23.01.2022 Spring - from Robert Martin We are Nature, as much as any rock, or river, or animal, or tree in the forest. In this Spring that is pouring forth from the creativity of the world, we are caught in the tide of growth, and opening, and transformation, just as surely as every other part of the natural world. Our normal work-a-day mind imagines that we will just go on as always: same thought patterns, same habitual behaviours, same feeling modes, same possibilities.... However our fundamental Nature-being is inspired to grow, to transform, and to flower and fruit, and to nest-build and spread its wings; but of course, in the way that is appropriate to human Nature. The Spring sunlight beckons us out to bathe in glory. The music of Spring is carried, thankfully, by our beautiful community of birds. They cajole us to sing with their song; we are encouraged to find our inward song, our own wonderful voice in the wind. The Spring storms blow through us in their striving to sweep away the old, and to create space for the new; the new water course, the new tree, the new creature. Also, if we will notice, the new human thoughts, and feelings, and impulses, that arise within our natural soul. Once again, we can say to ourselves, I am dipped in God and new-created! Thanks be given for our beautiful Spring, our season of transformation, and may we allow our natural growth into the promise of future life. 19.01.2022 Our doors are open... Dear families and friends of MRSS, welcome back to the school year of 2020! It has been so lovely to see everyone again and to meet new families starting this year.

19.01.2022 Pursuit of Truth - Robert Martin For friendship, for loved ones, for teachers and their pupils, for all normal relationships, speaking the truth is an essential element. But we are aware that our grasp on truth is always partial; it is in a state of development towards understanding a greater truth. If we want truth, then we must forever be alert to more facts, or examples, or principles that we have not, until now, considered. In our present situation we are provoked by the... discomforts we suffer to try to understand the radically changed conditions of our lives. Why are we going through this? Is there a better way to handle our situation (which is surely a question we ask about everything)? Are we right to behave in this way? When will everything return to normal? Why are other people behaving differently to myself? As always, it is through talking together, and striving to step beyond our own limited opinion, that we can come closer to understanding the reality in which we live. Thereby, we gain a better chance to steer our life towards our truest humanity. We are all students of life. Life teaches us about our own nature, about our human strengths and limitations. Most essentially, our companions are our source of learning, through example or text or conversation. It therefore behoves us to gain understanding of the many and varied view-points of our companions. This will allow us to build ever stronger community of soul and spirit, when we might otherwise be driven apart by lack of enthusiasm for the experience and understanding of others. 16.01.2022 MRSS Outdoor Ed This glorious little cove sits inside Bittangabee Bay, which we visit with a combined group of Class 10s and 11s in the first week of December each year on the Skindiving trip. Every morning, we awake and wander down to this little cove for a luxurious, if sometimes bracing, morning swim to begin our day. It is a sheltered spot that faces the rising sun, with waves that lap gently at the shore, and a beautifully clear sandy bottom that gradually deepens. It is pretty close to perfect! We are so looking forward to returning to the bush with the children soon. Grace, for the Outdoor Ed Dept

15.01.2022 Autumn Colours working remotely from home with Year Eleven Biology Class. In one of last weeks VCE Biology classes a student was amused. She was participating at home, and she could see her mother, a Steiner School teacher, giving an online lesson with much younger children, but on the same topic of study as our class eleven: the fabulously coloured leaves of Autumn. The class teachers approach, I imagine, was designed to engender a deep awareness of the beauty and rhyth...ms of the natural world in the young people in her visual classroom. In our class eleven, by contrast, we were considering the role of antioxidant pigments in the preservation of chlorophyll in the bright light of Autumn, and the theory of the co-evolution of plant pigments (carotenoids and flavonoids) and the insects that predate the plants. Like the younger children, we luxuriated in drawing the coloured leaves, and recognised the unfathomable wisdom and beauty of the trees growth, but now, in this recapitulation of appreciation of Autumn, we added that more intellectual and analytic understanding that hopefully increases our intelligent immersion in, and love of, the wisdom of Nature. Such is the process of becoming wiser and living ever more fully. Robert Martin, Biology Teacher. See more

