25.01.2022 Help Veterans' Families Heal Today.

24.01.2022 Mask up Melbourne! We've done this before, so we can do it again... Remember to wear your masks, wash your hands and keep a safe distance from people. Most importantly, stay safe everyone. We can get through this!!!

24.01.2022 Digger bear produced another big smile as Melbourne Legacy teamed up with Empower Healthcare to bring Legacy Week to people like Miriam. Miriam shared her incredible story with us... "My husband served in the army as a gunner in WWII. He signed up day 1 of the war and served until the treaty papers were signed. He was deployed to the Middle East as part of the Second 12th Australian Field Regiment 9th Division. They fought the German General Rommell and his tanks as one of the original members of the famous Australian-led garrison - 'The Rats of Tobruk'. Over the course of the entire war, they had fired the most bullets from the cannon he was stationed on."

24.01.2022 Jett is on the way to meet Salty and Banjo to finally enjoy a teddy bear picnic in Melbourne (within his 5km radius) following the easing of restrictions announced recently. There may be a limit on the number of people you can invite, but there is no limit on how many Legacy bear friends you can take with you on your picnic. So jump onto our store and buy your Legacy bears today! Visit https://melbournelegacy.force.com/store/s/

24.01.2022 Happy National Volunteers Week! Legacy was founded by our very own volunteers, called Legatees, and they have been volunteering since the inception of Legacy in 1923, for almost 100 years now. We have been looking through our history recently and it has made us reflect on everything our Legatees have done, and continue to do for Legacy. This picture was published in the 90s. It perfectly encapsulates the importance of our Legatees, and remains relevant to this day. We truly ...couldn't do it without them. Thank you, Legatees - Unpaid, Unnamed, Unsung & Irreplaceable.

24.01.2022 Activision Blizzard, the creators of Call of Duty, Candy Crush and many more, have gone above and beyond this year by providing personalised Christmas gift hampers to our beneficiaries with a disability. Almost 50 Melbourne Legacy beneficiaries were contacted to create a Christmas list for Activision Blizzard, who then played Santa and tailored each hamper with everything they wanted (and more) as no gift was deemed too difficult nor too expensive. This initiative has brought our beneficiaries so much happiness, especially since for many of them, this may be one of the only gifts they receive. We are so grateful for the time and enthusiasm that Activision Blizzard’s staff invested in this - thank you!

24.01.2022 Throughout our Remembrance Day appeal, we offered our donors with the opportunity to write personally to the families in which their donation supports. It got us thinking what a great family we have here at Legacy... If you are need of help, please don't hesistate to contact us at [email protected] or call (03) 8626 0500. Alternatively, if you are looking to support a veterans' family in need, you can donate today at https://melbournelegacy.force.com/donation/s/

23.01.2022 Legacy's support toward the families of veterans is unique for every person in our care. We are committed to supporting the welfare of our servicemen and women's families. On behalf of all of them, we would like to say thank you.

23.01.2022 We are continuing the spirit of sharing with another Legacy Week Listen & Learn. Today's video features Melbourne Demons star Angus Brayshaw, who will be taking you through an equipment-free workout from the AFL hub in QLD! Angus' older brother Will serves in the ADF, an important part of the Legacy network. #melbournelegacy #listenandlearn

22.01.2022 There’s something magical about the bond between humans and horses. Magical... and truly healing. Equine assisted psychotherapy is a remarkable program that helps soothe veterans and their families who suffer from the devastating effects of PTSD. Horses have an amazing ability to reduce stress and a truly unique capacity to share their empathy with humans. They never judge, they are completely honest, and they are also great listeners.... 22.01.2022 In an incredible story that sees history being pieced together through Victorian Collections, Melbourne Legacy was honoured to present the missing 10 pages of Priscilla Wardle’s diary to her grandchildren today. Priscilla Wardle, a World War 1 nurse in France, had written a diary over 100 pages long, which was transformed by her descendants into a detailed diary transcription of over 300 pages, containing photographs, documents and letters. This diary transcription was then m...ade available on Victorian Collections as a PDF. Our volunteer archivist, Kath, made it known on Victorian Collections that Melbourne Legacy held 10 pages of a diary, and her research suggested that it may have belonged to Priscilla Wardle. It was through recognising this connection that enabled Melbourne Legacy to reunite this archived project to where it belongs in the hands of Priscilla Wardle’s descendants, who hold the rest of the diary. We hope that this success story of piecing together history excites you just as much as it does us! Pictured (left to right) from the back is Jo Moloney (CEO), Geoff Webb (President) and Lynda Bernard (Victorian Collections), and from the front displays archivist, Kath Leech and Priscilla Wardle’s granddaughters Judith Singleton, Amanda Carolan and Kay Sleeman (who was able to attend virtually).

