25.01.2022 September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and here are the facts; - In Australia, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men - Approximately 3,500 Australian men die of prostate cancer each year - More men die of prostate cancer than women die of breast cancer... - In Australia, five-year relative survival for prostate cancers diagnosed at Stage 1 is 100%. - The survival rate for Stage 4 cancers is just 36.4%. And yet only about 36% of prostate cancers are diagnosed at Stage 1, when we know we have a much better chance of beating it for good. Getting checked doesnt have to mean a digital exam either; new methods of diagnosis such as blood tests can be used to determine the health of your prostate. So go on, get checked. The outcome may not be as bad as you thought it could be. #prostatecancerawarenessmonth #melbourneosteopathy #feelgoodagain

25.01.2022 Fall Prevention Falls are an ominous yet very real part of life for people over 65, although many falls can be prevented once the cause is determined. Risk factors leading to falls have been identified including: lack of physical activity resulting in loss of muscle tone, decreased bone mass, poor balance, reduced flexibility, impaired vision, medications, disease including Parkinsons, dementia, stroke etc. More often than not they result in serious injury, loss of confid...ence, and reduced mobility. All of these can subsequently lead to loss of independence and quality of life. Osteopaths can play a crucial role in the prevention of falls in older people. There is evidence that appropriately prescribed interventions can be beneficial. The strongest single predictor of future falls is a history of previous falls. This is probably because an individuals reason for falling the first time is likely to recur. Assessment of physical functioning is the next strongest predictor. Osteopathy helps you maintain your vital independence with the implementation of individual, group class and home exercise programs for balance, strength and fall prevention. Our programs are individually tailored from assessment through to exercise prescription. This allows us to accurately identify which of the myriad of potential causative factors are at play and address them specifically. Catering exercises and treatments to your needs is key for your road to recover. It is never too late to start exercising, if you or a member of your family are concerned with your safety and balance, we would love the opportunity to assist you. #melbourneosteopathy #feelgoodagain

25.01.2022 To our dearest patients, In the face of the current spike in local community transmission of COVID-19, MOH has made the difficult decision to once again temporarily transition to Telehealth based care. Melbourne Osteohealth has been using Telehealth and remote care for several years to manage a cohort of international and interstate patients so we have no doubt th...at we can continue to care for you and support you well through these trying times. This is a temporary measure that will remain in place just until local transmission eases. In the interim, Telehealth appointments can be made via the booking button on our website or by following the link below. Please take care of yourselves. Keep washing those hands, keep your distance and wear a mask where you cannot guarantee you can keep a safe distance from others. Well look forward to seeing you again on the other side! 21.01.2022 Osteopathy and the Rotator Cuff Shoulder complaints are super common in the manual medicine and physical therapies realm. We see shoulder pain and injury in association with a range of work and sporting activities that are repetitive, involve overhead work or heavy loads. Some of the more common problems include tendinopathies, bursitis, and dislocations and frequently, one of these things will lead to another, making shoulders notoriously tricky. ... The key in addressing shoulders is developing a comprehensive plan that simultaneously addresses pain, strength, mobility and coordination. 21.01.2022 Functional trunk movement Your trunk, aka. your torso makes up the bulk of your body and houses most of your vital organs like your heart, lungs, liver and kidneys. We see people present with upper back and rib pain all the time but these are not the only people with trunk dysfunction. In fact many trunk dysfunctions will present as pain at other areas of the body. We often see shoulder injuries, neck pain, headaches or low back pain where the primary area of dysfunction is a...ctually the trunk or thoracic cage! To do all of these things well we need to have a combination of strength, flexibility and full body coordination. It is very common for people living modern lifestyles to lose thoracic mobility and flexibility, because many of us do not use our full range of motion at work, or play. The video below demonstrates simple techniques that can help to improve trunk mobility. What you will see is a combination of mobility exercises to restore flexibility to the thorax, and some whole-body coordination exercises to improve our trunk and limb control. https://youtu.be/FM3BGDHhiTA #feelgoodagain #MelbourneOsteopathy