13.01.2022 Class Three News...Like the rest of us, Class Three have had to make a big adjustment to being at home instead of school. We have begun the term with a Music Main Lesson exploring notation, timing and mood based around new songs or songs we already know well. Our recorder playing and written work has been interspersed with craft and lots of time outdoors. We still begin each day with our morning verse: The sun with loving light Makes bright for me each day The soul with spir...it power Gives strength unto my limbs In sunlight shining clear I reverence o god The strength of human kind Which thou so graciously has planted in my soul That I with all my might Might love to work and learn From thee comes light and strength To thee rise love and thanks Ken, Class Three Teacher

12.01.2022 From our friends at the Melbourne Rudolf Steiner Seminar.. "It is a blessing if in later years one can look back with deep satisfaction at having been taught by an admired teacher. Such an education is of value for the whole of one’s life. [Rudolf Steiner] Many of us will have a memory of a special teacher who impacted on us in our early years of education. 10.01.2022 Thank you to everyone for their time, care and commitment that was given so generously to make this years Fair and Open Day such a joyful celebration to our wonderful school, community and visitors from near and far. The day itself was delightful; the Maypole, with its celebration of Spring, was carried so skilfully in the hands of our Class 2 and 3 students, the beautiful displays of school work in all its diverse and creative forms, delicious food, fine music, fun and creative activities, great shopping and the exciting entertainment of the flying trapeze! We hope you enjoyed your day at this years Open Day and Fair. If you missed it, our Open Day and Fair will be held again on Saturday, 21st November 2020.

10.01.2022 Dear School Community, Welcome back to a most unusual term.If anyone had told us a year ago this is what wed be doing this term, and that our classes would be running remotely and online, we just wouldnt have believed them. Our hearts and minds go out to all our families at this time, who are working so hard to keep their children connected to their school work, and to the school community. We hear that there are some lovely moments for parents and children settling to work... at home, and there are also a few frustrations at times! Many parents are juggling schooling support for their children across different class levels whilst also working from home. There are a myriad of challenges, and we greatly appreciate your commitment to your child/rens education and to continue weaving together the fabric of this beautiful cloth that is our school. Teachers are working harder than ever it seems, planning online or offsite curriculum for their classes, and supporting families as much as possible to make this way of learning work. Colleagues are helping each other out with anything from tech support to being a listening ear. Staff have stepped in to help and work in other areas. For instance Connie from the dining room is supervising children who cannot stay at home from Classes 2-5, and the Outdoor Education Teachers have been covering the other classes. These are just a few examples. The Office is open, employing careful social distancing arrangements, thanks to the wonderful Office Staff. The cleaners are working especially hard to keep the school rooms that are in use shiny and clean, and the whole school gets a clean every week even in those rooms that arent used, to hold the space beautifully for when the children return. Meanwhile all around us life goes on. The birds miss the daily ritual of picking up the childrens crumbs but relish in the beauty and tranquility of nature at this time. We know that the natural world holds and nourishes us, and we feel it is especially important to spend time away from our screen lives in the sanctity of the mineral, plant and animal realms. Warm wishes to you all, Ali Staley on behalf of the College of Teachers See more