22.01.2022 Friday the 23rd of April saw the 89th Annual ANZAC Commemoration Ceremony for Students at the Shrine of Remembrance. Although this year we could not host our usual 6000 students, we were able to have students from Melbourne High School, Mac Robertson High School, Scotch College and Sirius College and a live steam to the public and other schools. The ANZAC Commemoration Ceremony for students is an annual service to honour Australia’s brave service men and women through the eye...s of the young. The service features student guest speakers, school bands and choirs along with attendance by the Defence Force cadets. The Commemoration Ceremony is proudly supported by Melbourne Legacy’s patron, Her Excellency the Honourable Linda Dessau AC, Governor of Victoria. It was fantastic to have everyone there again this year to honour the sacrifice of those who served our country and their families. We would also like to give special thanks to The Shrine of Remembrance, Victorian Veterans Council, Nelson Bros and the Governor.

21.01.2022 Legacy badges may be little, but the funds they raise make a big impact on the lives of our veterans’ families. Make a donation this Legacy Week at https://melbournelegacy.force.com/donation/s/

20.01.2022 Equine psychotherapy is a life-changing program that works with veterans and their families to help them heal from the trauma of PTSD, anxiety and depression. Not only does it help families to work through mental health trauma, it also provides the opportunity to rebuild relationships that have been tested to breaking point due to mental health issues. The healing that can come from these horses has benefited more than 200 veterans and their family members.... Find out more at melbournelegacy.com.au/healing

20.01.2022 As Legacy Week 2020 comes to a close, Lieutenant Lucy is jetting off for a well earned break... "See you back on the streets of Melbourne next year crew!" But that doesn't mean that our bears aren't still sneaking around #LegacyBearHunt

20.01.2022 Every year, on the 11th of November, we pause to remember those men and women who have died or suffered in all wars, conflicts and peace operations. At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, we will remember them. Lest we forget.

19.01.2022 We are so excited to be continuing our partnership with The Path of the Horse after we have seen a successful 12 months whereby this incredible organisation has continued to deliver meaningful experiences for our veterans and their families through equine psychotherapy.

19.01.2022 Our Legacy Youth were once again reunited in person this April, all thanks to the Geelong Adventure Specialists (GAS) who facilitated two exciting Legacy camps in Anglesea and Mt Arapiles. Many kids could be seen enjoying the activities which included canoeing, surfing, campfires, rock climbing, abseiling and more, and after going without Legacy camps for a bit over a year, they already "want to know when the next one is. We're already looking forward to the next round of GA...S winter camps, due to occur between June/July. Did you ever attend a Legacy camp back in the day? Please tell us in the comments - we'd love to hear all about it!

19.01.2022 We LOVE this #LegacyBearHunt video from The Daily Talk Show Check out his video, buy a bear, download the activity pages and get involved! Video credit: Big Media Company Tommy Jackett

18.01.2022 Jett and Salty met this morning to walk their furry friend, Issy. Have you spotted any Legacy bears out and about lately?

16.01.2022 For Legacy Week this year, we’ve launched a new video series: ‘Legacy Listen and Learn’. In today’s video, we are joined by Prue Gill, who has been involved with Melbourne Legacy for over 40 years since her husband returned from the Vietnam War. Hear Prue talk about her experiences with Legacy back then, and how she is staying connected today through our Arts & Crafts program. #melbournelegacy #listenandlearn

13.01.2022 Little bear, big impact. Thank you Empower Healthcare, not only for supporting us during Legacy Week, but for capturing all of the fond memories that the residents within your care have shared with Legacy. Each resident had a story to share, and our bears offered a visual representation of that story. We loved hearing all about how our little bears sparked joy and nostalgia as the residents shared their unique stories with one another. ... You can check out the series on their blog: https://www.empowerhealthcare.com.au/community-appreciation/

11.01.2022 Today is national R U OK?Day. This day serves as a reminder to ask our fellow Australians Are you OK? not just today but every day. This year's message is: There's more to say after 'Are you OK?'... For more information, head to their website https://www.ruok.org.au/join-r-u-ok-day

11.01.2022 Remembering the sacrifice of our veterans continues long after Remembrance Day. After all, Legacy is about leaving a legacy behind for those who have fought for our country.

