23.01.2022 LEPTOSPIROSIS ALERT TO ALL PET-PARENTS IN EASTERN MELBOURNE **Follow this post and share with other local pet-parents for more updated information as we find ou...t more.** **11th Nov Update: We are getting quite a few questions on vaccination. The answer is yes we do offer vaccination. At this stage, we are recommending it on a case by case basis. If you are interested to find out more, please call our hospital & emergency centre on: (03) 8595 6655 between 8am to 8pm.** In the last week we have had a confirmed diagnosis of Leptospira interrogans (italics) serovar Copenhageni in a dog living local to the Maroondah area. Although he and his family fought hard, sadly the dog was extremely unwell due to both liver and kidney failure and unable to be saved. We do not know of other confirmed cases in Eastern Melbourne, however, it is possible that the disease is being seen but not confirmed. ***Leptospirosis can cause severe illness in people, can be lethal in dogs and cats and infect many different mammals. *** Because of the severity of disease this bacteria causes, as well as its ability to spread between people and animals, all cases must be reported to the Department of Agriculture immediately. This bacteria is more commonly seen in the humid conditions of Northern Queensland, and quite rarely seen in the southern states. However, in the past few months, there has been a spike of cases confirmed in central Sydney and now the Bayswater and Maroondah area. At this stage, we have created a brief infographic to help you reduce the risk of exposure to your beloved pet. We sincerely hope we don’t see any more cases in the near future. Rest-assured we are surveilling the situation extremely carefully to make sure we keep your pets safe and healthy. 09.01.2022 Tip of the day Let's talk poop (I apologise to anyone who is trying to eat right now) Pictured below is a comparison of two healthy poops from the same ...dog - one from eating a balanced raw meal the other from eating good quality dry food Why is one significantly bigger than the other? The answer is lies in the amount of digestible and undigestable macronutrients A mix of fresh meat, bone and organs has a high water, nutrient and protein content. The canine digestive system is relatively short compared to a herbivores and has a significantly lower stomach pH, designed to break down protein and dissolve bone in a number of hours. The nutrients are absorbed from the digested meal and the result is a formed, firm but not hard stool. The amount that comes out is significantly less than the amount that went in In comparison, a meal of good quality dry food will usually have a carbohydrate content between 40% and 60% and also contain dried/extruded protein (including meat, meat meal, soy protein and/or pea protein), fibre, fats/oils, and fortified vitamins and minerals. The protein and fortified nutrients are absorbed during digestion as well as a small amount of carbohydrates. Dry food contains less than 6% moisture, leaving dogs on a dry food diet in a constant state of dehydration and requiring constant access to water. This water binds to the remaining I unused carbohydrates and fibre from the food, which passes straight through the digestive system and results in a stool with a high water content and strong offensive odour. The amount that comes out is comparable to the amount that went in Species appropriate feeding for dogs is feeding raw, balanced, high meat based diet rather than a diet high in carbohydrates.
