09.01.2022 I made this video about 16 years ago after first creating the Online Studio. I still totally stand by the principle of what I was saying here ie. What is essential for a keen student of art (to truly discover their creative side) is to make sure that they find a way to delve deep into the foundation subjects of creativity. Sometimes people are so impatient to be like someone else, do what someone else is doing, appear to be an artist...that they spend months or years trying ...to "be creative" by copying what they can from other artists. NEWSFLASH...this is arguably not actually 'being creative'....at all. They are dudding themselves out of the biggest reward that comes from learning how to think creatively and apply this to an art form. (I guess it all depends on one's definition of 'create'.) I think of 'produce' or 'reproduce' as the verb that is most apt in many kinds of arts and crafts. Many people got into knitting, embroidery, colouring and other forms of producing to keep their hands busy during lockdowns. I know of 'artists' who, for a living, reproduce the same concept over and over in slight colour variations and formats and even sell them regularly(are they being creative??) Others took up drawing and painting during lockdown, over Zoom. Maybe some of them actually learned a thing or two about drawing principles, colour harmonising, composing, designing. In these cases they could have truly felt as if they were developing their creativity. ******************************************** My main message in this post is ....never 'settle' for just reproduction if creativity is your goal. Find the teacher or teachers whose methods best suit your goals and focus early in your creative journey on building your skills in the elements and principles of design, drawing/drafting and technical application skills in a range of media, so that you can fast-track your creative thinking alongside your practical skills.

04.01.2022 https://buff.ly/2MCGzNF What can we do with oils that we can't do with acrylics? There is not one simple answer to this question. There are so many variables involved in this equation.

03.01.2022 HAPPY CHRISTMAS, HAPPY HOLIDAYS to everyone connected with Melbourne Art Classes. Thankyou for your support and patronage during the most difficult of times. Let's take all of the positives and work towards a fantastic 2021!!

01.01.2022 Starting out on your journey of creativity can involve a moment of confusing frustration as you stand in the art store and hope that the part time student working behind the counter knows at least something of what you are asking about. Sadly, many stories from students in that situation reveal that the staff in art stores get very little in-services or instruction from manufacturers or store owners, so a lot of research needs to be done by each student on their own behalf. T...his is why we have a few pages dedicated to de-mystifying the process of deciding on your first art materials (see these by visiting the top 7 black links on the Online Studio) https://buff.ly/2GV1Gaz