20.01.2022 Diagnosing Your Pain History & Assessment Not all pain is the same. There are a few key types of pain and they all require different treatment approaches, so our first job is to work out what sort of pain you have. Is it pain associated with an acute connective tissue injury, is it a nerve injury or is it a disorder of heightened nerve sensitivity?... To work this out we’ll ask you a heap of questions about the nature, timing and intensity of your pain, and try to clarify how it came about and what other symptoms it might be associated with. We’ll also need to consider your health history, your medications and your family history to ensure we have a good understanding of the types of problems you’re most likely to be prone to. We’ll also conduct a range of assessments; - A musculoskeletal exam will help us identify connective tissue injuries - A neurological exam will help us identify neurological disease or injury - An assessment of nerve sensitivity to a range of stimuli will help us understand how sensitive your nervous system is If you’re struggling with pain anywhere in your bodyand nothing seems to be working, maybe it’s time to try something new. Let us give you a helping hand to get back to doing the things you love, make an appointment with one of our Osteopaths. https://www.melbourneosteohealth.com/book-online/ If you’re not sure if we can help you specifically, please get in touch so we can help put you on the path to recovery, call 03 8370 3044. #feelgoodagain #melbourneosteohealth #MelbourneOsteopathy

20.01.2022 MOH Tip - Unresolved knee injuries can have a significant impact on your entire leg and lower back. It may change the way you walk and run, the way you bend and squat, and worst of all it may actually prevent you from returning to the physical activities you enjoy most. Addressing any restrictions below the knee is a vital part of the process, and it is very common for us to focus on your foot and ankle function when we get you started on a rehabilitation program. 17.01.2022 Condition Spotlight - Whiplash Injuries Whiplash is a non-medical term describing a range of head and neck injuries resulting from an acceleration-deceleration mechanism of energy transfer to the neck. These forces may result in painful injuries to the muscles, ligaments, and joints of the neck and other spinal areas. However, sometimes they may result in no injury or pain at all.... Whiplash differs in severity from patient to patient, and as such, symptoms vary between cases. Directly after impact, patients may not be aware of any neck swelling or bruising. Symptoms typically arise between 12 and 24 hours after the accident. However, pain and stiffness from whiplash is typically worse on the day following the accident and may continue to worsen with each day. An Osteopath will perform a head and neck examination and discuss your symptoms with you to determine the best course of whiplash treatment. What can make whiplash injuries difficult to treat is that, while they usually present as neck pain, which usually responds well to osteopathic treatment, a lot of structures can be involved. The weight of the head moving around can put forces through your entire spine down to your pelvis, and through the front of your body down to your abdomen. A range of physical, and even psychological symptoms can result. Find out more https://www.melbourneosteohealth.com/whiplash-injuries/ #feelgoodagain #melbourneosteopathy

