24.01.2022 This is a huge improvement. Thanks City of Melbourne!

24.01.2022 Many thanks to all Moreland Councillors, who voted unanimously on Wednesday evening to support; - $1.7 million extra funding for cycling and walking paths in response to Covid19 - several pop-up separated bike lanes on Boundary Rd, Albion St (between Upfield Shared User Path to LXRP detours), Dawson St (Upfield Shared Path to Brunswick Secondary College), and Northumberland Rd (Pascoe Vale) ... - trials on removal of car parking to create space for separated bicycle infrastructure and - councils ten year plan for cycling infrastructure. Thanks also to all the council officers who worked to put these together.

23.01.2022 Theres been a noticeable increase in people riding bikes, as people avoid using public transport due to the virus situation. But for new riders, using Google maps for route selection is problematic...Google maps has been known to direct cyclists onto freeways, for example. Enter Philip Mallis. ... Hes a transport planner and regular bike rider, with extensive knowledge of Melbourne. His mapping experience is an amazing resource, and hes offering to assist new riders by plotting a personalised route with turn-by-turn directions, at no charge. What a champion :) This is the spirit that will help get us all through these difficult times. If you need help route planning on your bike, get in touch: https://philipmallis.com//offer-of-help-journey-planning/

23.01.2022 Pascoe Vale cyclists have been campaigning for separated bike lanes on Cumberland Rd for many years, and it was cause for celebration when Labor promised to do so in the 2018/19 state budget. But Lizzie Blandthorn made an announcement late on Friday, that we will get the Cumberland Bike "Link"...it just wont be on Cumberland Rd. Huh?... Thats not what the state government promised. Lizzies made an absurd attempt to spin this as a good thing, which in itself is an insult to her constituents. Moreland BUG are leading the community response to this and you can read more here. Please take a few minutes to write to Lizzie about her broken promise. ([email protected]) https://mailchi.mp//cumberland-road-pascoe-vale-election-p

22.01.2022 Jaala Pulford wants to encourage people to keep walking and cycling, after building some good habits during the pandemic. The problem is, she hasnt actually done anything practical to help make that a reality. While weve seen other cities around the world rapidly installing pop up bike lanes and widening footpaths, the Victorian government has done absolutely nothing. Its all lip service if its not backed up by investment and delivery on projects. Do you have some ideas f...or what Jaala Pulford and the Dan Andrews government could do to improve walking and cycling safety and amenity? Maybe a protected bike lane on Sydney Rd...? Please take a few minutes to write to them and make your suggestions. Its time to tell them that lip service doesnt cut it. [email protected] [email protected] (cc your local MP as well)

21.01.2022 Another cowards run, in Northcote on 24 March. If you saw anything or if you may have video footage that might help, please contact police. Wishing this rider a speedy recovery.

21.01.2022 Good news to start the long weekend.

21.01.2022 Pinched from Jannette Sadik-Khan

20.01.2022 Heads up for users of the Ring Rd trail.

19.01.2022 COVID-19 has been rubbish in so many ways, but it's had a remarkable effect on people's cycling habits. It feels like we’re seeing a reframing of cycling, and it’s being helped by the acceleration of infrastructure, like cycle lanes, and the realisation that cycling is a great way to get around https://www.theage.com.au//when-rugby-got-cancelled-lily-t?

18.01.2022 What are the five biggest killers on our roads? Spoiler alert: it's not cyclists

18.01.2022 Do you ride on Walmer St Bridge? Want to see "Cyclists Dismount" signs installed? No?... Please read this, and lodge an objection.

18.01.2022 Were you anywhere near Swanston St / Cornell Place in Carlton this afternoon? If you saw the car that hit Jonah, or if you may have video or photos that might help, please get in touch with him.

18.01.2022 "Stick to the bike paths", they say. It seems were not safe there either. How does someone get so lost? How did he even get here?... Bike riders and walkers alike are put at risk by idiotic driver behaviour like this. Youre not even safe on off-road paths... 17.01.2022 Bicycle Network are calling for pop up bike lanes, which could be achieved within days, as well as longer term planning for permanent bike lanes. COVID-19 has required people to find new ways to get around and to exercise. The current boom in cycling numbers will not disappear when restrictions ease. We have a once in a lifetime opportunity to make real changes to cycling safety. We need Jaala Pulford MP and Dan Andrews to step up and commit to building bike lanes as part of the infrastructure driven economic recovery plan.

17.01.2022 Finally! Minimum Passing Distance Legislation comes into effect in Victoria on Monday 26 April 2021. Thank you Ben Carroll MP for getting this done. It's been a long time coming. ... Now the real work begins: we need effective education and enforcement. We'll be watching closely to see how Victoria Police support this in practice. https://www.premier.vic.gov.au/safer-ways-share-victorian-r

17.01.2022 "How far away from my house can I ride my bike? How far away from my house can I power walk, jog, run? You should show common sense in satisfying your exercise requirements, and go the minimum time and minimum distance that achieve this in your circumstances." The latest guidelines on exercising arent 100% clear nor prescriptive for cycling, but the intent is clear: exercise as close to home as you can, and use your common sense.

