22.01.2022 Melbourne Invasion Day march disrupted by lone antagonist. Thousands of people turned out today in a largely peaceful Invasion Day march across Melbourne's CBD. As the rally started to wind down, after hours of speeches and a calm walk through the city, a scuffle erupted near Flinders Street Station. A man wearing an Australian flag as a cape and carrying an Australian flag beach ball antagonised the crowd before he was surrounded by police in chaotic scenes and taken away. A... large police presence could be seen surrounding the area at the busy intersection on Swanston Street. The crowd of thousands started at Parliament House about 10.30am despite the wet weather and COVID-19 restrictions on public gatherings. Organisers of the march were forced to ask the crowd to socially distance, admitting COVID-safe practices were not being followed. On the Facebook event, organisers Warriors of the Aboriginal Resistance (WAR) said they made a COVID-safe plan and participants should follow the instructions of COVID marshals. The official Australia Day parade through Melbourne was cancelled this year due to COVID-19. See more

07.01.2022 Police are on the hunt for a driver who sped erratically down Melbourne's Bourke Street Mall, terrifying pedestrians nearby. Officers attempted to stop a green Mitsubishi Lancer just before 5pm yesterday on Swanston Street, over a traffic related incident. The driver sped north and turned onto Bourke Street Mall where eye witnesses reported seeing bystanders jump for cover as the car flew along the tram tracks and crashed into a bollard. Police approached with their guns draw...n, but a passenger ran from the car towards Elizabeth Street before the driver did a u-turn and took off again. The Police Air Wing was called in and the Mitsubishi was located on Ashworth Street in Albert Park about 6.40pm with its number plates missing. One witness said the scene on Bourke Street Mall was shocking. "Crash - bang, bang! It hit the bollard," the witness said. There were no injuries reported and police don't believe the driver was intentionally trying to target pedestrians.

04.01.2022 UK COVID strain detected in Melbourne hotel quarantine. Victorian authorities are investigating the possible transmission of COVID between residents in hotel quarantine. A government spokesperson said two separate residents on the same floor of the Park Royal in Melbourne returned genome testing results for the same UK variant. The potential transmission period is between January 20 to 28 and involves a family of five and a woman on the same floor within the quarantine hotel.... During that time, a family of five including a man in his 40's, a woman in her 40's and three children aged one, four and seven arrived in Melbourne from Nigeria on January 20 and were placed on same floor as the woman. "The family tested positive on January 24 following their day three swabs and were moved to a health hotel and subsequently tested positive to the coronavirus UK variant," a government statement reads. The woman in her 60's arrived in Melbourne from Malaysia via Singapore on January 11 and previously tested negative for the virus on her day three and 11 tests, but tested positive to the UK variant on January 28. She was moved to a health hotel and her husband has tested negative to his day three and 11 swabs, but will continue to undergo further testing as an additional precaution.
