22.01.2022 Journey & Arrival At the Hospital Or Birthing Centre We thought it might be great to share some great tips of from the @hypnobirthinginternational blog that talks all about what to prepare and pack for your labour bag. These things are super handy to consider if you are traveling from home!... Know your way: Ensure you know the best and most effective route to the hospital, and perhaps consider preloading the destination into a navigation system. Try a practice run including where to park to eliminate stress on the day. Phone numbers: Have all important numbers saved ad ready for if you need to call hospital or birth centre to let them know to expect you, or others such as parents, pet/baby sitter etc Be practical : It might be a good idea to consider small tarps or waterproof sheets, as well as having extra towels on the seats especially prior to the release of your membranes. Some women may also experience nausea or vomiting during their birthing, so a bucket is also a good idea. Make it comfortable: Bring extra pillows and blankets for comfort, wear comfortable non-restrictive clothing, and have your relaxation and HypnoBirthing tracks on in the car, or in your headphones for use with a charged Ipod. If you have been using heat packs or something else for comfort during your labour at home, bring those too! On arrival..... Have any necessary paperwork on hand and fill out most of these things prior to your birthing day. Ensure that you have a copy of your birth preferences in your file, but have another with you to be sure that anyone coming into your birthing space is familiar and accepting of your wishes for this day. Create an environment conducive to birthing, by dimming the lights, covering the clocks, using your own pillows, birth balls, blankets, aromatherapy and music and other familiar items you find comforting and relaxing. Consider bringing with you a sign for the door to let people know that there is ‘HypnoBirthing in progress’. 19.01.2022 How many times do see or even experience the precious moments of first contact between mother and baby, be interrupted by a rush to clamp and cut the umbilical cord? The final cutting of complete physical contact. Delayed cord clamping is waiting between 1 minute to 10 minutes (sometimes more) - before clamping the umbilical cord, to allow nutrient-rich blood to flow to baby. When there are no risks to mother or baby following birth, the cord can be left as long as pos...sible- until it has completely stopped pulsating! There are several benefits to DCC such as boosted blood supply, improved oxygenation, and it carries very little risk. Deciding how long you'd like to wait before clamping will depend on your newborn's status, as well as your preferences. The healthy blood volume can benefit the baby preparing it for the transition into life outside the womb; providing full count of red blood cells, stem cells and immune cells which results in higher iron stores in the baby for up to six months. It also keeps the mother-baby unit intact and can prevent complications with delivering the placenta presenting great benefits for the mother. As always, consult your midwife about how this can be facilitated for your birth if it is part of your birth plan @laurenanddouglas.birth {still connected} #cord #umbillicalcord #cordclamping #hypnobirthing #justborn #freshbaby #birthphotography #lifeline #dcc #delayedcordclamping See more

19.01.2022 How perfect is this??? Thanks @birth_boot_camp Such an amazing picture depicting crowning! Crowning is when baby’s head is starting to emerge at the vaginal entrance during the very end stages of birth. Many women feel a burning sensation during this stage, or the burning ring of fire!!! The perineal muscle begins to stretch as baby’s edges closer and closer to birth. A slow birth of the head (as the pictures suggests) gives the muscle a chance to stretch, decreasing the r...isk of bad perineal tears, a slower and easier transition for baby as well. Even simple things in nature, such as these conkers, can imitate our own life events, such as birth #Repost by @midwife_aine #secondstage #birth #crowning #perinealstretch #nature #childbirth #pregnancy #newborn #newbaby #newmum #homebirth #homebirthireland #hsehomebirth #hospitalbirth #hypnobirthing #hypnobirthingmelbourne

18.01.2022 You will learn so many things during your HypnoBirthing course, and one of the main pillars will be the breathing techniques to use during pregnancy, labour and birth...and life really The theory behind breathing techniques during #birth is to maximise the amount of #oxygen available to you and your #baby . This is vital as it has been linked to reduced risk of fetal distress, less interventions and decreased likelihood of a surgical birth. During the course you will... learn 3 breathing techniques is very simple breath maintains a sufficient, continual supply of oxygen to your baby during labour. This oxygen is the most important fuel for the working muscles of your uterus. Its a wonderful breath to use in between surges to resume relaxation and conserve energy. breath is used during surges. It’s a very slow breath and is accompanied by a wonderful visualisation. This breath ensures every surge is extremely efficient, assisting the labour process, rather than resisting it. breath works with your body to gently move the baby down to crowning and birth. We explain why the common technique of ‘pushing’ can actually be counterproductive, can create stress for mum and baby and actually create fetal distress due to the lack of oxygen in the body. These beautiful breathing techniques can help to trigger your parasympathetic nervous system conserving energy and help to promote more calm vibes as you breathe bubs into the world #breathingtechniques #birthbreathing #Hypnobirthing #breatheandbirth #birthingbody #labour #childbirth #birthbreath #breathe #parasympatheticnervoussystem #sympatheticnervoussystem #yourbreathisyourpower g #meditation See more

