We will have pine mushrooms and small amounts of slippery jacks available this weekend. ... The mushrooms have been a bit tough this week so if you would like large quantities this is not the week for it however we will have plenty of our popular premade trays available. As always, please try to get down during the first half of the market to make sure you don’t miss out!

This week we have seen a dramatic reduction of young mushrooms popping up and the forests are starting to look more and more bare as the soil gets colder. ... We really are not sure how much longer the season will go on and we will operate on a week by week basis from now on.

We are back this weekend at Coburg Farmers Market and Elwood Farmers Market on Saturday and Mulgrave Farmers Market on Sunday (DUE TO EASTER THERE IS NO MARKET AT ALPHINGTON THIS SUNDAY) We have some beautiful pine mushrooms again this week (unfortunately no Slippery Jack) and the Easter Bunny has brought us a very special treat this week.... Beautiful Brown Birch Boletes, we only have a limited amount of these available so if you would like some I suggest coming to the market nice and early on Saturday as they will be snapped up very quickly.

This week almost all the mushrooms are very small and are in super condition, a perfect combination if you want to pickle some for later in the year. ... Never pickled Pine Mushrooms before? Well, did you know these are a rare delicacy in Europe and have been pickled and preserved for centuries so there are dozens of recipes online. The most popular way is a Polish or Russian vinegar based pickling solution but they can also be pickled the Italian way in oil. A google search under saffron milk caps, rizhiki (Russian Name) or ridze (Polish Name) will yield many excellent recipes. Due to the mushrooms all being very small and sought after (and incredibly hard work to pick due to their size) unfortunately there will be no bulk budget trays available just for this week.
