25.01.2022 Welcoming our students back to the labs sparks joy. Mario, our preclinical coordinator at the Melbourne Dental School could not contain his happiness when our dentistry students returned last week (note his chuckles at the end ) Credit :: Mario Smith, Preclinical Coordinator at MDS.

23.01.2022 As we await updates from the school regarding further changes to clinical placements, seminars and lectures, here are some additional resources: https://www.unimelb.edu.au/coronavirus/update https://www.ada.org.au/covid19... We understand the difficult predicament this has placed on the school and that with any changes that may occur, you are likely to have questions. For now, we ask that you are patient while staff determine the best way forward. However, if you have any queries please pass them on to your class reps. We will continue to strive to represent our DDS and BOH students as best we can and voice concerns or suggestions to help reduce long term impacts on our studies. Lastly, we would like to thank the staff working tirelessly to ensure the safety of both clinicians and patients. Love, MDSS

17.01.2022 Dear MDS students, The DCD, DDS and BOH reps have had another meeting with Professor Sloan, Head of School, to discuss re-entry plans post COVID-19. Amidst the possibility of government restrictions easing next week, the school is working alongside DHSV and MDC to stagger the return of students. This is estimated to occur in mid June. With final year students being of highest priority, there will be an initial return of DDS4 and BOH3, following with DDS3 and BOH2 and the res...t of the year groups. Upon return to MDS, there will likely be a: 1. Short program on new changes to cross infection and infection control 2. Refresher course on PPE --> Then, a formative assessment of these new protocols to ensure safety within clinic 3. Refresher program in MOHTEC (broken up into groups to abide by social distancing) MOHTEC may be open from 8am-8pm however each group will not have class throughout the whole day Includes focusing on specialty areas more so impacted by level 2 restrictions such as Fixed Prosthodontics The purpose of this is to re-introduce us to the clinical environment and refresh our hand skills whilst we stagger back into our normal clinical routine. It is also hoped that with the easing of restrictions that there will be a proportionate increase in patient numbers. It has been discussed that upon return to RDHM and MDC, three clinics will be run per day, 8am 6pm. Webinars hosted by Prof Sloan and relevant course coordinators aim to be organised for DDS4 and BOH3 next week, with other year levels to follow in the coming weeks. Prof Sloan has been advocating on our behalf to the university regarding fee staggering & instalments. A contact on this matter will be passed along soon. There has been discussions around placing a ‘grades pending’ status on grades to be assessed at a more suitable time in order to allow a fairer student progression. However, at this stage nothing has been finalised. DCD postgraduate students in orthodontics, prosthodontics and endodontics are beginning their return on May 18th. General concerns regarding online assessments, mid-year holidays, content loading and WAM changes policies on year long subjects, were raised by representatives. Please continue to monitor your emails and familiarise yourself with the COVID-19 UniMelb page (https://www.unimelb.edu.au/coronavirus/update). If you find yourself in need of support, the University of Melbourne is still ‘open for business’ but operating in a different manner. MDS is building a Mental Health & Wellbeing team to support both students and staff. Please do not hesitate to reach out to the different streams of support if you require it.