09.01.2022 ~ Remote Guardianship ~ For our Secondary Class Guardians, working within the confines of the remote learning environment has required a new envisioned creativity using the available resources at hand... Even though they are apart, Class 9 Guardians Matt O. and Karen L. recently shared an hilarious dinner party with their class, full of music, mess, and joy for the alchemy of preparing food together. This is Flynn, preparing the meal to be shared with his family, alongside 2...1 other families in their respective homes! Step 1: Start with an inspired idea and a lets give it a go attitude. Step 2: Add to that 22 Class 9 students and a menu of garlic bread, pizza and chocolate self-saucing pudding. Step 3: Dial in for a 3 hour zoom session with Master Chef Matteo and his daughters as his side-kick backup singers. And this is what you get ... 09.01.2022 Class Eleven Oil Painting with Sarah Baker, VCE Art The continuation of the YR 11 oil painting main lesson was a study in primary colours. Each student mixed up a palette of five tones of red, blue and yellow in which to depict their still life set up. 09.01.2022 Dear School Community, I am finding that navigating this time of change to be incredibly challenging. When I reflect on the last 6 months I am aware that I have experienced huge changes in my life. I feel incredibly humbled and proud to work with so many inspiring people, and I realise that it is my deep connection to this school, my colleagues and you, our wonderful school community, that brings hope. It is this deep connection that we must now focus on, a connection built o...n love, understanding and respect. We are all living our lives in a different manner to the way we were a few months ago. Like myself, many of you will be feeling the pain of not being with your loved ones. I am so fortunate that both of my grown up daughters, their partners and their dogs moved back in with us at the start of the year; a full house indeed. However, I had hoped that I could spend most of my weekends and term breaks in the Wimmera this year with my father. My dear mother passed away, after a short illness, three weeks before Christmas. Over the course of mums illness and the Christmas break my connection with my old hometown community grew stronger and I was so very thankful. I felt so fortunate that I was able to experience the love and support from the townsfolk of Rupanyup. It reminded me of how I feel as part of the community at MRSS. At our College meeting last week I was reminded of the wonderful connection we all share; staff, parents and students. As I listened to staff speak not only of their love for the school, but also for the wider school community I felt strengthened.Whilst at times our communication to our loved community may not seem to express our love and gratitude, we want you to know that in these times of change we hope you feel this deep connection. We are always with you. The measures put in place over the last month or so have occasionally engendered feelings of disconnection, it means we all have to work a little harder to keep those connections in place. It is these feelings of disconnection that my dear father is feeling. He is navigating the biggest change, the loss of his one true love. We try to connect with technology but it is a poor substitute for human contact. I am looking forward to these human connections returning, with school resuming and my visits back to the Wimmera. Remote learning has been a new and challenging experience for all teachers and I am so very thankful to our wonderful families who have worked so hard to ensure their children were held with love. Warm Regards, Jo Stirrat, Class 8 Teacher and College Chair Photo: Saying our morning verse with class 8 Upper on google classroom See more

A shared moment of enrichment and possibility, of opening up to our vulnerabilities, and remembering our strengths. 06.01.2022 From our friends at the Melbourne Rudolf Steiner Seminar: We are so thrilled to be hosting Andrew Hill as our special guest speaker offering a Saturday afternoon talk, live streaming on Zoom 26th Sept 4PM, free and open to everyone! Andrew Hill is Principal of Glenaeon Rudolf Steiner School and will speak on the topic of: "Finding the why of our lives: seven reasons why a meaningful education suits a post-COVID world. Andrew has spoken widely on how Rudolf Steiner Education... helps foster a sense of meaning and purpose in life. It is a key message communicated by Glenaeon to its community. Rudolf Steiner said a hundred years ago that "Our highest endeavour is to develop young men and women who out of themselves are able to impart meaning and direction to their own lives. This message resonates deeply with us today. The current challenges of our times have shone a spotlight on the great need for young people today to be able to find direction, meaning and purpose in life out of themselves. Andrew will speak on how this vital inner capacity is developed through the school years. We look forward to sharing this with you! To register for this Saturday afternoon ZOOM talk, visit the link in bio or via our website news and events page, and the details to join will be emailed to you. www.steinerseminar.com Information: Melbourne Rudolf Steiner Seminar 03 9876 5199 or Tiffany on 0413 120 345

06.01.2022 Equine Studies from Class 11 Student Jessica D. Our wonderful school offers a range of alternative VETIS subjects that can be undertaken as part of the VCE studies. For the past two years I have been studying the Certificate II in Equine Studies at Box Hill Institute in Lilydale, which will also contribute to my VCE score. I began this course in Class 10 where we studied the behaviour of horses, safe handling procedures, different types of gear and when it should be used..., horse care relating to grooming, rugging, clipping, training, as well as different types of competitions, preparation and rules that apply, horse health, transport, working in the industry, career pathways, and the basics of anatomy. As part of the course we also participated in several practical riding days, work placement within the industry, competition workshops and other practical assessments. This year, alongside my other Year 11 subjects, I have been completing the other half of my Equine Studies course. We have studied four units, anatomy and the common diseases that can affect the horse, health and welfare, conformation, and nutrition. These are very science-based units and give a strong grounding in more advanced levels of equine knowledge, which can assist in finding jobs within the industry or provide a solid base for further study at a tertiary level. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, the course has been significantly impacted, but the team at Box Hill Institute have been working hard to ensure we still have the opportunity to complete all the SAC’s and practical elements of the units. I highly recommend this course to anyone in the school community who is passionate about horses and would like to further their knowledge or go on to a career in the industry. Due to the nature of this course, students must be academically driven and self-motivated to complete the work on top of their other subjects. This course, however, is extremely rewarding and provides a great outlet to enjoy a subject you are passionate about amongst the stress of VCE. #MelbourneRudolfSteinerSchool #MRSS #SteinerEducation #SteinerEducationAustralia #RudolfSteiner #WaldorfEducation #VCE #EquineStudies