17.01.2022 What are the Principles of Osteopathy? The guiding principles of osteopathy are based on the philosophies of founder Dr Andrew Taylor Still but have been refined and expanded in the century and a half since Osteopathy was established. The way an Osteopath approaches the treatment and management of every patient are guided by these four principles:... 1. The person is a single, unified unit comprised of body, mind and spirit. Osteopaths recognise that one element of the person effects the others and indeed, one part of the body effects the rest of the body. 2. The body is capable of self-regulation, self-maintenance and self-healing. With that in mind, it is the role of the Osteopath to identify and help you resolve any factors that may hinder these natural processes. Factors often include things like restricted and repetitive movement, on-going stress, poor nutrition or inadequate sleep. 3. The structure and function of the body are inter-related. The structure of the body (muscles, joints, nerves etc) and function of those tissues and the person as a whole (movement, breathing, digestion) are inter-related but respond to internal and external influences. 4. Osteopathic treatment is based on the rational application of the other three principles in the assessment, examination and treatment of the individual. 17.01.2022 As we hit the month of November, that means it’s ‘Movember‘ time again! You can expect to notice more and more men sporting (often questionable) facial hair in support of men’s health. Now you might not think much of men’s health as a topic but that’s because it hasn’t traditionally gotten much air time. It would seem that the stereotype of men not talking about their health and feelings, still holds true, even as we approach the close of 2020! But having looked at the facts..., the weight of reality really drove home that we really need to catch up with the times, because men are still dying younger than women. While life expectancy for men in Australia has gone up to 79.1 years, that is still 6 years younger than females. 12.01.2022 Its National Diabetes Week July 12 - July 18 How can I reduce my risk of developing Diabetes? You can reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by reducing the amount of food you eat, reducing the amount of fat and sugar in your diet, including fruit and vegetables in your diet, reducing your alcohol intake and participating in exercise. Exercise can improve your glycaemic control which decreases your risk of developing heart, kidney and eye diseases, improves your life ...expectancy and reduces your risk of developing a disability including blindness and amputation. Everybody benefits from regular exercise. If you have diabetes, or are at risk of diabetes it plays an important role in keeping you healthy. For a person with diabetes exercise helps: - Insulin to work better, which will improve your diabetes management - Maintain a healthy weight - Lower your blood pressure - Reduce your risk of heart disease - Reduce stress It is recommended that you engage in at least 150 mins of physical activity every week or 30 mins 5 days per week to reduce your risk of developing chronic conditions including diabetes. For people who are diagnosed with Type II diabetes it is recommended that they engage in 210 mins of exercise per week. So prevention is better (by 60 mins/week) than the cure! If 30 minutes is not possible, then try dividing the time into 3 x 10 minutes sessions. If you need to lose weight, 45-60 minutes every day. You can break up short amounts of exercise throughout the day. A physically active lifestyle has been associated with a 9% decreased risk of developing Type II diabetes with every 500kcal/week increase in physical activity. Including both aerobic and resistance training is most effective at improving your glycaemic control than only engaging in one type of training. You do not need to huff and puff to gain the benefits of exercise. Aim for moderate intensity. This means you should still be able to talk as you exercise without becoming breathless. If you have any diabetes complications such as retinopathy, nephropathy, you should talk to your doctor before you start increasing the intensity of your exercise. #MelbourneOsteopathy #osteopathy #feelgoodagain

10.01.2022 Improving hip function The hips have a big job, they have to move about a lot and carry the entire trunk while they do it so they’re one of those areas of the body that often get sore. And at times it can be difficult to work out why Is it because you sit too long, or is it because you stand too long? Is it because you have started doing a new exercise, or is it because you don’t exercise? Is it because you are walking the wrong way or wearing the wrong shoes? These factors... might contribute to your hip pain but these are not really the questions that need answering. The most important question is; Why are your hips unable to meet your daily demands on them? Your hips need to be flexible enough to allow for full range of movement, and they need to be strong enough to control your body weight and momentum. This applies to strenuous activities like running, jumping and squatting but also to basic daily activities like walking about and getting in and out of chairs. At MOH we commonly see hip pain in active people who play sports like football, tennis, and netball who require intense loading and sudden recoil through the hips like rapidly changing direction or leaping up to catch a ball. It is also common for us to see these same people struggle to perform very simple, low load functional tasks like balancing on one leg or squatting without losing control of their hip joint. Improving strength and control in these basic movements can greatly improve your symptoms and limit future injury or aggravation. It is also important to recognise that your hip function is influenced by your low back, knee and foot function. Poor coordination between your lumbar spine, hips and legs can put you at risk of pain or injury to the hip. That’s why we always perform a comprehensive functional assessment of how these areas work together; this is a critical step in putting together a treatment and rehabilitation plan for any hip injury. The video below demonstrates simple ways to improve mobility in the hip https://youtu.be/kY9diV5zcBU #feelgoodagain #MelbourneOsteopathy

