25.01.2022 Meditation Tip By showing some interest in your thoughts (instead of swishing them away like flies) you'll naturally experience less aversion and resistance to them. This is one simple and effective way to enjoy meditation a little more, and to be less bothered by what's going on in your head, even if that's a litany of thoughts about work, or a seemingly trivial commentary on what's going on during your meditation or in your life. With a little curiosity, things can appear quite differently.
25.01.2022 The experts on oral hygiene (i.e. dentists) recommend that you spend about three minutes, twice a day, cleaning your teeth. The experts on mental hygiene recommend that you get enough sleep and exercise, and do some form of breathing exercise and / or meditation or mindfulness practice. What's more important to you: mental or dental?
24.01.2022 You should always feel calm when meditating, right? That's the aim. And a 'good' meditator someone who has practiced for long enough should never get angry or irritable at all? Well, in a word, no. The idea that calm is the pinnacle of human achievement and the primary goal of meditation is deeply flawed and problematic. Calm is nice, but calm can not do the essential job that other emotions do.... To test this assertion, simply ask yourself what it would be like if you never ever got angry. What would it be like if you were completely unable to feel that emotion? Or read this short account about someone who rejects their anger: https://www.hilaryjacobshendel.com//11/20/befriending-anger
23.01.2022 Your job in meditation is NOT to calm your mind. Your job is to treat your thoughts and emotions with curiosity and care. A calm mind will be the natural side-effect of welcoming your thoughts and emotions. A disturbed, frustrated mind will be the result if you try to block them out or force yourself to be calm.
21.01.2022 There's one simple fact (or perhaps cruel joke) that you need to get before meditation will begin to make sense, and it can take quite a while to appreciate: Your mind becomes clear when you stop trying to clear it.
21.01.2022 The Australian Feldenkrais Guild is running it's 2020 Online Summit starting from September 1. I tuned in for a number of last years sessions and very much enjoyed the interesting perspectives and practical demonstrations of Feldenkrais in action. This years summit includes talks on learning, pain, anxiety, awareness through movement, yoga and mindfulness and I expect everything to have interesting applications for meditators and meditation teachers. More information at https://www.feldenkrais.org.au/
20.01.2022 If you're trying to win a game of tennis or to break your personal record at the gym, then pressuring yourself to perform at your best could be a helpful strategy. Meditation, however, usually works best when you DON'T put any pressure on yourself to perform.
20.01.2022 Sometimes checking in with your emotions will help you make good decisions, whilst thinking something through (rationally and logically) will lead to predictable and poor decisions. #emotionsrock
16.01.2022 You may have assumed (or been taught) that meditation is a skill to be learned and mastered through long and dedicated practice. But it can also be viewed as a naturally occurring rest state, accessible to anyone.
14.01.2022 Here's a nice way to start your Wednesday: Enjoy this thought-provoking post from Irreverent Mind w Judy Cohen.
14.01.2022 If you have taken up meditation you have probably also given up; for a day, or a month, or a year. Do you see this as a failure to commit, a lack of will, a shortage of time? Or perhaps as something necessary and wise?

13.01.2022 Don't make your meditation practice an excruciating labor. If that's how it feels, your practice isn't going to last long. An attitude of genuine curiosity about your own mind is the way to make meditation feel like less of a chore.... Ethan Nichtern.
13.01.2022 Without the foundation of self-compassion (kind, encouraging and supportive inner talk) mindfulness might seem like a chore, hard work, or even an ordeal. Whoever and wherever you are, you deserve that kindness.

10.01.2022 It's good to remind yourself (in Lorin Roche's words) that: Meditation is a naturally occurring rest state; it is resting in yourself while staying awake and alert. Meditation is innate, and your body already knows how to do it. The human body has an instinctive ability to shift into profound rest states in order to heal, energise, integrate, tune itself up and assimilate learning. It is almost a sure bet that you have already experienced this many times in your life.
09.01.2022 The brain is biased to believe that what it hears is true. It’s captured by novelty and fear-inducing information. ~ Amishi Jha via Everyday Mindfulness.