17.01.2022 One of the strongest connections you'll ever have is with your new bub, and developing that initial bond is so important. It helps to release hormones and chemicals in the brain that encourage rapid brain growth. Bonding also promotes the development of connections between brain cells that are critical for learning; the growth of your baby's body; and the positive development of your baby's sense of who they are and how they deal with feeling upset. So staying close to your ...little one as much as you can, especially skin to skin, promotes nothing but the best for them. 14.01.2022 What to pack for labour Firstly how cute is this set of bags by @indielledesigns A few posts back we covered things that you may want to consider if you are traveling from home to a hospital or birthing centre. ... Below are just a few things to consider care of @hypnobirthinginternational that you might decide to pack specifically for your birth to help create an environment in which you feel nurtured, secure and comfortable for birthing : Ensure that you are wearing whatever it is that makes you feel comfortable and relaxed. Women often get cold feet, so pack some extra socks. Perhaps ones with grip on the bottom as you labour on your feet or move around the room freely in the birth positions of your choice. :These things are anything that might assist your comfort levels and facilitate different birthing positions. Anything from birth balls, heat packs, aromatherapy and essential oils, cold washers or face/room spritzer to relaxation music and HypnoBirthing tracks. Make sure if you are playing music from your phone that you have your charger too! *Dont't forget hair ties or a head band to keep hair off your face! Hydration is so important you will want a drink bottle that is easy to sip from. one with a straw top is handy. Be sure to have plenty of nutritious snacks for sustained energy for both you and your birthing companion. : Make sure it is charged and with a memory card ready to go. This is a once in a lifetime moment. : If you have chosen to encapsulate your placenta be sure to have your container packed and the contact details of your encapsulation specialist ' , ? #hypnobirthing #labourbag #birthbag #birthingbag #preparingforbirth #childbirth #wearehavingababy See more

12.01.2022 PAIN Maybe we have been looking at it from the wrong angle all this time. What if we understood it better? Here are some words of wisdom from @bestbirthco ... . . . During labour your first reaction to the pain you experience might be to tense up, to run from it, to control it with your mind. And wish it wasn’t happening in your body! Here is the thing, your body has been getting you ready for this pain every month since you started menarche. The labour pains you experience will be familiar to you, they are the foundational pain to which you will experience during your baby’s birthing day - AND you’ll no doubt wish you didn’t pop so many neurofen in your younger years (so you could have experienced & felt the intensity of cramping, so they weren’t as big a shock to you on the day!) The intensity of birth pain serves a purpose! It’s not life threatening! It’s not telling your body to run way and flee. It is telling your body to Relax our pelvic muscles. Let go. Surrender. Go with the flow. Don’t fight this. It’s bigger than you says @inamay.gaskin Surrender is the key! Go within, blockout the outer world & connect with our inner world. Come face to face with the pain, when you look at it, it will dissolve. Image credit : @andieandolliephotography

12.01.2022 Isn’t it funny how birth is a natural process, yet we forgot the basic fundamentals of natural human movement and laws of gravity when we encouraged the process of childbirth to be on one’s back? By simply remembering and working with nature’s processes, we can flow with it instead of against it #repost #birthpositions ... @australianbirthstories Did you know that being upright in labour can increase space in your pelvis by 30%. Small movements can have a big impact on opening up the pelvis. video credit: @rayvilelafisio