17.01.2022 Some useful advice here about cycling in a COVID-19 world. Astonishing stats are coming out of other cities like New York, where cycling has increased by over 50% since the epidemic began. People are seeking alternatives to crowded public transport and cycling is a natural fit. In fact, New York is urgently reallocating road space to build new bike lanes to accommodate this shift. ... Its quite likely well see similar increases here in Melbourne in coming weeks. With increased cycling numbers, of course it is incumbent on Jaala Pulford MP and Dan Andrews, with VicRoads and local councils, to make urgent safety changes to support the expected uptick in cycling. The two deaths today of cyclists killed by truck drivers, coming after the death of a schoolboy who was hit by a truck last week, brings the situation into sharp relief. Along with all the other COVID-19 preparations that the Victorian Government is rightly making, road safety for our most vulnerable must be part of the agenda, and fast. Lives depend on it. 16.01.2022 Do you ride through Prahran? Please take a few minutes to fill out this cycling safety survey! https://www.facebook.com/424862620880565/posts/3078831742150293/

16.01.2022 Awful news this afternoon, with yet another cowards run leaving a cyclist in critical condition. If you have any information or may have dashcam footage thats relevant, please contact police. Wishing the rider a full and speedy recovery. "Police have been told the cyclist was struck by a silver Holden Astra hatch with partial registration WXE about 1.10pm on Langhorne Road near the intersection of the Princes Freeway.... The driver of the vehicle did not stop to render assistance and fled westbound on the Princes Highway. The cyclist, a 46-year-old Dandenong North, man was transported to hospital where he remains with critical injuries."

15.01.2022 I am thrilled to announce that I have been voted in to the Bicycle Network board. Thank you to everyone who voted, and everyone who has supported me along the way. It is an honour to have this opportunity to make a difference for cycling safety. Congratulations also to Keir at Bicycle Network Board for his re-election.

15.01.2022 Wow! What a difference a little bit of concrete can make. Thank you City of Melbourne for following through and delivering your promised improvements for cycling safety. 500m of new protected bike lanes per week is an admirable goal.... Ben Carroll MP can we see state government action to match this, across the entire metropolitan area? While its great to see such progress by individual councils, a coordinated plan from the state government would go a long way to ensuring consistency across council jurisdictions, and closing the gaps on state-controlled roads.

14.01.2022 RIP Debbie Locco.

13.01.2022 Hmm. Another opportunity to educate folks in the comments, if you have a few minutes spare this evening.

12.01.2022 "So many cyclists are thoughtless with their clothing choice regarding visibility by motorists. What they dont understand is many motorists have less than perfect eyesight..." Let me put this as plainly as I can.... If your eyesight is insufficient to see something as large as a human being, you have a responsibility to hand in your license and stop driving. If you continue to drive, knowing that your eyesight is failing you, you are willfully endangering the lives of everyone around you, and you deserve contempt plus criminal charges if you do harm someone.

11.01.2022 Please have your say on Yarra Councils proposal to close Trennery Cres to motorised traffic. This would be a boon for cycling in the area, as it is currently a pretty dangerous spot.

11.01.2022 For those who use the Walmer St bridge in Abbotsford.

11.01.2022 Do you use the Ring Rd Trail? Heads up for a detour between Sydney Rd and Mahoney's Rd.

10.01.2022 I'm liking these visuals. Hopefully there's much more driver education coming. Don't read the comments though. There's the fairly predictable "the sky is falling" hyperbole from drivers who simply need to find their brake pedal and chill out a bit.

10.01.2022 Horrific news this evening, with yet another cowards run. When will Victoria get serious about driver standards, and punishments for the scum who fail to stop and render assistance? Our heartfelt condolences to the womans loved ones. We hope the driver is found and justice is served. Or will we see just another slap on the wrist? ... Enough is enough. If you may have dashcam / bike cam footage or any other information that might help identify the driver, please contact police.

10.01.2022 Good to see Yarra City Council continue the trial of separated bike lanes on Elizabeth St Richmond despite the usual push back regarding parking concerns. Get out there and try the lanes for yourself if you can. Let us know what you think!

