incredible healing can occur. Contrary to popular belief, you can hear and remember everything in a state of hypnosis and of course, you are in control the whole time. I believe that anxiety is not a mental illness but rather a safety system that can be released. It takes bravery to confront what holds us back, but it is well worth it. In todays society, we generally address the symptoms of a problem rather than deal with root causes. On addressing the root cause, life-changing transformations are possible. Ironically, Hypnotherapy is considered "new-age" yet it has been used for thousands of years all over the world. Modern Allopathic medicine has only been around since the early 1800's. This type of work is relevant for anxiety, phobias, anger, addiction, compulsions, sleep issues, depression, grief and other such issues. I check in with Jade from time to time and here is what she says about her experience and her life over 18 months on: "I am happy 99% of the time! Things don't bother me as much, I don't stew over things anymore, I've let go of some long standing grudges which use to cause me angst and negativity. I'm more patient and kind and happier within myself. I am no longer looking for something to make me happy (food, shopping, addictions, society approval), I am happy within myself and have a calm inner peace which I never had before. ADHD is a legitimate brain disorder - the prefrontal cortex (PFC) is impaired, thus these people do experience busy brains, because their limbic... system is poorly regulated by the PFC. But we can learn to calm our overactive limbic systems - and this is what Mindfulness provides. Practice mindful meditation for 15-20 minutes daily, first thing in the morning or later in the evening before going to bed: Sit in a quiet, comfortable place on a straight-back chair or floor cushion. Relax your muscles; do not lie down. Select a word (such as peace, love, etc) to focus on. Close your eyes and follow the rhythm of your breath. Repeat your chosen word, either silently or aloud, as you breathe in and out. If your mind wanders, dont quit. Just let your thoughts go and refocus by repeating your chosen word. Continue for 10 to 20 minutes. Therefore, we may ...think that were doing it wrong. Somehow we are failing at happiness. That isnt true. Being able to enjoy happiness doesnt require that we have zero suffering. In fact, the art of happiness is also the art of suffering well. When we learn to acknowledge, embrace, and understand our suffering, we suffer much less. Not only that, but were also able to go further and transform our suffering into understanding, compassion, and joy for ourselves and for others. One of the most difficult things for us to accept is that there is no realm where theres only happiness and theres no suffering. This doesnt mean that we should despair. Suffering can be transformed. As soon as we open our mouth to say suffering, we know that the opposite of suffering is already there as well.