08.01.2022 The key point to remember in finding the correct posture for meditation is...correct for whom? If you are trying to imitate some posture you have seen illustr...ated in a book on meditation, you are going to have a problem right away, because every aspect of meditation, including something as seemingly objective and observable as the posture, is entirely subjective. Always, you have to find your own way. ~ Clark Strand, from Meditation without Gurus
08.01.2022 You can meditate by finding a quiet place and turning your attention to your breath for twenty minutes at a time. But you can also integrate meditation into you day in an infinite variety of ways (by deliberately savouring the textures of your day for a few moments at a time). For example, you could:... * pause to appreciate your pet * stop to look up at the clouds * notice what flowers are in bloom * enjoy your post-workout buzz * take the time to relish the taste of your food * listen deeply to the sounds (or music) around you Some people might insist that these are mindfulness practices, rather than meditation per se. But isn't a formal meditation simply a succession of such moments? What's your favourite mini-meditation? Have you invented any of your own?

06.01.2022 Meditation Tip When meditating, you may have noticed that 'letting go of thoughts' is sometimes not possible. At such times, all you can do is let them come, or let them be. Alternatively, you may find it more appropriate to spend your time 'meditating' on your thoughts; exploring such things as how they form, how they get processed, where they lead and in what ways you become aware of them.
06.01.2022 The benefits of meditation are widely documented and accepted today. If you still think it's a bit 'woo', then you've probably been exposed to some woo ideas about it. They certainly still exist, but you can also find meditation practices that are simple, practical and grounded in science.
05.01.2022 Meditation Australia's inaugural online summit will be held on Saturday October 31. Check out the details below.
04.01.2022 Nearly everyone is familiar with the tension that lives in the neck and shoulders and is a result, in part, of sitting at a desk, peering at a computer screen and typing / mouse-clicking busily. If you pause right now, just for a few moments, where do you find tension? And what happens if you:... 1. Hold your tongue lightly against the roof of your mouth, just behind the front teeth. 2. Lift your eyebrows slightly, as though in surprise. 3. Allow a hint of a smile to register on your face. 4. Place both feet flat on the floor, evenly spaced. 5. Imagine someone gently poking you in the centre of the back, so the chest is thrust forward (and the shoulders roll back) a fraction.
04.01.2022 The most stressful environment many of us have to face is the workplace. It's the place where the ability to remain clear-headed and emotionally balanced is perhaps most critical. It makes sense then, that we should apply our meditation and mindfulness skills during the working day, not simply before it begins or after we're done for the day.
01.01.2022 Kick off your week with a free Monday Morning meditation session during August, offered online by graduates of MMC's Meditation Teacher Training program.
01.01.2022 "Another thing I mentioned to my client was that she should just give up trying to control her thoughts and feelings because it cannot be done. I know this sounds defeatist but it really isn’t. If looked at in the right way, it can be truly liberating. This is because once we understand that we don’t have conscious control over our thoughts and emotions, and that we never did, we can begin to stop wasting so much of our energy and time trying to stop something that cannot b...e stopped. Trying to stop thoughts from arising is like trying to stop breathing. The more we aim to feel better, the more we are trying to swim upstream against the flow of the current like a struggling duck. The idea is to free yourself from any expectation of how you should be feeling and what you should be thinking. Once you can live in this state, you are giving all of our thoughts and sensations freedom to be. When you give something freedom to be, you will experience a sense of freedom in return. Crucial reminder: Trying to control our thoughts, emotions and bodily sensations is rather futile because they happen outside of our conscious control. No matter how hard we try to manipulate our inner state, the thoughts and sensations are going to be there regardless. Let them be there, don’t bother trying to change, stop or argue with them." Lawrence Gregory, Unlearn Your Anxiety