10.01.2022 Its National Diabetes Week July 12 - July 18 What is Diabetes? The food that you eat breaks down into glucose (a form of sugar), fat and protein and all are essential to your bodys needs. Your body produces insulin which is essential in moving glucose from your bloodstream into your cells where it is used as energy. Diabetes is a condition that is caused when your body no longer produces enough insulin, or any at all. This results in high levels of glucose remaining in the ...bloodstream and often not enough in the cells, which can cause many complications for your body. Are you at risk? The risk of developing diabetes increases with the following factors: - as you age - if you have family members who have developed diabetes, - if you have previously had high blood sugar levels, - if you do not include fruit and vegetables into your diet everyday, - if you do not engage in 2.5 hours of physical activity every week, - if you smoke, - if you take medication for high blood pressure and - if you are overweight. 09.01.2022 Headache and Migraine Awareness Week Maybe youve seen flashes of light cross your field of vision and youve known a migraine was on its way. Or youve had to lie down in a dark room, waiting for a blinding headache to ease up sounds like youre one of Australias 4.9 million migraineurs! Migraine headaches usually feel like pulsing or throbbing pain on one side of the head. They can also cause nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. And they can be much more... severe than other headaches. But, migraines arent all alike. Yours might be very different from someone elses. Headaches and migraines are a very common reason why patients attend our clinic and our Osteopaths use a holistic approach to treatment and management. We commonly see people who suffer from migraines triggered by muscle tension, strain or stiffness in the upper back and neck but we often also help people understand what their other triggers might be and help them identify when other treatments might be beneficial. Liaising with your GP or neurologist is often part of the process. This is key in creating comprehensive care plans that decrease the number of headache days, headache intensity and improve quality of life overall for migraineurs. headache-and-migraine-awareness-week-2020 #HMAW2020 #headacheaustralia #melbourneosteopathy #feelgoodagain

08.01.2022 Why Osteopathy? Osteopathy was established in the late 1800’s as an alternative to the archaic and dangerous medical practices of that period. It was designed to offer a safer approach to the healing of somatic, internal and systemic ailments through manipulation of the physical body. This idea still serves as an underlying philosophy of the practice. In conjunction with an ever-growing body of scientific evidence we have seen a modernisation of osteopathy to what it is now ... an evidence-based, holistic approach to healthcare. Osteopaths are government registered healthcare practitioners who undertake 5 years of university training in the fields of Science and Health Science. Osteopathy is a form of Allied Healthcare which recognises the relationship between our human form, how it functions, and how these factors influence our general health. Your Osteopath will look at the links between the structure and function or your musculoskeletal system and how this impacts the health of other systems, such as your cardiovascular, respiratory and nervous systems. They will assess your biomechanics and observe any postural imbalances and movement impairments that may be responsible for your symptoms. Osteopaths incorporate a broad range of manual techniques including: - Soft tissue massage, stretching and muscle energy techniques to improve the resting tone and flexibility of the connective tissues - Gentle joint mobilisation and spinal manipulation to help restore the sliding and gliding movements necessary for optimal joint kinematics, or joint function. At MOH we also offer classes in Functional Movement and Clinical Pilates to complement the traditional Osteopathic approach. After years of clinical observation that the benefits of traditional osteopathic medicine are amplified by a structured rehabilitation and exercise program, the MOH model was developed to offer you a comprehensive health service under one roof. Our goal at MOH is to help you achieve the optimal strength, flexibility and movement patterns that will help you to do the things you love, and to achieve your goals. 07.01.2022 Iliotibial Band Syndrome The Iliotibial band is a thick tendon that runs along the outside of your thigh from the hip down to the top of your shin. Its main function is to help slow movement and absorb impact. Iliotibial band syndrome is a common cause of knee pain, especially among runners. Repetitive trauma from running can cause inflammation of the iliotibial band and even knee pain. Eventually this condition will result in degeneration of the tendon and progress to a con...dition called tendinosis. This means there will be excessive tightness due to abnormal scar formation and may become a source of chronic knee pain. A thorough subjective and objective examination from an Osteopath is usually sufficient to diagnose Iliotibial band syndrome, investigations such as an ultrasound or MRI may be used to assist with diagnosis. Most cases of Iliotibial band syndrome settle well with appropriate Osteopathic care. This requires careful assessment by the Osteopath to determine which factors have contributed to the development of the condition, with subsequent correction of these factors.Your Osteopath can advise which exercises are most appropriate for the patient and when they should be commenced. The success rate of treatment is largely dictated by patient compliance. If you have knee pain, dont delay, book an appointment with one of our caring and qualified Osteopaths today. https://www.melbourneosteohealth.com/book-online/ #feelgoodagain #melbourneosteopathy

