25.01.2022 Genealogical research and access to deceased records are a crucial aspect of understanding and connecting to our past. A core part of our role is to carefully maintain the records of millions of Victorians who have been buried or cremated at one of the 9 cemeteries under our care, including Melbourne General Cemetery. We are continuing to fulfil that important role and we are asking for your help while restrictions are in place. We ask that visitors refrain from attending any... of our offices to conduct genealogical research in person. There are still many options available to access assistance in your research, including: 1. Submit a records enquiry online at https://smct.org.au/deceased-search-form 2. Call Melbourne General Cemetery directly on (03) 8772 6196 3. Use our online Deceased Search tool at https://smct.org.au/deceased-search (for searches related to Springvale Botanical Cemetery, Bunurong Memorial Park and St Kilda Cemetery) For a full list of locations and contact details visit https://smct.org.au/locations

They can support us with knowledge and guidance as well as connecting us with loved ones through the sharing of a good story. On National Book Lovers Day, we asked the team at The Centre for Care and Wellbeing to provide some of their top book recommendations for dealing with grief and bereavement.

24.01.2022 Have you attended our Halloween Tours before? In previous years we would now be preparing for our Halloween Tours at Melbourne General Cemetery. These immersive tours provide a wonderful way to share the stories of the many historical and notable figures who are now laid to rest within the cemetery. Although we are unable to host our Halloween Tours this year, we look forward to sharing these historical stories with you for years to come.

23.01.2022 Celebrations and days of remembrance are bound to look a little different this year. Wherever you are this Father’s Day, take a moment to remember the wonderful men and father figures in your life. Those special men that for so many of us, played the role of our everyday heroes. Here are some ideas of ways that you can honour your everyday hero from near or far this Father’s Day.

22.01.2022 We have been honoured to host All Souls’ Day services annually as our community gather with family and friends. However, this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, we are sadly unable to host the services on our sites. While restrictions may have limited our on-site services, we encourage you to connect with a local parish community at this time to participate in an online All Souls Day service.

22.01.2022 Grief is challenging and whether you’ve experienced it a few times or you’re going through it for the first time, it requires space, time and support. We’ve made a selection from a diverse range of podcasts which all tackle the topic of grief and how to process it.

22.01.2022 Today is World Teachers’ Day and this year more than ever, we wanted to send out a huge thank you to all teachers around the world for their dedication and commitment to education. Tag a teacher in the comments and let them know you appreciate them and the special role they play.

21.01.2022 With the introduction of stage 4 restrictions for Metropolitan Melbourne, we encourage you to continue to adhere to Government directives. These changes help us... work together in reducing the number of people leaving their homes and moving around Victoria. We would like to assure you that our locations will remain open for the purpose of organising or attending a funeral, with up to up to 10 people able to attend funeral gatherings and burials. Our locations will also remain open to those who live within a 5km radius to exercise and purchase takeaway food and flowers. Our thoughts are with our community and those who are experiencing the pain of loss during such a difficult time. We are committed to supporting you during this time, and while our Centre for Care & Wellbeing has temporarily closed its doors, our team are continuing to provide the community with care and support via email [email protected] and phone (03) 8772 6111.

20.01.2022 Today we take a moment to remember all the wonderful fathers and father figures in our lives. Father’s Day this year whilst it may look different for many, still holds a unique place in our hearts. Some of us are lucky enough to be close by our nearest and dearest, and others are further apart. For some, our loved ones are no longer with us - at these times, we remember them. Earlier this week we were delighted to join with our community online as we spend time in reflection together, honouring our ‘every day heroes’.

It’s a question we may have asked many times over the course of our lives, but this phrase has gained ever-increasing meaning as mental health has risen in importance in our national conversation. R U OK Day offers a simple guide of what to do after the initial question has been asked and how to continue supporting those around you. Ask... Listen Encourage Action Check-in Remember, it’s ok to not be ok. Seeking out support and help can be a difficult first step, but with the support of our friends, family and colleagues all looking out for each other and being willing to start the conversation, the journey is made smoother.

To protect our employees and community, please note that we are also introducing temperature checked in our Customer Service areas. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this challenging time, our thoughts are with our Victorian community and with all those experiencing the pain of loss during such a difficult time.

12.01.2022 With this week being National Science week, it’s the perfect time to celebrate Pietro Paolo Giovanni Ernesto Baracchi (25 February 1851 23 July 1926) Australia’s first Italian Astronomer, laid to rest at Melbourne General Cemetery. Born in Florence, Italy, Baracchi studied mathematics and astronomy, with a degree in civil engineering. In 1876 Baracchi arrived in Melbourne where he began work as an assistant at the Melbourne Observatory. Later he was sent to Port Darwin wher...e he documented Australian longitudes and was in charge of the Great Melbourne Telescope, undertaking a review of the Southern Nebulae. Through enterprise and hard work, Baracchi became acting government astronomer in 1895 and to his displeasure became best known to the public as the official weather-forecaster for Victoria. His displeasure came about from his belief that ‘popular meteorology’ was not serious science and completely impractical (anyone who lives in Melbourne would understand how impractical meteorology can be!). In 1911, Baracchi established a small observatory on Mount Stromlo making observations of the sun, planets, stars and deep-sky objects, site-testing the location for suitability as the first Commonwealth Solar Observatory. We would also like to remind our community that those who do not live within a 25km radius of our locations can visit the resting place of loved ones for special ...occasions. At this time, funeral gatherings remain at a limit of up to 10 people in attendance, in addition to Funeral Director and support personnel. 04.01.2022 Each year on National Police Remembrance Day, Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust are honoured to partner with Victoria Police. 03.01.2022 Coffee - it's something that can symbolise many different things to so many of us. For some, pouring a fresh cup of coffee may be one of the first things we do in the morning. Symbolising a new day, full of fresh opportunities, a time to reset our mood and choose how we decide to step out into the day. For other, coffee can be a reminder of spending quality time in conversation amongst loved ones - something that many of us in Melbourne are craving. Today on International Coffee Day we encourage you to pour a cup of coffee, slow down and reflect on all the things you're grateful for. You could even arrange to call up a friend on video, sit down, chat, and enjoy a virtual coffee together.

02.01.2022 I would rather walk with a friend in the dark, than alone in the light. - Helen Keller Today on International Day of Friendship, we celebrate our closest and dearest friends. Those who are there for us during the darkest moments in our lives, who pick us up when we fall, offer a shoulder to cry on and make us laugh when we thought that might never be possible again. Even though we can't be physically close to our friends during this time, we can still encourage them, and let them know we care and are still here for them. Check-in with your friends and let them know you're thinking of them today.

02.01.2022 "You have power over your mind - not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength." - Marcus Aurelius What’s a positive affirmation or quote you’ve held onto during this time of slowing down and reflecting? Sharing positive, uplifting quotes and messages with one another, helps us keep positive and can be a welcome change for those who may be feeling down or overwhelmed.
