25.01.2022 How many times have you herd of been told that a mama needs wine to get through her day with her kids? Even though it is often said as a joke, this is a cry for help disguised as a joke. Mamas don't need wine . Mama's need real and significant help. Mama's need support. Mama's need practical help. Stop joking about wine like we need it to survive. We don't. We need community and support. Provide the help. . . . #melbournebirthing #placentaencapsulation #mamaneedswine #support #melbourne #newmum #communityofcare #wine #help

24.01.2022 Feeling the heaviness of this day that changed the course of the indigenous people of this land. Knowing that Birthing on Country is an option not available to many who are living in remote communities, and the treatment that is being received by those birthing is disrespectful and completely unacceptable. 23.01.2022 What do you know about the TCM of placenta encapsulation? Based on Traditional Chinese Medicine principles organic lemon, ginger and chilli is added before steaming the placentas! It is believed that chilli itself is warming, lemon is a grounding remedy which alongside ginger aids in circulation and the distribution of healing properties throughout the Chinese Medicine adding these will restore the warmth a woman has lost following birth, and therefore assisting in her bodys re-balance, promoting an equal amount of yin (cold) and yang (warmth) once more. . . . #placentaencapsulation #placentacapsules #placentapills #traditionalchinesemedicine #melbournebirthing #placentaremedies #placenta #newmum #postnatal #maternity #pregnant #birth #placentalove

23.01.2022 So today is R U OK day. The idea that we reach out and see if people are OK and raise awareness of depression in the hopes to reduce the stigma around it. Super lovely idea. Super noble. Super important. However... The fact that mental health support is still a luxury and completely unafordable for many, that police not trained in mental health are doing welfare checks, that virtue signalling seems to be the cure for depression really shows how shit this day is. People ...need really support, affordable help, a sense of connection and community, recognition of system trauma, properly trained police and mental health workers. And above all we need to see the persons lived experience as true and valid. People are the expert in their own lives. R U OK day is not enough unless other things change. .... #ruok #ruokday #melbournebirthing #traumainformedcare #pnd #placentaencapsulation #notgoodenough See more

23.01.2022 I don't think the internet likes it when I create posts with the "P" word "pandemic But, guess what? I doubt the pregnant people love all the extra stress and anxiety they're dealing with right now that didn't exist a year ago. So I want to talk about it, because it matters. If it feels hard to be pregnant right now that's because you are under MORE stress than what you expected. The worries are big and endless. This feels hard because it IS hard.... It's NOT that you're not coping well. It's NOT that you're not cut out for this. It's NOT that you made the wrong decision to get pregnant or stay pregnant. It's that there are very real pressures and worries piling up on top of you, and those are outside your control. A recent study found that as many as 57% of pregnant women are experiencing clinical levels of anxiety, meaning the anxiety is so intense and prolonged that it significantly disrupts normal functioning. This is a big deal. Normally, the rate is about 20%. So if you're struggling right now, it's not your fault. Reach out for help. Find a therapist, talk to a support person, contact anyone. You deserve support. And all symptoms are treatable, you just need to reach out. Repost @kateborsato

23.01.2022 Stop making health care hierarchy where the woman is not at the top. Seek advice, get educated, trust your intuition because you have the power. The birthing person has the power. 22.01.2022 Placenta magic off to another beautiful mama today. When covid-19 started I prepared for a huge down turn in bookings. I was super surprised to find over the last few months I have had the same if not more bookings. I have been thinking and feel that in the current climate so much support is being taken away from new mama's. They don't have all the people they want in labor, siblings can not visit hospitals, family and friends can not visit the new family. It is heartb...reaking. However my booking have increased. The feedback I'm getting is placenta encapsulation is a way to support mama's where most of the usual supports have been taken away. I am. 17.01.2022 Kissing your baby changes your breast milk. Did you know that the undeniable urge to cover your baby in kisses serves a biological purpose? When a mother kisses her baby, she samples the pathogens on baby’s face, which then travel to mom’s lymphatic system. 