25.01.2022 Bee-hive for your bee-hind?! Chris Thiele on King Island got quite the shock recently when he lifted the lid to his outdoor long-drop toilet! "Lifted the li...d and was chased by bees very unhappy! I did get a stick and push the lid back down," he said. What a sweet and un-bee-lievable story! : Chris Thiele

20.01.2022 "Well, as far as seasons go, in fact as far as the year 2020 goes, it can now finally be formally recognised as a ‘shocker’ (note: insert your word/expletive of... choice). 'Snowless Horribilis' has been confirmed, with only 1947 looking worse (on the data we can find); however, the current forecast is predicting a last minute insult of a snow front hitting the resort (as you are reading this) only adding insult to injury. Whatever the outcome, Winter 2020 is one to forget. "On that note, October 4th marks the end of the 2020 ski season." Read the full wrap-up from Falls Creek Resort Management CEO, Stuart Smythe, in our latest edition. https://bit.ly/32CwMPk Chris Hocking

18.01.2022 Wanted: someone who loves bees as much as we do. This is a unique opportunity to join a pretty special business: a large-scale, Victorian-grown beekeeping and h...oney-making operation that’s been in the same family for five generations. Punching far above its weight for its size, Warral Maldon cares for thousands of hives, producing over 200 tonnes of single-source honey each year for multinational food manufacturers with globally-recognised quality standards. In fact, you’ve probably already had Warral Maldon honey in your ham, energy bar or ready-made meal - and we have our sights set on a rapid and exciting expansion. With great-great-grandson of the founder and current Managing Director Lindsay Callaway at the helm, we’re not looking to fill a particular role as much as we’re trying to find a particular person. Whether you’re at the assistant or manager level or anything in between, if you’re ready to take on the apiary industry within our ranks, we want to hear from you. Who we’re looking for: - A hard-working problem solver with a collaborative, down-to-earth character. You might not have beekeeping experience, but you’re keen to learn all about it. Someone comfortable working with flexible hours, often away from home up to 4 nights at a time. - An outdoorsy type, willing to work in the open throughout the warmer months - we promise an ice cream on the way home has never tasted so good! - Someone fit enough and willing to lift heavy boxes of honey (30-35kg). - A bee-lover who recognises that sometimes they don’t love us: you will get stung. - Experience dealing with the stress and practical problems that come with working in remote areas, like bad weather and getting bogged or broken down. - Someone who works well with a small, tight-knit team who rely on each other - we always win and it feels good when we do. Key responsibilities: - Beekeeping, of course! Assist in brood management, moving hive materials, shifting bees, removing honey, and always keeping an eye out for improvements in the way we do things. Ensuring our brood remains disease-free is our top priority. - Helping extract our excellent honey, including operating specialised equipment in our plant - you will get sticky! - Adhering to strict food quality and safety standards, as per requirements from our globally-recognised BRCGS and BQual certifications - Construction of new hive material and maintenance of old to be performed with quality workmanship. Your focus will be on safety, quality then quantity - in that order. - Beeswax processing: help melt, process and package our beeswax in a time-efficient and safe manner. Cleanliness of area, floor and equipment is a must. -Maintain a written beekeeping diary and apiary record relating to all work performed. - Safely driving trucks, cars, forklifts and frontend loaders in various weather and road conditions, keeping on top of vehicle maintenance records. - Ongoing preventative maintenance of plant equipment. - Represent Warral Maldon and further what we do at beekeeping conferences and trade shows. - General team and administration duties, including a daily catch up with Lindsay, weekly staff meetings, answering phones and enquiries, helping dispatch orders, and maintaining written records and plans. You might have: - Experience in carpentry, woodworking, construction or similar. - Spent a lot of time outdoors - you love camping, nature or maybe you’ve worked as a park ranger, gardener, landscaper. - Experience working with vehicles and equipment, possibly as a mechanic, toolmaker, sheet metal worker or boilermaker. - Completed an apprenticeship in an adjacent industry as a tiler, electrician, chef, or similar. Qualifications - ideal. - Current driver’s license. - Current heavy rigid truck license - Current forklift license - Current front end loader license. Qualifications - nice-to-have, but we can help you attain these if you don’t have them. - Food Handling Certificate - Current First Aid certificate level 2 (CPR) - Agricultural Chemical Users permit - Biosecurity for Beekeepers (BOLT) permit If this sounds like you, please introduce yourself alongside your CV in an email to [email protected] by 30 September. Successful candidates will be invited to a socially-distanced interview at our HQ in Maldon, Victoria in the first two weeks of October. The role is permanent part-time, four to five days a week. As we’re looking for a personality not a specific role, remuneration is to be negotiated based on experience and qualifications.

16.01.2022 BENDIGO BRANCH V.A.A. INC. 41ST ANNUAL BEEKEEPING FIELD DAY 2020 CANCELLATION OF 11TH OCTOBER 2020 HARCOURT FIELD DAY - RE COVID-19 The Bendigo Branch V.A....A. Inc.’s President and executive committee has decided, in the interest of public health, after careful consideration of the collated opinions (gained via a survey of its members) and together with thorough consideration of the health advice, guidelines and pandemic restrictions regarding COVID-19, to cancel this year’s 2020 annual beekeeping field day which is usually held at Harcourt. As you are aware this is a rapidly changing situation. Bendigo Branch’s main priority is to ensure the health and safety of all beekeepers, traders, general public, volunteers, members and participants involved. This decision has not been made lightly. We apologise for any inconvenience caused to all who were looking forward to this event. We would like to assure everyone that subject to new or continuing COVID-19 restrictions we will be working towards conducting our annual beekeeping field day again on the second Sunday of October in 2021. In the meantime, Bendigo Branch is exploring the possibilities of keeping its members connected by holding Q&A educational sessions and/or business meetings etc., replacing face to face meetings, by using the on-line resource of ZOOM. The Committee thanks everyone for their understanding and patience as we negotiate our way through this difficult period. We trust that you will be able to continue supporting the beekeeping community by attending our next beekeeping field day and perhaps, in the meantime, linking with us via Facebook and ZOOM. We look forward to the future. Kind Regards, Carol Maunder (Secretary) On behalf of Bendigo Branch V.A.A. Inc. See more

04.01.2022 These cactus bees feel the pressure when it comes to their young.

03.01.2022 I had an experience today with an orchardist in the Shepparton area who is wanting bees for his orchard. He has previously had a recreational beekeeper put his ...hives on the property for free for between 8 and 10 weeks. The orchardist initially has cherries, apricots and plums, followed by pears and finally apples. This year the recreational beekeeper could not place his two hives there due to covid. The orchardist said that he was told that two hives on his 50 acre orchard is plenty and any beekeeper will do it for free as we are all looking for places to put our hives. Also the honey we make from his orchard more than covers any costs to the beekeeper. So... was he shocked when I gave him a quote and told him all the above information was rubbish. If you are a recreational beekeeper and want to pollinate... think about it. You will not get honey from the above fruit....you will subject your bees to chemicals ( especially in the Shepparton area)... Your hives will often take a beating and take weeks or even months to bring back to reasonable strength..... your costs will far outweigh any profit.... You will make no money out of the job....and finally you will create the wrong mindset for the orchardist who then needs to source hives from elsewhere. Dabbling in pollination requires knowledgable beekeepers who can provide effective pollination services, provide accurate information to the grower, and be paid for their trouble..... Think about it. This passio...n is what drives to me to volunteer many hours of my time to support the industry, says Therese Kershaw. Therese has paved a solid path for other women in the honey bee industry by going above and beyond to prove herself and her skills, working hard to make positive changes for the industry.