10.01.2022 We loved seeing the Vivian Bullwinkel Veterans and Families Wellbeing Centre featured in CBD News! The centre is the first of its kind and marks the significant coming together of Melbourne Legacy and RSL Victoria. Although our Wellbeing Centre is temporarily closed as a result of lockdown restrictions, please don't hesitate to contact us if you need help during this time. You can reach us via email at [email protected] or call (03) 8626 0500.

08.01.2022 Make sure to check out this COVID-friendly website featuring information on 18 different locations within Victoria and the impact that each of them made on Victoria during WW2.

08.01.2022 Today is World Gratitude Day! It can be very easy to get caught up in the doom and gloom, especially here in Melbourne. One practice that we have put in place at Melbourne Legacy is to say something that we are grateful for each and every day, which can be truly invaluable. The next step is to create a visual reminder through a gratitude jar. We wrote a blog to help get you started: https://www.melbournelegacy.com.au/start-a-gratitude-jar

08.01.2022 What did Legacy Week look like for you this year? 07.01.2022 Although COVID-19 cancelled our camps this year, we are so happy to see our Junior Legatees still connecting virtually with Geelong Adventure Specialists (GAS). We captured this image of our Legacy Youths proudly displaying their unique Christmas crafts, created throughout the program. We can't wait to see everyone in person real soon!

05.01.2022 Thank you to everyone who has helped support veterans' families this Legacy Week by purchasing from our online store. Our bears have been very busy packing all of your orders. We apologise for any delays that may be caused as a result of COVID-19 and we thank you for your patience. Please call us on (03) 8626 0500 if you're having any issues or still haven't received your order.

04.01.2022 Over Melbourne's second lockdown, Melbourne Legacy's widows continued to craft connections through the Mask Craft Program. This program, provided as an extension of our Pen Pal Craft Program which took place during the first lockdown, enabled the ladies to create homemade masks to adhere to Melbourne's mandatory face mask regulation. Of the 100+ masks that were created by our talented widows, each one had their very own unique touch, whether it was a different pattern, embroidery or artwork sewn on. These wonderful masks were then onforwarded to other Melbourne Legacy widows participating in the program. Exchanging homemade masks was a great way to enable our ladies to share their craft talents and to stay connected from the safety of their own homes.

03.01.2022 There is ALWAYS something we can do. 02.01.2022 We are so pleased to share a Listen and Learn today, focused on mindfulness. Dean from The Path of the Horse is an expert on guiding people with PTSD and other mental health conditions through mindfulness activities with the assistance of his beautiful horses. We are proud partners of The Path of the Horse, and love seeing how much their services assist Legacy families.

02.01.2022 As you know, today is R U OK?Day. We would like to use this day to remind all our families that our dedicated case managers are always here to provide support, especially during this tough time. There is always something WE can do.

01.01.2022 A big shout out to Empower Healthcare for bringing Legacy Week to the residents in which they care for. It is great to see our bears putting a smile to some faces. We will be sharing some of their unique stories. Here we have Patricia with Digger bear... I am very pleased with Legacy and my whole family was well looked after during the war time. My dad served in France during WWI. My brother served in Korea during WWII. My nephew served during the Vietnam war. They are a ter...rific organisation! You can buy your own bear through our online store https://melbournelegacy.force.com/store/s/

01.01.2022 Badge Day is here, and for the first time in 78 years, we are not on the streets of Melbourne rattling tins and selling badges. The Legacy badge symbolises our nation’s greatest values of mateship, compassion and fairness. You can still buy a badge and make a profound impact on a family today. Visit https://melbournelegacy.force.com/store/s/badges

01.01.2022 We have been reminiscing on 2020... Here we have a lovely card that one of our donors sent to a Legacy kid. It reads: I was at Oakleigh State school during WW2 and in my class was the older of 2 girls whose father was killed in Japan war camp. It was amazing to me that my friend always had new or near new socks all the time, mine became quite tattie but hers were always very nice. Thank you Legacy for helping that family so long ago. My friend died just recently. Both my father and brother served in WW2. The beloved man I married also served in WW2 (all in the army). Eunice