17.01.2022 Dates have been used around the world for centuries as a natural approach to preparation for labor. Several studies now support their effectiveness. Though we dont know exactly why, they do have an impact on the start and progress of labor - likely due to an impact on the hormone oxytocin which helps labor start and progress effectively. A 2011 study found that women who ate dates starting at 36 weeks were: Significantly more dilated when they got to the hospital Ha...d a significantly higher rate of intact membranes Were significantly more likely to go into labor spontaneously (i.e. without induction) And had nearly half the length of first stage of labor A 2014 study found that women who ate dates from 37 weeks on had: Greater cervical dilatation at admission Higher success rates of labor induction when needed A 2017 study concluded that all the above was accurate and yet another study found that eating dates in pregnancy led to less bleeding immediately after birth. Any type of dates work! The dose is about 2.5 ounces of dates ( ~6 to 8 small dates or ~4 larger dates) daily, starting at 36 or 37 weeks and until labor begins. I love eating them plain, but you can include them in my herbal bliss bites (recipe on my IGTV), use them to sweeten cashew or almond milk, or include them chopped in yogurt or oatmeal. Amazingly, they also havent been shown to be a problem for blood sugar. Did you use dates to prep for your labor? Do you know a pregnant mama who is prepping for labor? 16.01.2022 COVID-19 UPDATE: New rules will apply to expectant mothers, their partners and support people in Victorian hospitals, Health Minister Jenny Mikakos has announced today. An expectant mother will be able to have her partner or support person with her for the labour and birth.... After the birth, however, the woman's partner or support person will only be allowed to stay with her for two hours. We are thinking of expectant parents in Victoria who are, or will be, affected by these changes over the coming weeks. We are here for you. This is hard and heartbreaking. It's OK to feel sad, angry and anxious. You're not alone. If you're struggling, please reach out - we can help link you to the support you need during this time. ** Please also check back for updates - we are looking into this and seeking further clarification. 15.01.2022 #Repost @birthintobeing Very disappointed in @ranzcog who have made a recommendation to restrict the use of water in Birth. Being baths or showers, during and after birth. Now as we all know, water facilitates the level of relaxation required to let go, and give birth with ease. And there is NO EVIDENCE that the C virus is transmitted thru water. They say that they value their collaboration with the @midwives_acm however there was none of that before issuing... this official recommendation. Nor any community consultation, with the birthing families who have actually identified the restrictions placed upon their health care during the pandemic as being a major cause of stress and worry. All counterproductive to the birth outcomes desired. What we are seeing is an opportunist removal of more of the rights of women and families in Birth. This is bullshit - and whilst its all been said - I thoroughly recommend you head on over to the @ranzcog Insta page and let them know how you feel about this non evidence based recommendation, and the removal of womens rights in birth.... Personally, it makes me sick knowing that government bodies in democratic countries, including our lucky one, are making the most of the chaos, taking the opportunity to push their own agendas, while we are all so stressed out and worries on so many fronts. 13.01.2022 COVID-19 update. From the health minister Throughout this pandemic weve always relied on the advice of medical experts and we wont change that now. That is why weve had to make the tough decision to introduce further visitation restrictions to healthcare and aged care settings.... The Chief Health Officer in consultation with Safer Care Victoria and clinical experts have recommended changes to Victorian hospital visitor policies to help prevent coronavirus transmission in hospitals and provide a safer environment for some of our most vulnerable Victorians, like new mums and bubs. For maternity visits, this means a partner or support person of a pregnant woman can attend the labour and birth for as long as required and they can stay after the birth for as long as required. A partner or support person can then visit once per day for a maximum of two hours every subsequent day the mother is in hospital care. The two hour limit has been in place throughout the coronavirus restrictions. The only change is that now there can only be one instead of two visitors. In recent weeks, many health services have set stricter visitor policies of their own, including in some cases allowing no visits at all by partners of women post birth and no visitors at all in other circumstances. These recommendations have been reiterated to hospitals to ensure consistency. ... Thank yall for fighting for this yesterday. While it's not perfect it is such an improvement! Having the support person able to stay for as long as necessary means mama's are not going to be left bleeding, tired and alone. This means babies will get to bond with their dads. It means midwife's wil have less to do and be able to focus on their job. Yesterday so many people signed petitions, call and wrote to their local member and made noise! 