08.01.2022 Have you tried any of the below techniques to assist bubs in turning? #repost @hypnobirthinginternational Turning a Breech Baby ... A Breech Baby is when bub doesn't start to direct their head downwards around 32-37 weeks. There a few techniques designed to help 'turn' your baby such as The Webster Technique, Acupuncture & Moxibustion, Clinical Hypnotherapy, and there are organizations like @spinningbabies that can provide activities to help improve the position of your bub. However, not all babies turn. 3-4% of babies remain persistently up-right at term. We have to remember that this is the baby’s birth and sometimes they know best. 07.01.2022 HypnoBirthing is a journey.....Together There are a number of reasons why the @hypnobirthinginternational program is completed over 5 weeks. One of the most important is that it is a delicate process that a couple goes through in ‘emptying the cup’ of all of the fears and limiting beliefs that could hold be holding them back from having the birth they both deserve. ... This takes time. It takes commitment. Then once these fears have been released, we can then begin the process of ‘filling the cup’ with thoughts, beliefs and habits that will provide a strong foundation for a powerful and positive birth, no matter what turn the birthing takes! This does not happen in a 2 days course. Because it is a journey. It is a process. Investing the time together can be the most transformative experience that you will go through as a couple. And this sets the stage for a transformative birth. We have a couple openings for our January 10th course still available. 02.01.2022 What a great topic! This is one of the most uncomfortable thoughts that most of the mums-to-be will have at some point... What if I while I’m giving birth? Let’s begin to look at bowel movements before things are getting established (real birth).... To have diarrhoea could be one of the signs of labour, the reason behind is that the muscles in your uterus are relaxing in preparation for birth, and so are other muscles in your body like the ones in the rectum. During childbirth, you may feel the urge to open your bowls. The lower part of the colon is just behind the birth canal, the pressure of your baby’s head or bottom there, can give you the feeling that you need to go to the toilet . The colon acts like a tooth paste, and once your baby is descending everything that is behind the birth canal will be squeezed and pushed out (in case there is something ) The incredible thing is that you are going to be so focused on other much more important business at that time that you might not even realise this! For midwives, it is a wonderful sign that your baby is about to come! So what could be better than that . There is nothing to be afraid of, nothing to feel embarrassed about, nothing to feel uncomfortable about ... this is birth, and birth is tooooo beautiful with or without an unexpected surprise Pooping during labor just makes sense. Pushing a baby out utilizes the same muscles as pushing during a bowel movement. Baby has to move down! Anything in it's way will get compressed! Anything that can be released can only help baby pass through easier! #repost @bumptobabyacademy @lamazechildbirth #secondtrimester #birtheducation #naturalbirth #vaginalbirth #homebirth #hospitalbirth #waterbirth #doula #midwife #obstetrics #positivebirth #mumtobe2021 #humanbody #preggers #thirdtrimester #healthypregnancy #pregnancyannouncement #babyontheway #hypnobirthing #birthmatters #birthbecomesher #birtheducation #babyontheway #expectingmum #pregnancyzone See more

01.01.2022 Meconium stained amniotic fluid Green, brown or black in your released waters or on your maternity pad might be a sign of meconium (baby's first poo). Your midwife/healthcare professional will offer you monitoring to assess how baby is coping with labour and will also assess the fluid to see if it's thick or thin. Sometimes "show"/mucus plug can contain older blood which can look like brown streaks. If you are concerned about the colouring, you can take a photo of any pads... to show your midwife when being checked over. It’s important to note that - meconium stained waters is not only normal but very common if you have gone well past your due due date. This is because baby's digestive system has matured enough and it has already started to function, even if they haven't been born. Resulting in the meconium passing through into your waters. After 42 weeks, 30-40% of pregnancies will have meconium-stained amniotic fluid. There is a theory that meconium in baby's waters is a sign that they are severely distressed, though it has not been proven. Most babies who become distressed in labour do not pass meconium in utero and most babies who do pass meconium show no signs of distress. Regardless, in view of this theory, most babies who pass meconium will be treated as if they are distressed. This is due to care providers believing that meconium stained amniotic fluid can cause a rare condition called "Meconium Aspiration Syndrome". This is when a baby inhales the meconium into their lungs during birth and can cause serious complications. If it's confirmed to be significant meconium ( the presence of dark green, black or lumpy) and baby is showing signs of distress, your maternity care team may discuss your options for birth. It's likely they will strongly recommend birthing on a labour ward with continuous monitoring of baby using a CTG machine. These recommendations are based on common practice rather than research evidence. And it is recommended that you should not be offered CTG monitoring for "non-significant" meconium (yellow coloured, light meconium staining) unless there are other risk factors. #Repost @joanna.midwife : @austinbirthphotos
