15.01.2022 INTRODUCING: MELBOURNE TROPICAL FISH CARE GUIDES This week: Axolotl Care Guide What care guides would you like to see? - -... - - - - "Axolotls are a unique species that belong to the salamander family. Although becoming increasingly popular as pets, axolotls are almost extinct in the wild, with the only living population in Lake Xochimilco. Axolotls can live for up to 15 years. Axolotls come in many different colours and forms: Wild-Type: Mottled green with bright eyes purple gills. Albino: White/pale pink with clear/pink eyes and red gills. Melanoid: Black/dark grey with black eyes and dark gills. Leucistic: White/pink with dark eyes and bright red gills. Golden Albino: Golden with pink/orange eyes, bright red/pink gills. Copper: Copper with dark eyes, bright red/pink gills. GFP: Sometimes, a recessive gene called Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) may be present, causing axolotls to glow green under black lighting. Other variations: Other, less common morphs may include Piebald, Golden Non Albino, and Chimaerism. Axolotl Care: -Axolotls should be kept in an aquatic environment. They require the water temperature to be maintained between 14C and 19C. -pH of 7.40-7.60 -Ensure you have a good filter system, but maintain relatively calm water flow, as heavy flow can stress axolotls out. External canister filters fitted with flow-spreading outlets (like a spray bar) will keep your water clean without upsetting its flow. -Substrate is recommended to provide a place for good bacteria to live. Substrate should either be sand, plant substrate, or large river stones. Pebbles should NOT be used as many axolotls will ingest these smaller stones, leading to intestinal blockages and even death -Axolotls are used to the low-lighting conditions found in their native Mexican habitats. -Feed 2-3 times a day. Some food items that we recommend are: Tubifex worms, bloodworms, shrimp, beef heart, insects, feeder fish and balanced pelleted foods.
