25.01.2022 The Great Ocean Road is iconic but not many people know the story behind it. The first part of the road from Eastern View to Apollo Bay was built by 3,000... soldiers who had just returned home from World War One. They used shovels and picks to move mud and rock while hanging from ropes over the pounding sea. The road was designed to be a permanent reminder of the service of the men and women who wear the uniform of this country and sixteen years after the first sod was turned, the Great Ocean Road was officially recognised as the longest war memorial in the world. One hundred years on, and this is still one of the most special parts of our state. So pay a visit and pay your respects.
