25.01.2022 Educator Saly read the book The Things I love About Me to the children. Saly and the children enjoyed their conversations and interactions about the book. As the book was about the rabbit loving its little fingers, wiggly toes, fluffy ears and twitchy nose, the children also enjoyed pointing out what parts of their body they love. I love my nose!, Lavinia said. I love my ears!, Jordan said. The children compared the things they love from the rabbit character in the book. Each child showed enthusiasm and demonstrated a sense of pride of who he/she was. Saly and the children discussed how wonderful they all are and they should feel proud of what and who we all are.
25.01.2022 Today our group of Kinder children were delighted to be able to participate in the Laurimar Primarys ZOOM session, Get to know Laurimar Primary School. Today was focused on the Arts and Music and is a great opportunity for the children to familiarise themselves with the school and see that it is a fun, safe place to learn. In ordinary times, the children would have been doing these sessions at the school. With our current Covid restrictions, it is amazing that they are still able to participate. It was also a wonderful opportunity for the children to see their current Kinder friends who are at home.
25.01.2022 Our children in Toddler A have recently been investigating all things ocean related! The children have previously made their own aquarium using recycled cardboard boxes, so to enhance this interest they decided to go fishing! They used blue sand as water, a number of sea creatures, paperclips and magnets to create their fishing environment. Many conversations were had throughout, including what to do with the fish that they caught. All children thought that cooking their fish for lunch was the best option. Imaginative exploration provides an opportunity for children to practise and develop their language and social skills, simply by being with and talking to other children.
24.01.2022 For this weeks National Science Week celebration, Educator Rachel introduced to the children in Toddler A & Toddler B, an experiment with baking soda and vinegar. By adding colour to the vinegar and putting it in a syringe, Rachel allowed the children to add the vinegar to the baking soda to see the reaction when they came into contact with each other. This is an interesting and safe chemical reaction experiment for children. The childrens facial expressions were priceless especially when seeing the lava effect. This is a great science experiment you all can do at home with your children.
23.01.2022 This week marks National Science Week! The theme this year is Deep Blue: Innovations for the Future of our Oceans. To introduce this theme to our Nursery and Infants A children, our educators offered the children clear hair gel and blue dye to create their own ocean with. Sea animals were included too, with educators encouraging the children to use their verbal language skills and name each one they recognised. The children were very intrigued with the textures they felt and spent time observing the gel on their hands.
23.01.2022 Last week our kinder children discussed the elderly and how they must be feeling very lonely and sad because of the effects of Coronavirus. We discussed what we could do to help. The children quickly got to work to create these beautiful pieces of art to cheer up the older members of our community. We sent a package to 2 aged care facilities, one of them being Marion House where Ashlee's mum works. This week we were thrilled to find out that all the Kinder children's hard wor...k had paid off - we received this photo with the sisters of Marion house with big smiles on their faces as they opened up their works of art- the residents even promised to write back to us! Talking openly about feelings and teaching children empathy is a great tool that children will use for the rest of their lives - it feels great to spread smiles within our community.
23.01.2022 Between this small group of educators there is 65 years of combined experience in the Early Childhood Education industry. A whopping 10 years working alongside one-another and this is just a small fraction of our educating team at LCC! Being the original Early Learning facility in Doreen may mean that our building isn't so sparkly and new anymore, but it also means our Centre pedagogy, our Philosophy and our policies and procedures are embedded into our daily practice. Our l...ong-standing staff team work like a well-oiled-machine, together with our community of families to create an atmosphere that is warm, heart-filled and rich with learning opportunities. Our Centre is now securing bookings for 2021 - book a tour to see why we continue to set the benchmark in early education in Doreen. 9717-3741 [email protected]
22.01.2022 With graduation and transition to prep drawing nearer, our kinder groups have been fully immersed in the Little Flyers School Readiness Program. Lunchbox week is just one of the many events we organise to help the children to prepare for the many new tasks they may encounter. Kids on Collins supply the children with 5 meals per day including a hot evening meal so our kinder group do not have a lot of experience with packed lunches. Lunchbox week offers children the opportunity to prepare their own lunches using a variety of ingredients then enjoy their packed snack at lunch time. The children loved taking responsibility for their own nutrition and being a part of a process they will become very familiar with as enter the next phase of their schooling.
21.01.2022 Another month and another morale boosting moment to share with all of you. Our lovely educator Kelly was the volunteer Morale Officer for November and she organised a special sweet treat in the form of a handmade Thank you cookie. Kelly also included a little candle and a short saying about the special work educators do. Thank you to our amazing team, for the love and care you put into your work every single day.
