21.01.2022 This weeks People of Melbourne Relay For Life profile comes from Catherine of Team WEHI! I work as a Division Coordinator in the Blood Cells and Blood Cancer Division at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI). I’m not a scientist myself, but I manage most of the administrative and regulatory stuff for our Division. It’s great, because I get to work with an amazing group of scientists really smart and focused on their research, but also absolutely lovely people. I’ve bee...Continue reading
11.01.2022 This week in our People of Melbourne Relay For Life stories we are hearing from Maya, who was the Team Captain of the Mentone Grammar team in 2019. Hello, my name is Maya I am 14 and currently in year 9. In year 6, I participated in Relay For Life with my school at the local athletics track, it was an amazing experience, coming together with our community, fundraising and taking part. Knowing I had made even a small impact to help raise funds and support those going through c...ancer was amazing. Last year, together with a group of friends from my school, we took part in the Melbourne Relay For Life to help raise money and spread awareness. For me the relay was about coming together as a community to give back, honour those who have passed and support those who are still fighting. I relay for everyone affected by cancer. I relay in the hopes that together our fundraising and awareness can help provide cures and treatments for the families and friends with cancer and those impacted. I love the team spirit of Relay For Life, everyone is so friendly and welcoming. I really loved the silent disco it's super fun and keeps you motivated and awake. My favourite way to fundraise would probably be having a bake sale. It is always to fun and everyone can help out. 11.01.2022 Due to COVID-19, the Melbourne Relay For Life was sadly cancelled last year, and after consultation with the Committee, we have made the difficult decision to now close the Melbourne Relay. We want to thank everyone who took part in the Relay in previous years. We really value your generosity and recognise the hard work that goes into being part of Relay. We also want to assure you that Cancer Council will still be present in your area, continuing to deliver cancer informati...on and support services to people impacted by cancer. We would love for you to continue to join us on the track at the nearby Hawthorn, Maroondah or Wyndham event! If you’ve already registered for this year’s Melbourne Relay, just let us know which other event you would like to join, and we can carry your registration & fundraising over to your new event. If you would like to take part in another Relay, please visit relayforlife.org.au to find one near to you. Or, visit http://www.cancervic.org.au/how-you-can-help/fundraise for other ways to get involved. Thank you again. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact Cancer Council’s Supporter Care team on 1300 65 65 85 or [email protected].
10.01.2022 This weeks People of Melbourne Relay For Life post comes from Vanessa of team 'Nobody Gaming'. Hi, my name is Vanessa and I am team captain for my team Nobody Gaming and we walked in the 2019 Relay for Life. We relay for my partner who passed away in July 2019. We walk to remember him, to honour him, to keep his memory alive. We also walk for everyone else who has passed away from cancer, for all those currently fighting this disease and to raise much needed funds for cancer ...research and to bring awareness to this horrible disease. I wouldn’t say there is a favourite memory as the weekend brings so many emotions. The memories and moments are cemented in such grief for me and the team. The memory or moment that will stay with me the most is leading the walk around the track just after the candle ceremony. That was an experience. We didn’t really fundraise per say, we just put up call outs. But can’t go past a bake sale or raffle. If you would like to share why you Relay, please complete the short survey found here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ZTY8H3N
06.01.2022 Hi Melbourne Relayers! You might remember an earlier post from us about the wonderful Team WEHI and their fearless leader Catherine. I wanted to share an update from them. In November the team embarked on a fundraising challenge, with their team walking through the night, and spelling out words of hope. ... Through their incredible efforts, they raised over $2000 for the Cancer Council Victoria, and spread the message that we will continue the fight, no matter what this year throws our way. You can read more about their incredible and inspiring efforts here: https://teamwehirelayforlife.wordpress.com//team-wehi-rel/
06.01.2022 Hi Melbourne Relay for Lifers! Team WEHI have some exciting updates about their fundraising activities below; After writing about our experiences in the Relay last year, Team WEHI got a bit nostalgic! We miss being together as a team, of course, but we also miss the opportunity to connect with the community, and to share our love of science.... So we decided to do our own, COVID-safe relay fundraiser. We will be walking between 11am on November 7 and 11am on November 8, and also doing some challenges, just to keep things interesting! We will join forces with a buddy and use the Strava app to ‘walk a message’ in our local areas using our route to spell out words like ‘Relay’ or ‘Hope’ (or even ‘Science’, if anyone lives somewhere with lots of curvy roads!). We will do some science either in the lab, or at home with our families in the kitchen. And we might even do a cheeky walk around the block late at night in our lab coats (or even in a dragon onesie), just as a reminder that cancer never sleeps, and nor do we. We’d love it if you would join us on our journey! You can follow us on Facebook, or visit our blog, https://teamwehirelayforlife.wordpress.com/, where we are profiling scientists, sharing our favourite messy science experiments, and answering your questions about science, cancer and medical research. Or you could team up with a buddy and join us in spirit walk a message, or do some messy science, or go for a walk at night in your team costume and share your photos with us. Maybe even start signing up your team for next year’s event early bird rates still apply, after all, and it’s never too soon to start fundraising! (Or if it’s way too soon to think about that look, we are up and running on the Melbourne Relay for Life website, and we aren’t too proud to ask for sponsorship!) We hope to ‘see’ some of you online in the coming weeks. It’s been a messy, hard, disheartening year for all of us but we are committed to finding ways to keep us together, and to keep the work going. And hopefully, we can be together in person next year!
03.01.2022 Share your cancer care telehealth experiences with us. We would like to talk to people about their experiences with telehealth appointments for cancer care. Cancer Council is working with health services across Victoria and Deakin University researchers to understand what cancer patients and their carers think of telehealth. This research aims to explore what patients and carers think is good about telehealth, what isn’t working and how telehealth services can be improved. P...articipating in this research provides you with a valuable opportunity to help improve the telehealth experience for all Victorians affected by cancer. To find out more and register for an interview slot, visit cancervic.org.au/a/stories/telehealth-research-project.html If you have any questions about this research please contact Vicki White, lead researcher at Deakin University [email protected] or call 03 924 68522. Thank you for your interest and support to help improve cancer outcomes for all Victorians.
02.01.2022 To help us understand how the pandemic and physical distancing measures have impacted people affected by cancer, Cancer Council researchers are conducting an Australia-wide survey and we want to hear about your experience via this survey