08.01.2022 "If you don't let me perform a VE on you, we will not allow you to get into the birth pool." . Because there is a policy that a vaginal exam must be performed before the labouring woman can access warm water, as a coping measure. . Because a midwife may be censured for negligence, if she does not conform to the policy. and make the "patient" comply. ... . So you tell me. How is this not coercion? . Repost @michellepalasia . "I recently had an interesting experience with someone commenting on one of my posts and immediately after, a quote came through my feed that resonated perfectly, If your idea of supporting women is dismissing their lived experiences, you dont support women. ~ @mama_wilder Let me recap...my post was explaining an incident that I had witnessed, where my client was in the shower in well established labour. The midwife on duty had requested several times for my client to consent to a vaginal exam, which my client declined each time. The team leader midwife then came in, got down to eye level with my client (who was squatting) and threatened that unless she consented to a vaginal exam, she wouldnt be allowed to get in to the tub...knowing full well that birthing in the tub was part of my clients birth plan, as was NO vaginal exams. This happened...to this birthing woman and directly in front of me. The comment that came through was: Midwives dont threaten they inform the best process for the mums and babies health. This, is dismissing a womans lived experience. This, is labelling me a liar. This, is gaslighting. This, is coming from a place of ignorance. This, is glorifying threatening behaviour, fear mongering and coercion. This, is why so many women dont share their traumatic birth stories. When I share stories, theyre either lived experiences that Ive witnessed or lived experiences that have been shared with me. I know sometimes what I share can seem unbelievable but trust me when I say, I dont make this shit up. 07.01.2022 Seven reasons to breastfeed a toddler. Nutritional boost it can give a toddler, especially a picky one. In fact, experts believe that the composition of breast milk changes to adapt to a toddlers nutritional needs. Protection from illness. Your milk will continue to enhance your toddlers immune system so that hes less prone to colds, ear infections, allergies, and other common ailments. And even if he does get sick, nursing will help to comfort him. In fact, breast mi...lk may be the only thing he can keep down on an upset tummy. A healthier future. Research has shown that breastfed babies and toddlers enjoy all sorts of health perks when they grow up, including lower blood pressure and lower cholesterol. Theyre also less likely to be overweight or obese, and to develop type-2 diabetes. A brain boost. Though the research isn't conclusive, some studies have found that the longer and more frequently a toddler breastfeeds, the smarter hes likely to be thanks to the omega-3 fatty acids, or DHA, that are unique to breast milk. Toddler independence Rather than making him clingy, your toddler will be more comfortable exploring on his own when he knows that he always has the safety of your breast to return to. Comfort. Like a dummy or a lovey, the breast can help to calm an upset toddler or make a boo-boo feel better. Quiet time. Toddlers have important work to do! Theyre exploring, building new skills, figuring out all sorts of things about the world. And like any worker, they sometimes need a break. 02.01.2022 #Repost @clementine_ford CN: birth trauma . #Lewkdown: BOLD LIP... . If you follow me, you know I talk A LOT about birth trauma and the physical injuries some people sustain in childbirth. You know, good dinner party conversation! . Except it *should* be considered good dinner party conversation, or at least important dinner party conversation. Theres too much silence, shame and secrecy around the experience of birth, and it compounds trauma. . According to the Australasian Birth Trauma Org (@birthtrauma.org.au), birth trauma affects 1 in 3 birth parents. An estimated 10-20% of all first time birth parents may experience an irreversible birth injury. Thats between 15,000-30,000 birth parents EVERY YEAR. These injuries can range from prolapse to nerve damage to incontinence to complete pelvic floor avulsion (which is when the pelvic floor muscle tears away from the bone). . It is frankly an OUTRAGE that this conversation isnt being screamed across the country. My personal view is that we need a royal commission into birth trauma and obstetric harm, which isnt to say that there arent incredible people delivering natal care all over the country. But there is a lot of failure too, and it results in traumatised birth parents who are left to just get on with things because all that matters is a healthy baby. . Ive signed up to the ABTAs fundraising walk to raise funds for their essential peer-2-peer support service for new mothers experiencing birth injuries or birth trauma.
