BlueChilli founder Sebasian Eckersley-Maslin says "Many of our corporate partners in Australia have increasingly been asking for later-stage start-up programs, so we’re scaling back our technology arm and pivoting our focus from building early-stage startups to working with scale-ups in Australia,"... Don't get me wrong here, I love to hear of tremendous scale-up successes as much as everyone else. Yet I also believe to understand that every single scale-up once started as a start-up. This news sounds to me as if Australia just started to cut the branch it's is sitting on. According to Startup Musters latest report the number of startups in Australia is on the decline anyway. Is this just an aberration or the beginning of an ongoing trend? We might not know the answer to this until a couple of more years passed by. But by then the hole that we did dig for ourselves might already be that deep that it's going to be hard to climb out again.