07.01.2022 Functional Shoulder Assessment When we assess patients with pain and injury we really need to look at how things work as a whole. Taking an Osteopathic approach to the assessment of shoulder pain means well look at the movement and function of the scapular (shoulder blade), the thoracic spine (rib cage) and the shoulder joint itself. Well also look more broadly at how the neck, lower back and hips move and work in relation to these areas.... We do this to identify any factors that might disadvantage the shoulder structures (part of the why your shoulder hurts in the first place) but more importantly we do this to identify useful strategies for offloading sensitive shoulder structures (the much more important, how to make it hurt less)... 06.01.2022 CHECK-IN WITH US Why would I come for Maintenance Treatment? Osteopaths can identify and deal with problems or constraints in the body before they cause symptoms. Many individuals opt to have a regular maintenance treatment to prevent issues escalating into more serious trouble.... Stress factors to the body from changed work or exercise routines can lead to illness & health problems which may manifest as pain, tension or general discomfort. Through preventative & maintenance osteopathic therapies the risk of musculoskeletal & other general health issues going undiscovered is significantly minimised. Everyone is different and your present clinical state, activity levels, diet and occupation are just some of the elements that govern your health and whether treatment is appropriate for you or not. A number of our clients benefit from receiving osteopathic treatment on a maintenance basis. They present to our clinic every few weeks and some may come only every few months. However from experience we recognise that our clients who are aware of their wellness and maintain their health are the ones who benefit the most and need less treatment overall. 06.01.2022 Osteopathy for Neck Pain https://youtu.be/PXd-sCQw1Gc In this video, Mel demonstrates a few ways in which osteopathy can aid in alleviating neck pain and restoring movement.... The first treatment technique is simple articulation of the atlanto-occipital joint which is where the base of the skull meets the uppermost cervical vertebra. This technique aims to improve movement within the joint. The second technique you’re seeing uses active resistance of muscle contractions to help reduce muscle tension in the area and allow the joints to move more freely. If you’re suffering with neck pain, why not come in and see one of our osteopaths at Melbourne Osteohealth. We are highly experienced in helping patients recover well from these types of injuries and we’d love to help you feel good again! #feelgoodagain #melbourneosteohealth #MelbourneOsteopathy

06.01.2022 Building shoulder strength Shoulders are difficult They are the highly mobile & agile connection between the arms and trunk, with the scapula (shoulder blade) connecting the two. This arrangement allows you to push, pull, reach and twist in an array of functional movements, making your upper limbs incredibly versatile. There is a drawback to all this mobility and agility. The connection from arm to trunk crosses several joints that are very mobile but inherently unstable. T...he joint between arm and scapula is described as a ball-and-socket joint but its actually very shallow, more like a golf ball sitting on a tee. Shoulder stability, and therefore function, relies heavily on muscle strength and coordination. This is an intricate and complex arrangement of pulleys and anchors from trunk, to scapula, to arm. To complicate matters, movement of the arm and scapula is coupled, not sequential. Put simply this means everything is moving at once and nothing acts as a fixed anchor point so everything needs to be both stable and mobile at the same time. The task of simultaneously stabilising multiple joints while allowing enough give for the desired movement, takes immense control. And all this depends almost entirely on muscle strength and control Did I mention shoulders were difficult?? Fortunately strength training in this region follows a very simple rule. Strengthen the stabilisers, strengthen the movers, and then bring it altogether. The link below shows you a simple progression to apply this rule. #feelgoodagain #melbourneosteopathy https://www.melbourneosteohealth.com/shoulder-strength/

02.01.2022 Pelvic Floor muscles... what exactly are they? Put simply, the muscles that make up the pelvic floor are those muscles that attach to the underside of your bony pelvis. If you imagine the space between your tailbone, your sit bones and the bony part at the front of your pelvis (just above your genitals) your have the space that is occupied by your pelvic floor muscles it is literally the floor of pelvis. These muscles have many functions, it’s their job to:... - prevent organs in the abdomen from protruding outside the pelvis; - assist with bowel and bladder control by resisting the urgency you feel when need to go to the bathroom; and - help the bones of the pelvis stay congruous and therefore stable when your legs or back move or are loaded up (with heavy shopping, for example, or moving a couch or gardening etc.) These functions also give you an indication of the sort of signs and symptoms to watch out for such as urinary stress incontinence, pelvic prolapse or pelvic pain. Pelvic floor dysfunction can lead to difficulty with a whole range of daily activities but simple strategies can often provide relief.
