25.01.2022 A silver lining of COVID has been the increased use of telehealth. We’re pleased to announce that we have further upgraded our video consultation options and features with our new clinic at melbhandsurg.doxy.me. Video consultation is available to new, review and post operative patients where your surgeon has cleared your consult as being suitable for video consult. Our telehealth platform does not require you to download any software and you can test it out by checking in to our virtual waiting room at any time - we will only connect you with your surgeon if you have a scheduled appointment. If you have any questions please ask. There are many aspects of 2020 that we hope don’t get revisited in 2021, but telehealth is definitely here to stay!

25.01.2022 Part of our COVIDsafe approach involves using telehealth wherever it is a safe and appropriate way to consult with our patients. Our preferred approach is via videoconsultation, so that you can see and hear your surgeon. For many years we have required a doctor's referral before booking your appointment, so that we can identify and treat emergency conditions without delay. Now you might find that we also ask you to send us photographs of your hands, particularly if you are l...ooking to make an appointment regarding treatment of Dupuytren's contracture. These photographs allow us to determine whether your appointment can be conducted via telehealth, or whether you need to meet in person with Dr Tomlinson so that she can feel your hands as well as see them. Telehealth is very COVIDsafe and also allows you to maintain contact with your surgeon if you or we are required to isolate due to a cold or due to contact with a suspected or proven COVID19 positive individual. While there are still many conditions and circumstances where an in person consultation is required, we endeavour to offer you a telehealth consultation wherever it is appropriate to do so. We know that many of our patients are waiting for updated information about the resumption of elective surgery. Currently this looks to be some weeks away, although this is purely our guestimate. When we know more we will contact all of our affected patients to offer surgical dates, and to explain any requirements (such as pre-surgical COVID testing and self-isolation). We are still conducting rooms procedures, such as needle fasciotomy; Dr Tomlinson and her nurse wear masks and face shields during these procedures and we have multiple processes in place to minimise the risk of COVID transmission. The photo in this post details the process of consultation, procedure and follow up for needle fasciotomy under our COVIDsafe telehealth pathway. Not all patients are suitable to have their initial consultation via telehealth, as it is not always possible to assess the treatment options that are available to an individual based purely on photographs of their hands, but if you are able to provide us with photographs these will be viewed by Dr Tomlinson who will determine whether your appointment should be in person, or whether a telehealth appointment is possible. If you prefer an in person appointment to a telehealth appointment please let us know, we are happy to accommodate your preferences.

25.01.2022 Melbourne Hand Surgery has mechanisms to protect our patients and staff while we continue to provide healthcare services. All consultations are now conducted via telehealth (phone or videoconference), except where we have previously confirmed the requirement for an in-person physical examination or wound care management. Only emergency surgery is being conducted in hospitals for the foreseeable future, in keeping with Government directives. If our practice is unable to phys...ically open for business at any point in the coming weeks or months we will communicate this to existing scheduled patients via email and SMS (please do not attempt to reply other than with Y or N to an SMS, as the automated system does not facilitate this). Incoming telephone calls and receipt of voicemail messages may be temporarily affected by such a change. We will use this website banner to update you on changes to our practice and the availability of non-urgent procedures and surgery in the weeks and months ahead. Thank you for your understanding as our entire community works through these unprecedented and rapidly evolving times together.

17.01.2022 Melbourne Hand Surgery remains open under the Stage 4 restrictions. You do not need to live within 5km of our rooms to attend for care. However, for your safety and ours we are conducting consultations via telehealth wherever clinically appropriate. This will not only reduce the risk of person to person transmission of COVID19, it reduces the likelihood that our practice staff and surgeons will be required to close the practice and quarantine for two weeks, during which time ...we would be unable to provide face to face care to individuals - including surgery for trauma and emergency conditions. There are many healthcare workers across Melbourne who are in quarantine; our staff are well and we hope to keep things that way. Thank you for your understanding as we deliver care differently. Keeping apart keeps us together - and allows us to keep delivering face to face care to those who need it most.
