24.01.2022 Today is World Teachers' Day, where we pay tribute to the role teachers play in the development of our lives. This is especially important in a year where teachers have experienced many new challenges and gone truly above and beyond in engaging students. Our team of educators at our Hester Hornbrook Academy - including Michelle, Karin, Celeste and Linus, pictured - give at-risk young people the chance to get the education they deserve no matter what, and their work ensures that these young people go on to to lead a positive future, their way. 23.01.2022 In-line with this years #RUOKDay theme #theresmoretosay Jessica (our Youth Action Group Leader & Frontyard Advisory Committee Member) discusses how to engage with a peer who says, No, Im not OK. "I believe that it is important to know how to continue a conversation in this case, and I do this by suggesting services that might be of help. "While the person seeks for services, it is important for me to support the person, and I feel the best way to do this is to make them... feel listened to. It is all about ensuring that the person does not feel isolated while waiting for professional help." Reach out to your friends and loved ones, check in, have a conversation. learn what to say after #RUOK so you can keep the conversation going when someone says theyre not OK: http://ruok.org.au/how-to-ask
23.01.2022 Keeping the conversation going after asking, R U OK? is so important. Jessica (our Youth Action Group Leader), shares some tips for keeping the conversation going. "I tell them that if they need anything right now, like a phone call or to catch up (out of lock-down), then I am available. Organising a catch up is something to look forward to that we can plan together. "I make sure to mention professional mental health services, both in person and online resources, and l...et them know that talking to a GP can be a good way to start the sometimes daunting journey of talking to someone professionally. I check in later to make sure that they are taking care of themselves and can reach out to services if they need them. "Letting them know that I am available in the future if they want to talk about mental health further, and that how they are feeling is valid, is a good way to make them feel comfortable talking about what they are going through." This #RUOKDay and #WorldSuicidePreventionDay reach out to your friends and loved ones, check in, have a conversation. learn what to say after #RUOK so you can keep the conversation going when someone says theyre not OK: http://ruok.org.au/how-to-ask #theresmoretosay
23.01.2022 Young people experiencing homelessness want what we all want a stable place to get their life back on track; to cook for their kids, to sleep in peace, to be safe from violence and to stay healthy. We need to build enough housing to ensure all Victorians have a home. #HW2020
22.01.2022 This week marks the beginning of @AntiPovertyWeek #APW2020. The coronavirus supplement has provided a much-needed support for families. We can never go back to $40 a day & must #RaiseTheRateForGood. We encourage you to show your support by visiting https://raisetherate.org.au
21.01.2022 Poverty puts pressure on people it’s constant and strong. If the pressure builds up, people can be pushed into homelessness. We can relieve the pressure on people’s lives by creating affordable housing and helping people get decent jobs. #RaiseTheRate #APW2020 https://raisetherate.org.au/
21.01.2022 Jacob Gamble is a young person from our Youth Action Group and on #RUOKAYDay he reflects on the role we can all play to help someone navigate lifes ups and downs #theresmoretosay "We need to normalise checking up on our friends, family, and loved ones. Dont be afraid to ask how is your mental health? in your everyday conversations. "And dont shy away from being honest. Australians, particularly men, have a tendency to gloss over uncomfortable conversations. But once we... break through the stigma, having chats about mental health can be very productive and fulfilling. "Particularly during Stage 4 Lockdown, we all need to be maintaining that dialogue with each other. When talking about mental health with a friend, I always find it helpful." Jacobs three step plan to keep the conversation going: Discuss coping strategies that weve used Hold each other accountable to breaking out of bad habits or negative patterns of though, Or simply being there to listen can make a world of difference. Reach out to your friends and loved ones, check in, have a conversation. 19.01.2022 The LGBTQIA+ community are at a higher risk of experiencing youth homelessness, and often encounter discrimination when seeking support. A report by the Gay and Lesbian Foundation of Australia documented that individuals who identified were more than twice as likely to have experienced homelessness than their heterosexual counterparts. In episode 2 of MCMs Their Journey Home podcast series, we discuss how homelessness intersects with LGBTQIA+ rights in Melbourne,... from the perspective of a young person with lived experience. 17.01.2022 MCM knows that young people can change the world and they are at the core of what we do. MCM is committed to advocating and empowering our rainbow young people to b...e proud of who they are. 16.01.2022 "When COVID-19 emerged, we feared it would disrupt our service significantly. We were all thrown into the unknown and had to adapt quickly. 12.01.2022 While many of us will be having our holidays, whether at home or outdoors, young people experiencing homelessness won't have anywhere to enjoy their holidays with families. The ability to live in a safe, comfortable environment is not a luxury, it’s a right. ... Email the Federal Government and tell them they invest more in social housing to ensure all Australians, young and old have a place to call home. 04.01.2022 Maya (our Youth Action Group Leader) gives her take on what to say after R U OK? "I think the best place to start after opening the conversation is to listen to the person. Everyone tends to say they feel ok, whether they feel awesome or terrible. Its important to express how you feel, even if its hard to do that. And in acknowledging the courage it takes to admit youre not ok is important to; ask them if they want to talk about it, provide them with a safe space and g...ive them support. "The problems will eventually flow out, particularly if they have been built up over a long time, as it is most times. My mum always says we have one mouth and two ears for a reason. "Its important to listen before we speak. In this case, sometimes all someone needs is for them to be heard. That in itself has a lot of power."