21.01.2022 Today marks the annual National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Childrens Day. Childrens Day was first held 30 years ago in 1988. It was started was because there were many Aboriginal children in orphanages and institutions who did not know their birthday, so Childrens Day was set aside each year to celebrate the birthday of these children. The day was used to give Aboriginal children confidence and make them feel included. Today we celebrate this day a bit differen...tly and use it as an opportunity to show our support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, as well as learn about the crucial impact that culture, family and community play in the life of every Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child. The children in our Infants room created some beautiful wooden pendants. The children in the Kindergarten, 3year od kinder and Pre-Kinder furthered their knowledge of First Peoples culture by listening to the Rainbow Serpent and Tiddilick the Frog Dreaming stories The Rainbow Serpent - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCuuRRrfOXo Tiddlick the frog - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0y3Ta5xcKV4
21.01.2022 As some children have struggled to understand whats happening around them, remote learning and zoom meetings have provided a little bit of consistency in their world by continuing to form those connection they once found when attending our service. Seeing their fellow peers and conversing with their favourite Educators has brought so much joy to many children over the past weeks. During this weeks Zoom session the Kinder 3 room participated in Coco the Butterfly Cosmic Yoga. As you can see the Educators had just as much fun as the children, performing each yoga pose.
19.01.2022 Educator Shivani planned an activity called "Fishing for the children. Shivani put plain blue paper onto the table which represented the water and pictures of colourful paper fish in a bowl for each of the children. Shivani then handed each child a straw. Shivani explained to the children that they would be picking up the fish by breathing deeply in through the straw, and releasing the fish in the water by relaxing and breathing out. The children were quite excited to try this out. They all followed breathing technique instructions very well and enjoyed catching fish through the straw. Once they finished the activity Shivani encouraged the children to count how many fish they had caught.
19.01.2022 Encouraging children to recycle is a way of teaching them about sustainability and looking after our environment. Pre-kinder have been using recycled materials to make bugs. The children used their imaginations and got creative to make different bugs. You can see a sense of satisfaction and pride in their faces while they work on their creations and when they see their bugs up on display.
18.01.2022 Building relationships with the children in our care is so important in order for them to feel safe, secure and supported in their learning environment. Isabelle gives such great cuddles, and quite often runs to Centre Director Bec from down the hallway, to express her happiness. We would like to wish all of our families who are remaining at home over the next six weeks, health and happiness. We very much look forward to having you all return, and to see all of the childrens smiling faces in our Centre soon.
17.01.2022 Diwali is one of our favourite annual celebrations as it means so much to so many of our families. This week, the children and educators wowed us in their beautifully coloured and detailed Ghagra, Choli and Saree. We were all treated to a delicious lunch of Pani Puri with mango delight and some traditional chai tea. The children enjoyed creating decorative Diya, Rangoli, and fireworks to symbolise this special festival of lights. Happy Diwali everyone!
15.01.2022 Learning experiences set up for the children based on their current interest of castles, engages the children, challenges them, excites them and keeps them motivated to participate in the program. Our Educators here at Laurimar Township know children learn best when they are curious and interested. We have high expectations of the children and work with them to co-construct knowledge through learning strategies such as play, inquiry, investigation and research.
15.01.2022 Today marks the first day of Spring! Everyone at Melbourne City is so happy that Winter is over, and to celebrate, our children spent their morning outside in the sunshine. Playing outside gives children the chance to explore their natural environment and have adventures with their friends. They can play games, test their physical limits, express themselves and build their self-confidence! On top of all of these, the children enjoyed eating their Vegetarian Lasagne in the sun.
14.01.2022 Its true what they say, not all superheros wear capes! Our educator and resident Centre decorator Lisa at Kids on Collins thought it was time our staff were represented as the super humans they are so she created a superhero display at reception. Each of our staff members have been transformed into a strong and powerful hero as a mark of respect and admiration for the amazing work they do every day. Thank you to our incredible team for always displaying courage, strength and compassion!
14.01.2022 When educators share reading experiences with children it provides opportunities for language and literacy learning. It also provides children with an opportunity to make meaning from text, enhance their fine motor skills and express their ideas. Oliver sat down with Hairy Maclary this morning and used his finger to scan the text. He was able to narrate the parts of the text that he recognised and understood, sounding out specific letters that he knew and even successfully reading some of the words. He was so proud of himself for giving it a go!
14.01.2022 Our children and families mean the world to us and we have dearly missed seeing them every day. In order to stay connected and offer educational support, we have been sending weekly Home Learning Programs tailored to each of our age groups. Our amazing families have been kindly sharing their childrens enjoyment of the learning programs and we are extremely appreciative of how dedicated so many families are to staying engaged with us. Families are the childs first teacher and they have seriously embraced this role over the last few months. We know how hard it must be to juggle work, life and home education and we will continue to offer the best support we can until we can all be reunited again.
