24.01.2022 I have had the pleasure of several massages from Brad. Brad is a well presented, intelligent and articulate guy who delivers a genuine therapeutic /relaxation massage tailored for your needs. It is very obvious he is well trained and experienced and always manages to locate any problems areas and adjusts the massage to these areas. I always look forward to these sessions as I know I am going to not only feel relaxed but also benefit from the work he performs. The added bonus is enjoying the massage in your own home and not enduring a stressful drive after the session. Mark.....Croydon. Thanks for the review Mark....much appreciated www.melbourneholistic.com.au

23.01.2022 SELF-ACCEPTANCE vs SELF-REJECTION We've all heard the common saying, "An attitude of gratitude" right? But how do we adopt such an appreciation when dealing with life's seemingly cruel blows, particularly where emotional, mental and physically debilitating problems are manifest. Within my practice, more often than not, clients present with ailments with the sole intention of "getting rid of" the; Anxiety, PTSD, Chronic Pain, Depression or (insert issue here). And who could b...lame them! Their effects cripple us and force us to live in ways we never wanted or dreamt of. But the body has its own innate wisdom toward self healing, so why isn't it doing its job in eradicating mental, emotional and physical distress? The short answer is; we get in its way. Within the first sessions of therapy, I learn about clients' attitudes toward their presenting problem. A common theme is that they just don't want it there and are even angry toward it. If we never wanted to sit in a therapy session for chronic illness again, we might learn to be kind to ourselves and start working with acceptance. Within acceptance, we can begin to listen, listen with curiosity, and develop a meaningful relationship with ourselves and our bodys' messages. It is the control of expected outcomes that keeps the pain cycle in place. I couldn't recommend the practice of meditation enough. This quiet time with self teaches us to let go and attune with our "inner world". True healing takes place when we bring the unconscious into consciousness. This requires a calm mind. So within your meditative practices, start to give your problems, issues and diseases permission to be there. Should negative feelings arise, let them be there too. If sadness arises, let that be there as well. If we have spent so long denying their existence, the first sign that they have your attention with open arms can be a "hallelujah" moment. Charity starts at home. And so does loving kindness. If you need help, get help. Start meditation at home, join a group, seek a suitable therapist that supports your journey. (Shameless plug I know) We tend to exert so much energy trying to change the unchangeable. But if we begin to turn toward the issue, eventually find gratitude past the resistance, then that is a huge step toward healing, and an opening for the body to do what it's designed to do; Heal Itself! 11.01.2022 Panic Attacks & Anxiety Disorders Some years ago, whilst in transit for my sales representative position, I was travelling down Punt Road Richmond in the centre lane of backed up traffic. Without much warning I broke into a sweat; the kind that saturates your clothes, experienced shortness of breath, severe chest pain and rapid heartbeat. I thought I was dying. With no quick solution to get to safety in heavy traffic, I abandoned my car and got to the curb. Some good Samarit...an helped with the abandoned car and offered to call an ambulance, but I refused the paramedics and eventually took a taxi to the doctors office. The taxi ride will forever be burned in my memory; A harrowing call to question my impending mortality. Doctors visit and tests revealed nothing abnormal. I didn't believe it, nor the subsequent opinions of six other doctors and the plethora of tests that kept proving my heart was in good order. It was at the 7th doctors visit where I presented panting, panicking and sweating that gave me the wake up call I suppose I was really looking for. "you have to change your lifestyle", said the doctor. Panic attacks can make us feel we are not safe in our own bodies. It is well-documented that an initial attack can lead to fears of further attacks which results in a vicious cycle of worrying about the next attack. Initial trauma and tests that reveal normal heart function can equal, "Am I going crazy?" type questions. The following year I cut out alcohol and coffee; known stimulants that stimulate the nervous system, changed to a job that supported a less stressful schedule, attended multiple therapy sessions and self talked myself through situations known to trigger attacks. Within that year, the panic episodes lessened in intensity, and by the end of two years they were completely gone. 30% of us experience at least one panic attack in our lives. I am forever grateful to that 7th doctor, his comment, without knowing anything about me, was enough for me to explore more authentic ways of living. His comment got me into a place where I was asking, "Why is this happening to me?" What if panic attacks and anxiety disorders are the body's way of telling us we are so far from home and it's time to come back? Looking at it from this angle, what if we learned to welcome them and spend time finding out what they are asking us to do.

09.01.2022 Treating Depression A Holistic Approach Depression: Psychiatric perspective: A mental condition characterized by feelings of severe despondency and dejection, typically also with feelings of inadequacy and guilt, often accompanied by lack of energy and disturbance of appetite and sleep. (thank you Oxford Dictionary) Depression; derived from the Latin word depressio, literally means press down, an apt description, I believe, of the hopelessness and despair experienced by s...uch a dire emotional affliction. How Depression is treated within the medical model varies, but all too often it appears to be a diagnose and medicate solution. Bare with me! Firstly, I want to set the precedence that I do not judge the depression sufferer for taking this path. Depression can be a grim and harrowing journey that I know all too well. However, I do question this model for its long term-effectiveness. In a recent UK study, it was found that: -No antidepressant has ever been found to be clinically more effective than a placebo in a significant way in treating Depression -Non-active, and active and placebo (pills that produce side effects only) have shown to be as effective as anti-depressants The causes of Depression are at times, well known to the sufferer and not limited to; trauma, loss and grief. And sometimes the cause needs a bit of teasing out. Breaking the cycle of Depression takes a little elbow grease and developing a tolerance for a little uncertainty. This may take more time than the Medical Model, however its proven effectiveness far surpasses the long-term anti-depressant path. As a Holistic Therapist, I am curious about why the depression is presenting itself, what is it asking us to look at, what actions could we take to help create an inner feeling of spaciousness, whether adequate exercise is being achieved and creating a meaningful supportive relationship. I believe that the Depression is there for a reason, and once it has had an opportunity to express itself fully, that symptoms start to dissipate and we can get on with enjoying life. The depressive experience can then become an asset and help us build resilience toward its symptoms. Bradley Ebden Transpersonal Counsellor/Psychotherapist www.melbourneholistic.com.au
