22.01.2022 We had a good catch-up with Senior and 21s player Hamish Grey 1) Where are you currently? ... - I returned back to New Zealand in late March with Jake, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. 2) Where in NZ do you live and what’s the situation like? - I am in Auckland, New Zealand. At the moment, we are going through a small scale second wave of Covid-19, so Auckland is in level 3 lockdown. Hopefully after a few weeks, we will be back to somewhat normal life in alert level 2. 3) What was your reason for coming to the Melbourne Lions and how were you finding futsal in Australia? - I came to the Lions because I saw an opportunity to develop and grow as a player and person on and off the court, while playing for the best futsal team in Australia. This was especially because I would have high quality games and trainings every week throughout the whole year, compared to New Zealand where the season is only in the second half of the year. Another strong influence for me to come to the Lions was the mentors, coaches and people I would be learning from to name a few, André Caro, @Paul Vidic, Jake Besenyi, Gerardo Soto, Alejandro M Gómez Jiménez, Kevin Robert etc. I found that futsal in Australia is a different game to futsal in New Zealand the small court changes the game significantly, as it creates more 1v1 opportunities, gives you less time on the ball and makes the game significantly more physical. However, I felt that I learnt a lot during the time I had in Australia so far, and I can’t wait to be back playing there soon. 4) What’s your goals within the sport? - The biggest goal would be to play for the Futsal Whites at a World Cup. I have grown up seeing the older New Zealand players come so close to qualifying, so it is a massive goal for me to play for and help the Futsal Whites reach their first World Cup. On top of that, I want to play professional futsal in the future. 5) Who’s your favourite athlete? - My favourite athlete has to be Cristiano Ronaldo Ronaldo was always one of my favourite football players and he’s one of the greatest of all time. But the thing that stands out the most is his mindset of always wanting to improve and be better than he was before, no matter what age or what point he is at in his career. 6) What’s one good habit you’ve picked up over the lockdown period? - Definitely the habit of simply being productive with my days training, learning something, studying something and so on. Doing as much as I can to help myself develop and achieve my goals. 21.01.2022 Dear Lions families, It is with great sadness that we share the news with you that Futsal Oz has made the heart breaking decision to close their doors due to the COVID 19 pandemic. If you have not already heard please head over to the Futsal Oz Facebook or instagram page and have a read about the situation that this pandemic has left them in.... From a club that has been around from the start of the Futsal Oz beginnings and a club with such a rich history from the many years that the Futsal Oz organisation has been running, our deepest sympathy is with the teams that run all 3 Futsal Oz stadiums. As for our club we can only wait and see what state restriction ease and wait to see what options the club has moving forward for all age groups from the junior teams to the elite teams.