13.01.2022 The arrival of Spring has brought a little more sunshine to our lives and has breathed new life to our rooftop playground at Kids On Collins. The leaves are turning green again and the flowers are beginning to bloom giving the children a host of new wonders to ponder and explore.. Our fantastic CBD location doesnt mean we have to sacrifice having a beautiful outdoor space to grow and learn in. From worm farms to veggie patches and slides to sand pits we really do have it all! Who would have imagined this peaceful world of learning could be perched high above iconic Collins Street!
13.01.2022 Early Childhood Educators aim to develop the social, emotional, cognitive and physical needs of the children in their care in order to build a solid and broad foundation for lifelong learning and wellbeing. Every year we celebrate Educator Appreciation Day to thank all of the incredible educators and staff for all of the fantastic work they do each and every day to nurture future citizens. Little Flyers wishes all Educators far and wide a very happy Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day.
11.01.2022 Projects offer progressive and meaningful ways for children to explore and learn about topics of interest. Our kinder groups have been partaking in an ongoing project about habitats and the latest area of focus was the African Grasslands and The Savannah. The children have been learning all about African wildlife and plant life with the Baobab tree being of particular interest. Through their investigations, the children discovered that a fully grown Baobab tree can contain up to 120,000 litres of water. Thats enough to fill 1,500 baths! Here we see some beautiful artistic representations of the childrens favourite Grassland learnings.
10.01.2022 Today in Kindergarten, Sophia decided to create a self-portrait and decorate her own frame. She remembered creating one at the start of the year and wanted to draw another one, as she now recognises all of the things she can now do all by herself. When reflecting on her first self-portrait at the start of the year, she noticed that she wasnt as good at drawing because I was only little!. Todays self-portrait included a bow in her hair and even had her wearing red lipstick! This experience allowed Sophia to develop a strong sense of self, as she reflected on the progress she has made throughout the year and shared these achievements with her educators.
10.01.2022 My Buddy During an open discussion about school transitions, the children in the Kindergarten room began a conversation about receiving a class buddy at their new schools. Together as a group they discussed the role of the buddy and decided they as individual children, would like to take on that role so the Kindergarten children invited our Pre-Kinder children to join them in their room environment. In small groups, the Kindergarten children welcomed their buddy into their classroom and completed a range of activities with them such as reading, drawing and exploring the Kindergarten room. The children were fantastic role models for their peers as they displayed kindness for their new friends.
10.01.2022 This week, our Kindergarten and 3 Year Old Kinder children participated in their first Zoom catch up! The children in both rooms were so excited to see their friends that they spent much of the meeting chatting and catching up. It was wonderful to see our families who are at home during the current lockdown period! This is just one of the ways we are continuing to support and foster our relationships with families even when they are not attending our Centre. Thank you to the families who participated in our Zoom catch up, we miss you all and cant wait to catch up again next week!
10.01.2022 Toddlers here are learning about friendships, they are starting to understand their emotions. Children are mainly learning to communicate with their peers and making friendships. Play is important for a toddlers cognitive development. At this age children are experimenting and problem solving in every play experience. Children have the ability to communicate and make lasting memories. Children learn to be independent and great thinkers with great imagination. Play is one of the main ways that your child explores the world around them.
09.01.2022 Take a look at this image, what do you see? You may see two adorable children playing with blocks but our educators recognise this as so much more. This moment created a wealth of opportunities for learning and development for Rex and Freya. This block play experience not only supports coordination and fine motor skills but has countless cognitive and social benefits. These images show co-operation, concentration and turn taking in action and displays positive reciprocal interactions between two young toddlers. Our educators are trained to recognise every little opportunity for learning and they understand how something as seemingly simple as building a block tower can be transformed into so much more!
09.01.2022 The weather was so amazing today that the Kindergarten children have decided they would like to have their lunch outside. Everyone has worked together to set up a dining area on our Level 4 playground and then chosen their seats ready for lunch. When asked why they were enjoying eating their lunch outside, Zoe responded with because the sun is beautiful! and the other children all agreed. Dining al fresco is a fantastic way for the children to continue to enjoy the fresh air and warm weather without having to come inside for lunch.
08.01.2022 We will, we will, Rock You!! Its Rock n Roll Wednesday here at Laurimar Township. Within our Centre we have a large number of Children and Educators who love music and dance. Today was a chance for those who wanted to, to dress up as a Rock Star, listen to some music and bust out some moves.