02.01.2022 MRSS Outdoor Ed All of the beautiful places that we go over the years live in the hearts and minds of the students who have visited those special places, and are excitedly anticipated by the children yet to visit them. Whilst we cannot physically journey very far at the moment, we can all let our minds wander to faraway places, either to revisit with great fondness a place that we hold dear, or to build a picture of a place we are yet to visit. We thought that we would share ...a glimpse now and again of some of the places that we care deeply for, and we hope that the pictures inspire a thought, begin a conversation, or simply fill you with joy. This is the stillness of an emerging dawn reflected in the mighty Murray River from a canoe journey in 2019 with Class 10. The bush was still silent, with only the occasional snippet of birdsong heralding the morning, as our boats glided silently through the water and drips from our paddles quietly rippled the glassy surface. Grace, for the Outdoor Ed Dept

02.01.2022 MRSS Outdoor Ed... Nungatta lives in the hearts of all who have been there. For more than thirty years our class 9s have been going to Nungatta in the wintertime. We spend more than two weeks living as a community on this remote pastoral property immersed in ecology social, deep and natural ecology. Our class 9s learn about ideals of community, sustainability and relationships with place. It is a truly transformative place that the children yearn to experience, and the st...aff always look forward to sharing with each class. In early January this year Nungatta was burnt by the East Coast bushfires and all of the 1000 acres was burnt. We also lost some of the buildings and would have lost all of them if not for the extraordinary courage and work of Pete Sands who lives there and his son-in-law Nic. Having spent over a month at Nungatta every year for nearly thirty years, I was deeply affected by the fires and by concern for my dear friend Pete. It was April before I was able to get to Nungatta to see Pete and the place I love so much. I was, at the same time, both saddened and elated by returning. The loss of the buildings and the severity of the fire in some areas was confronting, but seeing Pete and also the majority of the bush that had had a really healthy burn was joyous. Our school had done an enormous amount to prepare for the possibility of fire and all that we had done allowed Pete to remain safe and to protect the remainder of the infrastructure. Like most stories, Nungattas story through the fires was complex and conflicting. Following the fires, I launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise some money for the rebuilding and the generosity of our community was wonderful. We raised over $8000 to contribute to the building of new sheds and other buildings and the planning for this work is well underway. Thank you! Im delighted that we are now able to plan for this years class 9s to go to Nungatta next term and begin the rebuilding. It is a great honour to be able to contribute our work to this incredible place and to weave our stories and Nungattas together. Were planning on completing most of the rebuilding during the camps using the materials weve been able to purchase with the generosity of our community. This represents a connection and a possibility of which we should all be proud. Art, for the Outdoor Ed Staff See more

01.01.2022 Outdoor Education at MRSS Sunset at Raak Plain, and to our backs, the risen moon.... Raak Plain is a place of vast expanses, that stretch out beyond our sight, blanketed by the immense arc of the sky. When we wander out across the plain, the salt-laden sand crunching under our bare feet, Raak Plain invites us to contemplate at once its enormity, and the minutiae of the more-than-human lives lived there. As part of our outdoor program, our visit to Raak Plain each year with the Class 9 students is one of six trips in their year, totalling 40 nights in the bush. #MelbourneRudolfSteinerSchool #MRSS #SteinerEducation #SteinerEducationAustralia #RudolfSteiner #WaldorfEducation #OutdoorEducation
