23.01.2022 This #TechTalk photo generated so many questions on Instagram that our #WorldSBK press officer (with the help of our engineers) is now the paddocks leading ...expert on fluid dynamics The fuel tanks on the Yamaha R1 WorldSBK race bikes are filled with Explosafe sponge to prevent surging, which is basically fuel rushing to the front of the tank under braking or to the rear of the tank when the rider gets on the gas. Race fuel load is around 15kg so a lot of mass you dont want moving around suddenly and altering the centre of gravity, especially when youre exploring the limits of the front tyre under braking. The sponge slows the flow of fuel around the tank, so the weight transfer is more gradual, allowing the rider more time to compensate for the change.
