24.01.2022 A GREAT FILMING LOCATION : MMOP has been involved in about a dozen filmic episodes over the years. Recently we have had two film crews on site. One will feature in our next cover (and supporting pix), showing the Studio, Linotype and various areas 'in a new light'. Just one pic for now: its a wide one, lots of detail: click on it to see the whole view of the Studio 'under occupation'. (You can get a preview on our Pinterest site.)

22.01.2022 The MMOP Feature in The Age Newspaper, 31 March 2018. Partial view. Joseph Hinchliffe writer, Jason South Photographer. Copyright.

21.01.2022 The next day, action moved to the Linotype area where crew and cast are seen relaxing around the machinery, camera at the ready.

21.01.2022 A view across the Studio, the Ludlow Typograph in the foreground with its inner workings revealed: can you identify the hot-metal crucible? The paper room is visible through the distant doorway. Tom the Director is "directing" and the crew are thinking about it.

20.01.2022 This is the typesetting that produced the original 2009 MMOP LOGO. (We never had one til then.) The 6-em square spaces (that's one inch) give an idea of the size of these poster types.

18.01.2022 MUSEUM LOOKS DIFFERENT UNDER LIGHTS MMOP has been involved in many film shoots, some in outside locations and many on our own site. In January the crew and cast for "Grammar Codes" took over the Letterpress Studio and other parts, for an educational on-line production. CLICK ON PICTURE TO VIEW ALL FIVE IMAGES IN ALBUM... The crew from "ClickView Australia" were filming for five days. The result will be available on ClickView.com.au in a month or two, they said. ClickView is a subscription service used in many schools. We may get a cut-down version on our web-page in due course (how long is that?) Elmore the typesetter is keen to pass his knowledge of grammar to all he meets even if it interrupts his work. We get to see him using movable type and the Linotype hot-metal system - until his cleaning lady comes into view and he can tell her about clauses, sentences, adjectival phrases and all that. All the while, we can see various spaces of MMOP invaded by the crew and lit up nicely. YOU CAN SEE all these places and more when you support MMOP by taking our Professional Development workshop (Roots of Printing) or other programs. With "ROP" you learn the nuts and bolts of planning and composition with real type and manual operation of a printing press. Please look at our R.O.P. webpage http://mmop.org.au/program/educ/typod1.htm By taking this workshop you'll not only have an interesting day and improve your understanding of the typographic process, you'll also be helping MMOP to stay alive.

15.01.2022 In the composing room (where Studio users and R.O.P. students compose their lines of text), the director lines up the next shot while the two actors rehearse their lines of speech. The two cases of wooden type are here to "decorate the set". The bench with the vyce doubles as our repair shop! At the end of the bench is a very useful "lead rack" with lead spacing strips precut to lengths from 10 picas to 51 picas.

14.01.2022 The film crew are setting up their camera and lights in the studio. They have moved the usual presses away to create a workspace for themselves. Against the distant wall the two trianguloids are "furniture racks" which carry the larger spacing pieces ("furniture") in lengths from 10 picas to 60 picas and widths of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10 picas. How good is that? There is a fascinating random typesetting in the foreground: come and admire it! We may reprint it one day with the artist's consent.

13.01.2022 Melbourne Museum of Printing A glance back at "the old days of MMOP". Very productive people were busy with great projects. Where are you? Come and learn the ancient craft of typesetting! Now we have some bad new and some good news ... MMOP's big premises, suitable for a big collection, have been costing too much and we are in big debt. BUT NOW ... the owner of a nearby apartment is selling it urgently and the ENTIRE NETT PROCEEDS will be handed to MMOP to reduce the debt! S...TAY TUNED for details of a great location near the City (of Melbourne) that is to be SOLD in the next few days. Pictures will be posted here soon. Or see the pastiche of images at mmop.org.au/fundraiser.

13.01.2022 The Type foundry at MMOP makes movable types like these. Sizes are from 6-pt (phone directory size) up to 48 and 60-pt like these. Other museums, enthusiasts, and university design departments like to buy these fonts. IT IS ALL AT RISK OF BEING SCRAPPED, like everything else in the Museum.... I always believed that MMOP would get serious support but now I need help, in talking it up with people who can offer a major loan, sponsorship or philanthropic support, it will be saved. Or if my family sell their home. [not going there.] Due Diligence packages will be supplied to potential funding bodies. Michael . . . [email protected]

11.01.2022 At last! Are these Linotype operators casting the lines for the next edition of the MMOP newspaper? The crew and cast have a go at "operating" the Linotypes. The "copy boy" is Rion, a movie maker from Sydney. Perhaps one day we really will compose a newspaper here: a long-held dream. Are you a mechanic? Would you like to help with our machinery?

07.01.2022 MAYBE IT'S NOT ALL OVER!! The big MMOP Auction has been and gone. KEY MACHINERY ETC WILL BE RETURNED Now MMOP has one more chance, but we MUST MOVE QUICKLY.... Volunteers are needed to clean up and pack the thousands of archival items and spare parts left on the floor by inconsiderate auction clients. Much of the infrastructure (benches, tables, plinths, display units etc) are still there, to help the re-start. The LANDLORD is willing to lease the building to MMOP again (conditions apply). Go to to MMOP HOME-PAGE to read what we must do. mmop.org.au COVID-19 WORK PERMITS WILL BE ISSUED

05.01.2022 TWO STEPS FORWARD . . . ONE STEP BACK . . . TWO MORE . . . Do you like the Cover Picture/pastiche of our Showroom? This is what our general visitors will experience. The Age Feature serves as our Profile, for now....Continue reading

03.01.2022 FILMMAKING AT MMOP In January the crew and cast for "Grammar Codes" took over the Letterpress Studio and other parts, for an educational video on "ClickView". Many schools subscribe to ClickView and students will be able to watch it in full. Most visitors are fascinated by movable types, especially the large wooden ones, so there was plenty of exposure to typecases of wooden type.... THIS MONTH'S PROFILE is a "relevant word" composed in wooden type, that appeared in some scenes and may appear in the finished video. See more on MMOP's Pinterest site www.pinterest.com/mmop_AU/ The "relevant word" is composed in 18-line wooden type (that means 18 picas or 18 x 12 points).

02.01.2022 This Cover Picture is a pastiche of 'slice views' around the MMOP Showroom. This is the area where our "General Admission" visitors see what printing is all about.

02.01.2022 The MMOP logo, composed in poster type by a group of supporters. They tried a number of settings with various faces. This was of course printed black, and has been reversed digitally for the facebook profile.

01.01.2022 Still trying for some Good News! MMOP Programs are SUSPENDED ufn. Comment by Michael Isaachsen, Founder and Curator:...Continue reading