10.01.2022 Moreland Council are about to decide how much money to spend on bike infrastructure for next year. Currently they spend $8.60 per resident, compared to Copenhagens $30/resident. Is this enough during a pandemic? Moreland BUG will be making a submission urging council to commit to doubling the cycling budget and committing to build specific, physically separated bike lanes immediately. Fill in the 5 minute survey. Community feedback will help strengthen the case. ... https://forms.gle/sQSvq672wbrTH7wy6

09.01.2022 Im starting to like our new Roads and Road Safety Minister

09.01.2022 Faaaar out. So glad to hear this 12yo bike rider escaped injury. But how terrifying is this picture?... We need better driver training and better truck cabin design, to drastically reduce blind spots in large vehicles.

08.01.2022 This is great news from City of Melbourne, with works from their 10 year plan being fast tracked for completion in the next two years. More of this please!

08.01.2022 Similar to cities like Auckland and Berlin, the City of Melbourne is considering temporarily removing car parks to make way for pop-up bike lanes and wider footpaths to maintain social distancing around the CBD. Would you like to see the same in your local area?

08.01.2022 Please add your voice to call for bike lanes on Sydney Rd.

06.01.2022 Now for some good news

05.01.2022 There have been reports of a tacking incident on the Kew Boulevard on Easter Monday (13 April 2020). 05.01.2022 Can you help? A bike lane installation in Preston West (Cramer St) promised by the previous Darebin Council is under threat from being voted down by current Cou...ncillors. Link below shows the history of the project, photos show what it looks like at the moment. We may have a chance to SAVE this project if people can show their support for it at this Monday's Council meeting. There is a fear that if this project gets canned by the current Council, then all other future bike lane projects in Darebin are at risk. DM me if you want to join a group of local bike lane/active transport supporters to discuss possible actions. If you, or anyone you know, lives or goes to school near Cramer St and would support safer cycling and pedestrian infrastructure, please get in touch with Council! https://www.yoursaydarebin.com.au/prestonactivitylink See more

04.01.2022 Very sad news today. "It is believed the driver of a truck travelling south-east along Mount Alexander Road turned left into Mooltan Street and struck a cyclist just before 6am." No further information as to the precise circumstances at this stage, and the rider has yet to be formally identified. Heartfelt condolences to the victims loved ones. ... https://www.theage.com.au//cyclist-killed-by-truck-in-melb

04.01.2022 'Given the overwhelming and positive feedback we received as part of the operation we will continue to conduct regular patrols and activities in the area to ensure both pedestrians and cyclists remain safe - Southbank Acting Senior Sergeant Brett Sidebottom.' Sounds like we can look forward to more police presence at Southbank. The mix of cyclists and pedestrians in this area is a problem. But it's a problem that requires an infrastructure solution to enable separation. Any...thing else is a futile attempt to treat the symptoms by punishing the users of a broken system. And I firmly believe that Victoria Police have more important things to spend their limited time and resources on.

03.01.2022 How has COVID-19 changed the way you move around the city? This survey is looking into the implications of COVID-19 for transport in Melbourne. Thought some of you might be interested in spending 5-minutes (and the chance to win $200): https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/KX32K8J The results will inform help city planners and local councils to help guide what steps they need to take to make to help people travel as lockdown eases.... The report will also be made available for free, and we can share it back to this group if people are interested.

03.01.2022 Wow! This bike lane was installed in response to increased cycling demand and physical distancing needs due to COVID-19. Radical, fast change is possible. It seems we simply lack the political will, here in Victoria. We could be making bold changes to key routes, like Sydney Rd, RIGHT NOW. ... Jaala Pulford MP Dan Andrews Bicycle Network

03.01.2022 I like this ad :) Share it far and wide!

02.01.2022 Thank you James for writing this letter. Look at that bike lane. Its just paint, and barely the width of your handlebars. There is zero margin for error, whether by the cyclist or an adjacent motorist. And driver behaviour must be addressed, urgently. Cutting across bike lanes late, failing to look properly, failing to indicate, aggression and impatience are all massive problems in our road culture.... Jaala Pulford MP

02.01.2022 Surely we could be doing this here too.

02.01.2022 "Yarra are proposing to make Wellington Street bike and pedestrian only for through traffic north of Johnston Street. Wellington St is one of the most dangerous roads in the city of Yarra for close passing, with 21% of passes less than one meter. Closing the road to through traffic for cars will improve cyclist safety massively in this area. Have a look at Streets Alive Yarras link here to see about the changes, and please see the comments on how to make a submission."... via Bike Melbourne

01.01.2022 It is with tremendous sadness that we share news of a second cyclist killed today by a truck driver. St Kilda Rd is one of the busiest cycling routes in the city, yet Dan Andrews and Jaala Pulford MP have dragged their feet on improving the pathetically narrow and dangerous bike lane. We are still years away from seeing the promised separated path up the middle of the road. Meanwhile, lives are at risk every single day and this death was a sad but predictable inevitability. ... Shame on our state government for its ongoing failure to prioritise human safety over the convenience of people driving deadly motor vehicles. https://www.police.vic.gov.au/cyclist-dies-following-st-kil