08.01.2022 Staying connected to those we have special bonds with is very important, more so now than ever. During Stage 4 restrictions the children in our three and four year old Kinder groups have been missing their friends who are unable to attend the Centre each day. The educators found a solution to this problem Zoom meetings! This week each group of children with their educators connected with their friends who are currently SFH (schooling from home). The children at home and in class were given work to prepare for the meetings, many different topics were discussed how everyone was feeling, positive affirmations, story time, using the interactive screen to research sea creatures and art projects. Using technology is an additional way to ensure that the children develop their communication skills and continue to be effective communicators.
07.01.2022 Educator Rachel initiated the tie dye activity with the children. The children gathered around Rachel to watch the process of tie dying. Through the process, there were many conversations and discussions about colours. With every step, the children became more and more interested and began to ask questions. They demonstrated enthusiasm by showing their eagerness to have a turn in mixing and pouring dye onto the paper towels, which they tied in different corners using rubber bands. As the paper absorbed the dye colouring, the children were amazed how quickly it spread through the paper towel. A little later, Rachel and the children gathered again to investigate the outcome of the tie dye activity. The paper towels that were used for the tie dying had became colourful with different patterns of bright rainbow colours.
07.01.2022 Many of our families celebrated Diwali over the weekend. It is a wonderful celebration which means Festival of Lights and recognises new beginnings. Today some of the children participated in making Rangoli, which is a traditional Indian art form. This was done using coloured sand and a variety of templates to create a beautiful pattern for the children, educators and families to admire and appreciate.
06.01.2022 The children are thrilled when Monika announced she will be doing a Yoga session with them. Monika promotes calmness and tranquillity. Today Monika took a Yoga class with the Pre Kinder and 3 year old Kinder and with the Kindergarten children. They started the morning by discussing if the children had any fears about Coronavirus. To help children express how they felt, Monika placed cards on the floor with faces of different emotions. The children were able to discuss and com...municate how they felt about the pandemic and the conversation flowed freely. After the discussion Monika went on to doing her Yoga technique with the children. Yoga is a way of helping release any anxiety. The children practised some postures, Monika also encouraged the children to chant a few positive words such as We are confident We are strong and brave this helps children affirm a healthy and positive mind set. Monika then did some breathing and relaxation Yoga. We are very fortunate to have Educator Monika as our Yoga Guru. See more
06.01.2022 Children learn from experiences and what they observe in the world. Engaging in imaginary role play provides the children with opportunities to practise negotiating skills like turn taking and sharing ideas. Whilst washing the baby dolls today they are learning to show empathy and care for others and also have an enjoyable time playing together with water.
04.01.2022 Today would have been the first day of Bush Kinder at Eltham North Child Care and although the excursion was cancelled due to Government and Council guide lines, the Kindergarten educators decided to host Bush Kinder in our own playground! The educators worked hard to collect natural resources from the Nillumbik area including tree branches and rocks while many parents donated materials to add to the program as well. When the children arrived they donned their gumboots, rain jackets and waterproof pants and explored the areas set up in their playground. They built a cubby from tree branches, splashed in muddy puddles and made a massive happy mess! Kindergarten cannot wait to do it again!!
03.01.2022 Our 3 Year old Kinder children have been busy building their independence. Recently they have started to take charge of making their own beds before rest time. They have taken to this challenge well and are quickly learning the easiest way to get the fitted sheets to stay on their beds. Each time they make their own beds both their abilities and confidence grow and they love nothing more than to show off to their educators and peers how successful they are! Well done 3 Year old Kinder!
02.01.2022 Origami - paper bird finger puppet! Today the children were excited as they saw educator Sally plan a special activity with a variety of coloured paper. The children slowly gathered around the table one by one and sat down. Sally was asking each child what colour paper they wanted to choose. Sally explained she was about to show them a craft and explained all about origami. The children listened and waited patiently as they watched Sally demonstrate what to do with the paper. The children began to create their own interpretation of the origami birds and butterflies with enthusiasm. What an amazing craft and the end product was just as amazing.
01.01.2022 This year our 4 year old kindergarten room has implemented ‘drawing books’. The educators noted that the children were going through a lot of paper for their drawing and much of the time, these special drawings got left behind or lost at the bottom of their bags As a solution, the educators gave each child a book for their drawing a more sustainable use of paper, plus the distance travelled in each child’s journey is very evident as you turn each page. This week the e...ducators came across this beautiful portrait by Flynn, of his friend Rachael. That’s her singing he said proudly and the love hearts are because she makes me happy when she sings We are so proud of our kinder children’s fine-motor development, as well as their ability to show care, empathy and respect and to openly talk about their feelings all very important skills for starting their school journey in 2021.
