02.01.2022 The temporomandibular joint or the TMJ is the name given to the jaw. Located just in front of your ear, every time you talk, chew, yawn or sing this joint moves. The jaw can be a source of both acute and chronic pain, which over time can significantly affect eating, sleeping and even cause headaches and neck pain. A common cause of jaw pain is tightness and imbalance in the muscles and fascia of the jaw, tightness in these muscles can cause referral pain throughout the face,... teeth and temples. Clicking of the jaw can be a sign of problems within the joint itself and if left untreated can cause significant problems with moving the jaw. Myotherapy can help successfully treat jaw pain and dysfunction. The muscles and fascia surrounding the jaw may be treated with massage, myofascial release techniques, joint mobilisation and dry needling therapy. Your myotherapist can also prescribe exercises and stretches to help manage your symptoms and correct underlying imbalances. #myotherapy #temporomandibularjoint #tmjpain #tmjdisorder #brunswickmyotherapy Read more about jaw pain in my latest blog here https://melbourneperformancetherapy.com/b/sore-clicking-jaw

02.01.2022 Why Performers? This is a question that I regularly get asked by friends, colleagues and clients, so I thought I would take this opportunity to share with you a little about my journey on how I came to specialise in working with performing artists. Growing up I was always interested in music and dance, and began lessons in both aged 9. This developed over the years and saw me sing, dance and play my way through various school concerts, products and music competitions. O...ver time, my passion for music took center stage and I played the flute throughout my teen years and into university. Along the way I developed a love of all things performing, the excitement backstage, the costumes, the lights and watching the other performers. As my education continued and I began university I was also drawn to the health industry, first in psychology and then to health science. Once I started my studies in musculo-skeletal therapy I knew that I had found how I would combine my love of the arts with my drive and passion for healthcare. This was considered a bit 'radical' at the time - the majority of my classmates wanted to get involved in sporting clubs and elite level sport - but I knew that this was not the path for me. I had an understanding and passion for what it meant to be a performer and the demands it places on your body so I knew this was where my niche lay. Over the years performance medicine industry has grown and there is greater recognition of the importance for performers to care for their bodies in the same way sports people do. But still, the industry is small and it can be rare to find a manual therapist that specialises in performers (compared to sports) - but that's why I love it! I love working with performers to help them find ease and strength in their movement, conquer poses and movements that are challenging, and most of all helping them to be pain free in their movement. No performer should have to suffer for their art! So if you are a performer that is looking for a Myotherapist that understands what it is to be a performer and demands that it places on you and your body - get in touch! I can help you find your best performance! #myotherapy #brunswickmyotherapy #performingartists #performingartshealthcare #healthcare

02.01.2022 Let's talk about shoulder pain The type of shoulder pain that makes it difficult or painful to do things with your arm overhead You have probably heard of your rotator cuff, but what does the rotator cuff actually do? And how can it help with shoulder pain? The rotator cuff is a group of 4 small muscles that work to stabilise the shoulder joint, keeping it in an ideal position and also works to rotate your arm as you move it around. They may be relatively smal...l, but they are mighty! Sometimes because of the nature of how we use our shoulders, poor posture and even stress we can get an imbalance between these four muscles, with some muscles shortening and tightening, while others lengthen and become less active. This altered length-tension relationship can play havoc with your ability to stabilise your shoulder joint and can lead to changes in many of the surrounding muscles of the shoulder. Over time this can lead to pain with lifting the arm overhead and sometimes even trouble lying on the shoulder in bed. If this is you then it's a great idea to book an appointment with your therapist for some treatment to help restore balance to the muscles of the shoulder and improve the movement at the shoulder complex overall. Your therapist may also prescribe an exercise like this one: Chest up, thumbs out. Chest up, thumbs out exercise: This exercise is a great starting point for sore shoulders with an imbalance in their rotator cuff muscles. Start standing with one end of the theraband in each hand, palms facing up so your thumbs face out. Bring your elbows to the front of your ribcage and lock them into the body (think front side edges). Pull the hands away from each other creating tension on the band, this creates a rotation at the shoulder joint and helps to strengthen the external rotators of the shoulder. This exercise can later be progressed to include different positions of the shoulder and different forces. If you have any questions about pain you are experiencing in your shoulder pop them in the comments below or PM me.
